Graphix setup not persistent, no sound Puppy 5.0.1

#1 Post by m_shezy »

I am using Puppy 5.0.1 in both frugal and full hd install on same system. I love cool desktop and speed of puppy over others. There are 3 problem that are blowing my mind.

1- At every boot up puppy asks me graphics driver selection. Can it be stopped by adding some values in some files?

2- Sound does not work, I have already tried alsa.

3- System proxy does not work, i have put values in /etc/profile as below
http_proxy=http://my-server:port
ftp_proxy=http://my-server:port
and echo $http_proxy shows the value but PuppyBrowser, weather widget of pWidgets and firefox (when configured to use system proxy) do not find proxy settings.

Plz help me out i want to stay with puppy.

Did you have saved session when last time you poweroff?
Or maybe you have save session failured?
2- Sound does not work, I have already tried alsa
.
Did you have try "menu" -> "Setup" -> "Alsa sound wizard"?
3- System proxy does not work, i have put values in /etc/profile as below
http_proxy=http://my-server:port
ftp_proxy=http://my-server:port
and echo $http_proxy shows the value but PuppyBrowser, weather widget of pWidgets and firefox (when configured to use system proxy) do not find proxy settings.
Sorry,I haven't try this~
haha~

Yes i have saved my session in frugal install and it was successful.
Did you have try "menu" -> "Setup" -> "Alsa sound wizard"?
Yes I tried it in both installations, it detects my sound card which is Intel-82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW ICH-Family. I get no sound after completing the alsa wizard.

Please give specs for computer. Is your computer a laptop or desktop? If your computer is desktop, perhaps there are two soundcards: one onboard, one PCI. And maybe the onboard sound is disabled in BIOS, or you have the audio connector in the wrong audio device.

The 1th problem,
You can exit to command line and try "startx",if it goes to Wizard too,maybe it really has some troblem. test it,and feed back to me,maybe I can help you.

The 2th problem,
In my opinion puppy could suprot this sound card well.
try
# alsamixer
to make speaker and all options with full mod.

maybe just this problem.

This is a desktop machine with intel p4 processor and intel board with 1G RAM and 120G HD.
perhaps there are two soundcards
There is only one sound card which is onboard and it is enabled in BIOS. sound card chip is Intel-82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW ICH-Family.

No sound problem.

Try checking the retrovol settings. (Right-click on volume icon, select full) On some computers, the speaker volume is set to zero by default in newer Puppies.

Try checking the retrovol settings
try
# alsamixer
to make speaker and all options with full mod.
I tried both one by one and one of them did the job. I got sound although there is some noice with it.

samarai! I did as per your instruction and when i used startx command i got same blue Video setting wizard screen. I have ATI chipset and i always use ati from list.
3- System proxy does not work, i have put values in /etc/profile as below
http_proxy=http://my-server:port
ftp_proxy=http://my-server:port
and echo $http_proxy shows the value but PuppyBrowser, weather widget of pWidgets and firefox (when configured to use system proxy) do not find proxy settings.
this is still a problem, however i used about:config in PuppyBrowser and i got it working now but could not find any solution for weather widget of pWidgets.

G'day m_shezy,
I've recently done a few Pentium 3 and 4 installs and I found that some of the older Puppies work better than the newer ones, due to the older Linux Kernels having the right Drivers for older hardware. To find the most recent Puppy that is suitable for your system, I recommend going back through the most recent versions (including Retro versions), try booting each from CD and you might find one that works better than Puppy 5.0.1. I would try them in this order:
Puppy 5.0.0
Puppy 4.3.1
Puppy 4.3.1 Retro
Puppy 4.2.1
Puppy 4.2.1 Retro

If one works well from the CD, you can Frugal install it without having to remove your existing 5.0.1 installations. Just install the new version to it's own sub-folder in /mnt/home then give it an entry in the Grub menu.lst file to make it bootable.

Steve

P.S. I always get good download speeds from this website:
http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/distr/puppylinux/

There is a special thread for bugs in luci 5.00 and this could may be considered as a bug, so it's best to report there.
Also only post one topic at a time.
You have 3 topics, so it's best to make 3 different posts.
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

Sound and Video solved, Proxy is still problem

Béèm! Well if i could prove any of my problems as bug then i will post it there. Also my two problems have almost solved i.e. Sound and Video driver so only proxy problem is left, so let me discuss it here.
This is my /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Cause of I had run to graphc interface,so you can see there is "1920X1200" in this text,
samarai! my video wizard problem is solved somehow but i could not understand the behaviour. Could you plz explain me, i tell you what i did.
During booting of puppy when i got blue screen of Video wizard, i chose 'Probe' and accepted the recomended resoluton. then on next boot this video wizard had gone away and my /etc/X11/xorg.conf looked like yours, but if i select 'Chose' and on next screen typed 'ati' and then X starts ok but on next boot video wizard come back because my /etc/X11/xorg.conf was missing everthing below this line

Code: Select all

#everything past here is auto-generated by Puppy's Xorg Wizard...
I could not understand why is this. Anyhow now I can stop seeing Video wizard on every boot.

However my 3rd problem is still there and this is the only problem in this thread now and i rewrite it.
- System proxy does not work, i have put values in /etc/profile as below
http_proxy=http://my-server:port
ftp_proxy=http://my-server:port
and echo $http_proxy shows the value but Chromium Browser, weather widget of pWidgets do not find this proxy settings. I have 4 NIC intalled in my PC and only one is connected to a network which give me access to internet through proxy. other 3 NICs are not connected to any network. Chromium Browser and weather widget got connected to internet once and when i put the static ip to one of other 3 NIC they stop working even if i removed this settings and restarted system many times. plz anyone help me here too.

latest development in Proxy settings

#13 Post by m_shezy »

i discovered an intresting thing about the proxy for Chromium Browser and pWidgets. When i run both applications from their link i.e. Menu->Internet->Chromium Web Browser & Menu->Desktop->Desktop Settings->'Pwidgets tiny desktop app' do not find proxy settings but when i run them from urxvt command line i.e. chromium-browser and pwidgets then they find proxy and get connected to internet. Why this happen? can anyone tell me how to write script for this to run them from command line?

Proxy problem

#17 Post by m_shezy »

samarai! i have that export entries in my /etc/profile file and there are no proxy settings options in GUI of the Chromium Browser and pWidgets.

The interesting problem is, both applications can not connect to internet when they are started from their links BUT both can connect to internet when I start them from urxvt console by typing their commands like chromium-browser and pwidgets. I am surprised why this is happening. Aren't there any linux or puppy experts in this forum?

Who is the core developer of puppy linux, can i contact that person so that my problem could be solved?

You say this maybe will let other people to be carefully to answer your question,maybe they had loss confidence and patience to help you.
I am no "other people",but it really let me down.

The VARIABLES in linux can be divided into Shell's and Xorg's,
that's the answer why start from terminal should work,
try do something on /usr/share/applications/chrome.destop.Or, you can start from terminal everytime.

Sorry,I am not do well in Jwm,so,I can not help you.PLZ try to deal it by yourself.

Proxy Problem Solved

#20 Post by m_shezy »

I found the solution of my proxy problem. What i did is, i searched the scripts that is called when we click on the Chromium Browser and pWidgets icons. Then i added the export variables (http_proxy, ftp_proxy etc.) for proxy setting in those scripts. Now both applications find proxy settings from their start scripts and can connect to internet.
