What works, and doesn't, for you. Be specific, and please include Puppy version.

Disturbing error message from Dell Optiplex 1150 (Solved)

#1 Post by Emporata »

I have recently started receiving an error message from this computer at boot-up. It says:

"WARNING: Dell's Disk Monitoring System has detected that drive 0 on the primary EIDE Controller is operating outside of nornal specifications. It is advisable to immediately back up your data and replace your hard drive disk by calling your support desk or Dell Computer Corporation.

Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility."

When I first received this error message, I had Ubuntu 9.10 on the machine. I have since used the Ubuntu disk to check the disk for errors and it found none. I took Ubuntu off and installed Puppy Linux 5.1.1 but I am still getting the message. I am not sure what to do. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

This issue is solved in that the computer in question is stil under warranty so I need not bother with it anymore. However, the drivers on their site are .exe and though Dell says their fix is linux-compatible, I never found any driver in any kind of linux file on their site. Perhaps I just could not find them. It would not be the first time but, still, it is something to think about if one is relying on the Dell site to solve problems with their products.

Those are .exe files. This machine does not have Windows. Can the files be run with Wine?

if you have a windows computer with a floppy drive
you could make a floppy disk

*if it runs though the windows installer or modifies any files in a normal windows install and you dont have windows that complicates things a bit
so I dont know if that would work

since you are under warranty it would be better to confirm
if you really do have failing hardware from Dell
they will probably replace your drive
