How To Install Google Earth In Puppy

#1 Post by KusaNoKaito »

This works in puppy 431 and I believe 500, but doesn't seem to work in 501.

The reason why google earth does not work in Puppy Linux is because JWM is not configured to work with 3D applications or Java.

I'm guessing many of you want this application but don't know how to set it up, well I have figured it out and will attempt to explain.

Google earth requires Java, if you don't have it, get it here.

Before you download google earth you will need to download this .pet.

Unfortunately the latest and greatest version of google earth doesn't seem to work with puppy, BUT an sfs for an older version is available on the lighthouse pup site. link

Note: If you have a full HD install the easiest way to install this would be by using the .sfs installer link (also good for devx)

The freshly installed GoogleEarth with appear in "network"

Worked great! Many thanks!

One note: I had to reboot before it would work. Xorg, I'm guessing...

because JWM is not configured to work with 3D applications or Java
FYI it has nothing to to with JWM.

BTW, has Google Earth always relied on Java? I didn't think it used to. That's a shame really.

I'm not sure, but all the versions I used looked and behaved just like Java apps.

It could be the kernel or puppy version.

O right is there a problem with GoogleEarth in Puppy 4.3.1?

What Puppy version did you install it on then? Lucid puppy?

I suspect you'll find that it is a problem with specific graphics hardware in specific Puppy versions.

Anyone got any ideas how to sort it? I've googled around and can't find anything related to this. I've never had problems with this hardware before with any graphical app, including googleearth.

I really don't know where to start trying to fix this tbh!

ADDITIONAL -

I've raised this issue in the beginners help forum as I think it is probably more appropriate for me.

Thanks

Well, fudge, it doesn't work.

I got to where Google Earth was loading. After showing the splash page for a few seconds, the system froze and I had to reboot.

Probably the darned nVidia graphics. Again.

Have you tried Puppies with different kernel versions, as was suggested?

Well I think there are two builds of 4.3.1, with different kernels. So it might be worth trying the other one to see if it makes a difference.

Anyone who wants to try this software should check after first installing the dri.pet if their graphics screen can resolve dri.
The easy way to check is via the /tmp/xerrs.log, check line 21.
May save you needlessly downloading a lot more wasted software.

I hate to bump threads, but I just updated the first post.

The new information might be of help to some of you who are still having trouble installing this.
