Thanks for the suggestions. Please keep them coming. We do already have Imagmagick, included with Xara Extreme. I will refer back to this thread over the next 3 weeks while preparing Lucid Puppy 5.1 and try to get as many of the suggestions included in Puppy Package Manger as I can. Thanks.

I can see why people wanted Stellarium and we do have it now! However, I am afraid it is not working exactly right. Even if I tell it fullscreen, it takes about 1024x768 out of my 1650x1080 screen, and there is no window manager around it. Alt+Left-Click can move it. I was able to use it. Perhaps those who are more familiar with it can give me advice. It also requires the full xorg graphics with glx/dri.

I am sure it will only run in luci-20x, which is the development release for Lucid Puppy. There will be a new release, luci-205 later tonight or tomorrow--the graphics are available and Stellarium will be in the Puppy Package Manager.

Very good News. Stellarium works all the way. What an awesome program. You have to change from jwm to Icewm. I will post here when luci-205 is ready tomorrow.

Luci-205, a development release towards Lucid Puppy 5.10 is available

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 879#419879

Stellarium works completely as far as I can tell, but requires some resources; you will need to use Puppy Package Manager to install Icewm, and also the high performance graphics for your card.

This begins the public testing on the way to 5.1, so if you have the time we could use the help. Thanks.

PUP5 is looking good. But heres what I think will also help.

Any version of SAMBA (full)

This would allow setup of PUP5 for sharing within an existing workgroup on ANY LAN. Puppy would then be able to share files with Windows machines in the same way as Windows machines share with each other today.

I will write simple Howto for PUP5 if SAMBA becomes available in the distro. Or at the very least, a Repo or a PET for PUP5. And, down the road I may write a simple script that starts a PUP5 sharing on the existing LAN's workgroup (same as my Windows machines do out of the box.)

I think most understand the benefit of having CIFS on a LAN with Windows machines.

Thanks in advance for any consideration.
P.S. I have not found any acceptable setup of SAMBA (full) in latest PUPs. I understand how it might have gotten to this point (accidental). And Distrowatch has been reporting SAMBA in PUP5 even though it ...

Hi playdayz,

I am using lupu 5.0.0 with Quickpet 2.0, but have yet to see any update. I think that the original advice was to do a weekly check for updates, but I have probably missed an announcement on the current policy?

I was able to update Firefox from 3.6.3 to 3.6.4 and now 3.6.6 from within Firefox itself (which seems fine) and wonder if there are other packages which can be updated whilst awaiting a Quickpet Update or lupu 5.1?

My regards

Addendum 29th June:

@ playdayz - Thank you for your most helpful and comprehensive reply (three posts below).

5.0.0 is stable and working superbly well for me; so it is for me to give thanks and not for you to apologise.

PlayOnLinux

I would love a functional version of PlayOnLinux to be included in Lucid Puppy 5.1 or available for install via the package manager. I really miss it, and can't seem to compile it or get it setup right at all. :(

User Accounts

I would like to see a user account program and manager like in Windows. The lack of something like that is the only downside I can find in Puppy Linux.

Sir Jasper, I apologize for not providing some updates. I was kind of feeling my way along on Lucid Puppy 5.0, because it was the first time I did anything like that. I felt a lot of pressure to live up to Barry's standards. After the release there were some other things that had to be done (reconcile with Woof) and then to release 5.0.1 because there were more complaints of black screen than we anticipated. We still believe the update is a good feature and will be using it with 5.1.

This time around with 5.1 we have the basis of 5.00 which was basically decent. I also know what's going on a bit better. We believe that 5.1 is going to be a very good release and it is not that far away, 2 weeks or so. Until then one thing people might try is Mplayer. IMO there were just too many complaints about gxine, so we have replaced it with Mplayer.

Here are gnome-mplayer and mplayer. You need to install both. Gnome-mplayer is a frontend for mplayer. It is drag and drop onto the desktop icon, or open the program and look for files of course. I haven't been testing on 5.0.1 but I just run through some quick tests and it played everything that the 5.1 version plays--which is everything I have tried.

http://www.diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/g ... -Lucid.pet

http://www.diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/m ... 1.0rc3.pet

It will make Chromium 5 crash, so if you want to use both you should go to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and delete the 4 gecko-mediaplayer plugins. It was also reported that it might mess up the gxine installation.

People might also like visit the luci development page to check up on what's going on. There is a lot of software being discussed there and a lot going into qa new repo for puppy-lucid with many more programs the quality fo those in Quickpet. We could use help with the testing. Just for instance I am using a browser named Arora that is small, fast, and soothing to the eye--it will be available in Lucid Puppy 5.1.

Hi again playdayz,

I did not mean to take so much of your valuable time. I made an addendum to my post (some four above) thanking you.

Come August, although I am technically thick, I will see if there is any small way in which I can be a useful club member and try to help this star project.

My regards

If some one come face it Miro would be fantastic to have :D. It would also solve my current problem of what do I do in the mean time for a system to run Miro on. Its written in Python. If no one can make a package then I will try to make a working package. This I can do over time as I lean Python which I currently plan to do. Though it might have nooby mistakes!

I don't know if this is it or not? I made it blind--it is the full Ubuntu package of Samba 3.4.7 with all dependencies necessary for luci-205. The problem is that I don't know what to do to test it or to set it up.

Bibletime (2.7-1~lucid1), the latest stable packages for Ubuntu Lucid are found here. I installed 2.5.1 using ppm which installed the necessary dependencies (clucene, qt4, and others) and then used the deb packages to install 2.7.1 and it runs fine in 207. Although menu icons are missing in both 2.5.1 and 2.7.1.

BibleTime is a completely free Bible study program. The program's user interface is built with Qt framework. The software uses the SWORD programming library to work with over 200 free Bible texts, commentaries, dictionaries and books provided by the Crosswire Bible Society.

It would be useful to have in the system tray an indication of the cpu frequency and temperature.
A nice place could be on a right-click on xload.
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).
Consult Wikka
Use peppyy's puppysearch

Hi Jim, I have Bibletime built--but we need the icons to appear to put it into PPM. Does it also need Sword to be included--the one I built is empty! Thanks.

Update. The tool bar icons are now working. All that is left I think is to get some content. Thanks for your instructions.

Playdayz, thanks for preparing this, I posted how to get the content on your luci-209 topic. Great that you've gotten the menu icons to work, ubuntu is just now getting them to work with 2.5.1, kubuntu's 2.7 is working great.

You guys are really doing a great job adding useful programs, it really enhances ppm and the distribution.

Cheers,
Jim

What did you do to get the menu icons to work? Starting with a fresh installation of luci-209, installed your new pet and it has no icons. Apparently, something on your test machine is still needed by the pet.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim, I can't remember what Id id to get the icons working and I can't do it again  I *thought* I knew (that it was the command update-python-modules). But that is not right. So what I did was to hide the toolbar--it only had a few icons anyway

Latest programs in puppy-lucid repo

#39 Post by playdayz »

Bibletime 2.7.1 is now in the puppy-lucid repo in PPM. jim1911 did the grunt work to get it working.

Here is the direct link
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... -Lucid.pet

I also added Emacs23 by request, a super text editor
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... -Lucid.pet

I also added Jokosher which was publicized by Ubuntu--it looks like a way to build music, with midi and audio tracks--very simple and easy.
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... -Lucid.pet

I also added Sox by request--a command line audio toolkit
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... -Lucid.pet

I just added Conky to the PPM. it is a graphical desktop system monitor--that can monitor something like 300 different things! There are sample Conky configs and screenshots all over the web. The configs that are included are not much. If you have some better ones--or make them--please post them so we can possibly include them in 5.1. Thanks.

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... -Lucid.pet

I added Google Earth to the PPM. Here is the direct link.

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... -Lucid.pet

It needs glx/high graphics, that is Xorg_High for Radeon, Intel, and Other (not Nvidia), and one of the nvidia pets for nvidia.

hi play,i thought i would just put in my 10 pence worth for ya,for the average user there a few, openshot would be a cool one, xvidcap which actually works from the lucid repo,s,as does avidemux, although some of the plugins did not want to come out to play.
i think recordmydesktop would be nice but it may be a bummer trying to get it to work.
i know we have cinarella for video editing but it is not to everyone's taste,so openshot which i said to begin with would be a good alternative,i did talk to the guy a long while ago and and he said he would love it if it could be ported to pup.
ahh and also getting mcwibber to work with all the dependencies would be nice.
also for our cloud users,a direct link to zoho, the online office,it is available in ubuntu now.....
hope you don't mind the bits I've put in.
