Thank you 01micko.
Coolpup suggested this and it seems to have worked

Have you tried updating dhcpcd:

coolpup is amazing. We will use this one in luci-214, unless it gives me trouble before that. Thanks Lobster.

Making sure I understand--on first boot you get automatic ethernet. But not on subsequent boots. And that is corrected with the newer dhcpcd.

I upped my screen font to 96 (Menu/Desktop/desktop settings/global font size)
and got the garbled display in the enclosed pic :?

I simultaneously (by opening 3 instances of quickpet) downloaded and installed three programs - just about to test but it seemed to go OK :)

ok graphics testers...

A new little utility just to test some code

graphix_test

Open a terminal and at the prompt type

Code: Select all

graphix_test
You should get the output that will be in the first run screen with your correct full card model, and details of such down the bottom as an extra.

Works ok on the 4 machines I have available to me at the moment.

I particularly want to hear from nVidia card owners.

Cheers

Lobster, since this is a first run only thing I don't think we'll bother too much about it, there are far more pressing issues.

OTOH, that is my opinion and playdayz may disagree.

FWIW, it was formatted that way such that all the lines appear even, with the same margins. It can be unformatted but gtkdialog will place the lines where ever it wants, just doesn't look pretty.

About bedtime here and I'm back on the old test box,but it does work. Will try it on Nvidia tomorrow. :)

For your Intel graphics card, Intel Corporation 82810E DC-133 (CGC) Chipset Graphics Controller (rev 03) , we think the best add on driver is Xorg_High.pet . It would be required for some programs and games with high graphcial content and your desktop might seem a bit more snappy. It is available in Quickpet under Drivers

Coolpup suggested this
With 96d.p.i try using as well:
Menu > Desktop > Desktop Settings > Chtheme > Font DejaVu Sans 11

It is the set-up I have.
. . . meanwhile . . .

National keyboards at first boot

#951 Post by mories »

One way to get a national keyboard (non us) working at the first boot (and ever) directly to the desktop, it would be to include the following:

XKBMAP=`cat /etc/keymap`
setxkbmap -layout $XKBMAP

in .xinitrc (/root /.xinitrc) or in an item in /root /Startup.

The /etc/keymap is informed by the init script to the value of pkeys boot parameter.

Apologies Lobster

There is a "height" attribute that need not be in the first-run.sh. I just tested and it can be fixed in a jiffy... only thing, it may not be small screen friendly

Oh and just to clarify, I'm using a frugal install on a usbstick pmedia=usbflash
One more thing to try then. Thanks for your patience.

The frugal install should have a file /boot/grub/menu.lst (but I dont' know much about usb installs). This would be the thing to try. Don't use pfix=nox. We found that the i915.modeset=1 worked on one Intel 855 so I would like to make sure of yours. Please notice the i915.modeset=1 at the end of the kernel line. In luci-213 it was only working on CD boot--it would not have been effective on a frugal boot. But this would make it so.

Code: Select all

title Lucid Puppy luci-214 (on /dev/sda2)
  rootnoverify (hd0,1)
  kernel /luci-214/vmlinuz pmedia=atahd pfix=copy psubdir=luci-214 i915.modeset=1
  initrd /luci-214/initrd.gz
# Linux bootable partition config ends#
Slight tangent, but it might be important: is there any reason why xorgwizard only runs the second time I type it?
Yes, on first boot xorgwizard simply writes the abbreviated xorg.conf file, and then it overwrites itself with the regular xorgwizard and exits so that the auto config can take place.

So the first time you run it it is just overwriting itself with the regular xorgwizard, which runs the second time.

Is it possible for you to make a CD from the iso and try to boot from that?
Ah ha! Success! Houston, we had a typo! I wasn't typing the exact right thing (missing out an all important '.') so it worked ! Booted straight into the desktop. I am so impressed.
Just so you know,
puppy pfix=ram, i915.modeset=1
works.
Will test more, see if I can get java and openoffice to play nice - they were absolutely fine on 500 & 501 - both on a frugal install on my usb stick, so should be able to get it working. If not, installing java into the dev_save and using an sfs for openoffice will be just fine too.
Now all I have to do is get puppy to recognise my mouse's scroll wheel and all will be fine [edit: mouse just fine after running through locale and keyboard set ups]

[edit update: facepalm]
OK, so must actually pay attention, or will be sent to back of class. Right, so I need i915.modeset=1 otherwise when I reboot it still blackscreens.

Oh - and I don't have a menu.lst, no grub. But all i had to do was to stick i915.modeset=1 in to my ext.conf, so the last three lines look like this:

label puppy
kernel vmlinuz
append intrd=intrd.gz pmedia=usbflash pfix=copy i915.modeset=1

So basically I can keep the same ext.conf for booting (the usbstick is formatted to ext3 - only way to get the symlinking to work) and update luci whenever the next version comes out. mood =
Keep up the great work! It is really appreciated.

and it boots and reboots quite happily. Right, java time.

Mick,
Did a fresh install on another pc and got the same issue ref report-video.

I've now fixed it, just needed a path, as rxvt doesn't follow the setup paths.

Can anyone give me an answer to what Trolltech.conf is in /root/.config

sorry folks but 213 from cd pfix=ram, comes up to video with max resolution, which I can't use, any attempt to change it into any other is black screen of death.

yes, 01mick, plus tried the i915.modeset=1; defining a driver instead of probe and xvesa, also starting with nox and going from there, all gave me the same result (ok at 1600x1200@85hz, dead anything else), 212 was ok with me. :?

Tested 213 last night with my Intel 855 laptop.

Can confirm, like everyone else, that the live CD boots direct to desktop when Xorg autoconfigs.

This is the first time I have used Live CD, rather than frugal, for ages. I forgot how to do it. Very important to do pfix=ram - it updates/trashes my 211 save file I had hanging around!

More annoyingly it copies the sfs file to my hard disk when I didn't ask it to! I know why it does this - it is something Barry likes. It was taken out in 4.2.1 but Barry like it so it is back in his puppies. Do we like it?

Great to hear that Darwinev0lved has finally done so! I could not understand why, despite having the same graphic card as the rest of us, he kept having problems. Those pesky '.'!

It seems that everybody is now reporting boot to desktop - although I am not sure if we have got any ATI Radeon testers - which might have problems.

I'm a bit worried about scsijon's report that when he tries to alter resolution he gets black screen again. I haven't tried this. When you go into xorgwizard, for whatever reason, it is very important not to choose 'probe' for driver. That WILL black screen. You have to choose the Intel driver.

Playdayz - I think you are a bit optimistic that only 50% of us will want to use the keyboard/resolution setter on first boot. It defaults to a US keyboard - do users of that keyboard make up 50% of Puppy users?

May I second rjbrewer's wise words about a few instructions on the need for setting up the kernel parameter should anyone do a hard disk install. Alternatively, maybe this isolinux.cnf fix is only temporarary and ultimately you may follow the suggestions on Barry's blog on how it might be hardwired into the puppy scripts.
