Will Puppy be faster on a SSD?

#1 Post by mtiqbal »

I am running quirky 1.2 from a sdcard. My computer has a dual core processor and 2G ram. Sdcard is 16G. Quirky is frugal installed. System works fast. Boot and shutdown is a bit slow.

I am thinking to get a 32G SSD and install quirky on that to speed up the system. I think that will speed up the boot and shut down. Is that going to speed up the the normal operation say browsing?

I tried Fatdog64. But quirky is much faster. Why fatdog64 is slower? thanks

As for as the size of the ssd card is concerned that is not the problem. What you need is a card with the highest write speed to speed up your shutdown. Same goes for the boot up the read speed will be the limiting factor. The next important thing how you access the card if it is though a low cost reader that can be slowing you down. I am not an expert mind you I did some reading on it a while back.

Keep in mind one your shutdown and boot up time Puppylinux runs in system ram when you use a ssd card. And write only when you shutdown. If you did a lot while in puppy it will take it some time to write to the ssd card

Just my 2 cents

Enjoy

G'day,
I'm guessing Fatdog is slower because it has more apps running in the background. One of my "rescued from Garbage Tip" PCs has a CPU overheating problem and I've found Puppy 431 runs 10 degrees cooler than either 421 or 501. In the case of 421 it is the background apps that slow-down and heat-up the CPU.
I am running quirky 1.2 from a sdcard.
How is the SD Card plugged in at the moment?
- to a Card Reader which goes in the USB Port ?
- to an adaptor which plugs in to the Hard Drive connection ?

Your SSD will plug in where a Hard Drive would normally go. It will appear to Puppy as though it is a Hard Drive and Puppy will go into the PUPSTATE for a regular Hard Drive, which means frequent "saves" being written, which means wearing-out the SSD at a great rate of Knots.

Or am I wrong about that? Maybe with the new SSDs it doesn't matter? Does a new SSD give you same durability as a Hard Drive ?

My laptop doesn't have a HDD so I save to a Flash Drive in the USB Port. So Puppy goes into a PUPSTATE which allows me to cut "saves" down to zero during a session, and I can also give myself the option of whether to "save" or "not save" at the end of each session. This reduced number of "saves" gives the Flash Drive a longer life.

For a few months I ran an SD Card via an adaptor in the Hard Drive connection and I didn't like it because I lost the above ability to control how & when "saves" happen. In the menu.lst file I even changed the boot code from pmedia=ataflash to pmedia=usbflash in an attempt to regain control of the "saves" but it didn't work. Because it was plugged into the Hard Drive conection I guess Puppy decided my pmedia=usbflash code was bullshit and just ignored it.

Before buying the SSD I would research everything thoroughly.

Bear in mind that a sata HDD can go to 6Gbit/sec and a SSD 2,4Gbit/s

Beem: So your suggestion is to go with a SATA II Hard Drive instead of SSD?

My computer is Zotac zbox (http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/zota ... g-for-250/) It has a SDcard slot ang my 4x SDcard is in that slot.

My question: Say I buy a SATA II HD and install quirky on that (frugal). Is that going to speed up my computer? (I know that will speed up boot and shut down.) But is that going to speed up overall operation and say browsing? thanks.

I just wanted to draw the attention on SSD <-> HDD
Looks like a nice box with a small footprint.
It is not clear what models exist, but I found one which has a 2,5-inch HDD.
If that is the model you have, yes use the HDD.

If it is not, SSD isn't necessarily bad and will work with a puppy frugally installed. A HDD might give some better performance.
Also SSD, as I understand it, is a flash device, which could wear out more rapidly and certainly compared to a HDD.

As for browsing, a lot is done in memory and things depend on the internet speed as well. So I don't think you'll notice a difference whether SSD or HDD is used.
