Jemimah, The first tests are positive. 1, 2, 3. And that is with the 2.5MB version. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for checking on the forum. In one scenario we would just use it for those three items so we could test it pretty thoroughly. It is just what we need. Your info brightened up my whole day. I will check with technosaurus to see what he thinks.

Here it is for testing -> http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 88&t=51971
I just installed Midori, in Luci-218, and I can confirm 1 and 3 and I'm posting from it now.The download of Firefox 4.0b3 just finished too.

Regards
Here is a .pet called Rutilt.

It's been around a long time and I use it on all my Puppy installs for
wireless info and realtime signal strength when moving about.

Puts a little icon in tray when activated.

Thanks, this is a nice pet

But it doesn't replace the hover network icon ability as in Windows
It should show my ESSID when I hover over the network icon.

The first thing I do is download a big browser
I thought browser wars had finished.
Don't ever use 'Maya' - we did have that for a short while in Puppy [shudder]
- it is often cutting edge but just too weird to use . . .

Other than that small browsers may be a personal preference
Some people need javascript and flash - others are minimalists
Some value every second and others want smaller size or a command line browser [NOOOOO !!!!]

My advice (easier to say than implement) is to think how we can offer
the smaller browsers AND more of the Lucid compiled ppm programs in
Quickpet.
One way might be to extend Lucid News with an offline (provided with an ISO) and online option . . .
Something for the future perhaps . . .

Browser questions can be answered in Luci Tips as it develops

Precord (ppm) does not seem to be working?

Before I forget the desktop default icons seemed to have improved (more shape differentiation.
I like . . . )
in fact I must like a lot because it is normally one of the first things I change

Not so lately Thanks Warren :)

Hi Playdayz

That is realy good news that you have midori working, you must have a cleaner install, (can anyone remember what pet removes installed programs in lucid?) (on second thoughts will wait for the next version and let you install it properly)

we still have 1 more test left dont we? if so what about installing it and we can give it a run out

do you want us to keep looking for other options just in case?

It is looking very good everyone
Cheers
Stripe

another thought what about making the three options run with the default browser that people install? (but then you would need internet access to set up a printer) (sorry thinking out loud)

But you would need internet access to get puppynews so that could be made to work only with the default downloaded browser (and no need to change it),
so you could get away with the installed browser just opening cups and help? (so puppy would still be fully functional if you didnt have internet access)

Hope that helps (If it makes sense?)

What we need: A small fast browser that
1) Will run Puppy Help--that means the drop down menus.
2) will run Cups--again drop down menus
3) will run LupuNews--that means will download correctly.

1) OK
2) OK. Installed HP1020 ok.
3) Not quite right but links are downloadable everywhere else. From News page links works > right click > dowload link...

There is something different in Lucid Puppy News page !!!

Posting from Skipstone. Not all the links are readable in pages. So not working quite right. But it is fun to test :)

I have never understood this obsession with finding the ideal tiny browser. Puppy has now "officially" passed the traditional 100 MB mark. Pick a full-featured browser as the default, even if it's Seamonkey.
LOL. That is one possible approach. It would make many things easier. We would like to stay with the Choose a Browser approach though. I personally do not think of it as the "ideal tiny browser," rather as a "system tool" that will do 3 specific things. Users will then Choose their own browser for surfing the internet.

For what it's worth, my goal is to be under 133MB tops. If midori pans out we will be back around 126MB, which is 3MB less than 5.1. Tronkel said it well in the forum I thought: that extra 30% allows us to easily prepare many packages for inclusion in Quickpet and PPM so it is a good bargain. Even at 130MB, Puppy is still a lean and fast "full-featured compact distro."

It needs seamonkey installed doesn't it?

Hi Playdayz

No it does not need seamonkey, you want under 130mb, then we will do it. (somehow)

As a last resort make them all operate off the default browser. (true you wont be able to set up a printer without downloading a browser) but how many people will be downloading without internet??

Understood. I was being somewhat facetious.

Hi all

Had another look at puppybrowser, can you just stop it from opening puppynews and put a message up like "you need to install a browser to view this page"??

then the job would be sorted

Playdayz. Skipstone 0.9.7 works with preinstalled /us/lib/seamonkey. Latest version 1.0.1 wasnt satisfied with preinstalled libs. I updated the pet to use that latest version (still -2008) and the development stopped then. Even homepage does not exist anymore.

Here's a thought. Since Lupu doesn't come with a full-featured browser, then there's no great need to come with an email client either.

You could remove the old Sylpheed from the image and offer it as a Quick Pet. This could be the most recent version with spell-checking added. For example, here.

Sylpheed and pctorrent download could be removed.

Has somebody succeeded in downloading with pctorrent ?

Or really use it for bittorrent downloading ?

There is Transmission in Lupu repo.

Fresh frugal install of Luci-219.Only installed Xorg-High so far, using Midori to post.
Used Midori to download and save Opera 10.61 from LupuNews.....no problem. Can confirm that Midori doesn't open the second tab on the help page too.
This build of Midori does have the missing scrollbar bug, see screenie.Necessary to grab the lower right corner and "shake" it and the scrollbar returns.
Otherwise, all the usual things still working fine on the initial boot.

Hi all

2 clean fugal installs (800mhz and 3200mhz machines) midori working great on both of them (never noticed the scrollbar issue)

Might be an idea to remove midori from the internet menu if you do not want it to be used as a full browser.

Big Thank You to Jemmiah and Technosaurus for the idea and Playdayz and 01micko for making it happen

Will get back to testing
