I just tested and luci-239 does not change the volume levels in retrovol, but luci-240 (zzz_scripts) and luci-241pre (original scripts) *both* change the volume levels.

Does that suggest the problem is not with either set of scripts, but somewhere else in the latest Woof (which was first applied to luci-240--luci-239 had the previous Woof)? Or, in both sets of scripts.

While we're having fun..

To address bigpup's (and probably a bunch more user's) issue of not selecting the correct graphics driver I am completely rewriting the graphics test.. much simpler. It's more like Barry's video_upgrade_wizard now which I believe is more accurate at selecting the correct driver.. (oh, bigpup.. I found the correct database for your card .. 173.XX ). The good thing is that no one will notice anything except that they will have the correct selection made for them!

This will be part of the latest quickpet when available (later today).

Something else I noticed about the audio volume when rebooted. Many people have been getting muted sound. I have not had that but I have noticed that the volumes are changed when rebooting--two messages above.

I have now noticed that the volume on the third audio card is *not* changed when rebooting--it's volume is preserved just as is. (My second card is not really a sound card.)

So how come it is doing things to the first audio card only?

I've recently updated my P3 machine from 238 to 240 (full install). Everything works great so far! I don't have any sound issues and all my files and bookmarks were preserved.

I wouldn't be so sure the order of sound cards matters. I'd suspect the driver for the first (or the config/handling thereof) to be the culprit.

Wow, excellent news. JWM is (I think?) the lightest and fastest window manager in the world that also has a modern look and feature set.

Suggestion: include this version of JWM with 5.2.

Bug/suggestion: The only remaining problem, it seems, is in updating the jwm configuration files. Too little is user configurable, and the scripts that write to the config file (and jwm tray config, etc) are a bit buggy (see the problem I reported earlier about applying a JWM theme).

Suggestion: I'm excited to hear about ogle. Its size and speed make it perfect for general inclusion in the distro.

Question: My computer (well, my mom's) has 256MB ram and the intel 8x845G chipset (similar to that of another user on here, but an 845 version instead of his 865 version). The computer is one of the most common "junkers" available, the Dell Inspiron 2400. I previously reported problems running 239 for any extended period of time (such as running firefox) for it would eventually crash to the prompt. I initially suspected memory issues, but later suspected booting with "noapic" would fix the issue as it did with xubuntu on the same system.

However, in case the latter is wrong, I'd like to revisit the "run out of ram" issue just in case. It will be some time (read: not until this weekend) before I'm able to test again, and I was wondering about how woof in 240 and above handle swap. I made a swap partition in gparted, but 239 did not use it at all. I heard there was a way to make a "swap.sfs" or something earlier, but could not figure it out.

Suggestion: I propose a tool for enabling swap (at least the pupswap.sfs or similar) to be created at install time (universal installer?) so that ram-limited computers could have less trouble. It would be great if I figure how to do it manually, but that wouldn't help other newbies, would it?

Suggestion: better tray configuration -- I'm in the US (and so is everyone I know personally), and everyone here hates the default "military" 24-hour clock. It would be great if the localization setup at first boot would take care of this, as having to search for the option to configure this may be found buried in Desktop settings. It would also be more convenient to implement more right-click power on the tray to easily change this and other tray settings.

Bug: I've learned USB installation is still quite glitchy (239 again) even when the syslinux.cfg file is manually updated with the boot source term "usbflash." Though it boots, the universal installer checks (again) for a CD rather than a USB stick. When the USB is mounted and the installer then directed to the root of the USB, it fails to detect the files until run again. When it is run again, it apparently recognizes the files and proceeds from the point it left off.

Suggestion: call bootloader (Grub or Grub4dos, depending on if the user specifies he has Windows or not) during/after installation. Not a single person I've given puppy to so far has managed to install it (frugal or otherwise) and then successfully boot into again.

Suggestion: It would be helpful for standard folders to be set up for newbies. For instance, when a USB drive is inserted, most people would not know to look under /mnt/sdb1, but expect either a link on the desktop or in a "my computer" type place.

Bug(?): full install won't use swap partition like normal distros.

It's not a bad idea to setup alsamixer with personal setting anyway. I had to fuss around to get my skype DTMF tones to trigger my answering machine correctly.

Fresh frugal install of 241 on the old P3. Everything worked on initial boot,even sound. Installed the usual Xorg_high and SeaMonkey and rebooted. Sound was muted again.
Was going to post a screenshot but mtPaint Screenshot seems to be missing in action.

Same results in Luci-241 Trinity. Upgraded from 240, sound muted everytime I reboot.

Can get sound working with Retrovol but on reboot all settings are wiped out.
No problems with 239 and back.

Computer 1:

This one needs to be booted with pfix=nox,ram or else it goes to a
black screen.
1st bootup at prompt run xorgwizard and choose vesa, sound is working
and volume can be adjusted with retrovol.
Reboot to create save file.
After rebooting retrovol shows volume at 100% but when I click on an
ogg file it plays but no sound, run setup alsa sound wizard and I hear
two barks.
Sound is back and volume can be adjusted with the retrovol icon.

Computer 2:

On first bootup goes to desktop and I hear two barks,retrovol volume is set
at 75% and sound works.
After rebooting to create save file retrovol is showing volume set to
100%, sound is working but volume is very low and when I right click
the retrovol icon and select configure it doesn't show any active
sliders in the left side of the window, it didn't at first boot either on this
computer or computer 1.
I run the setup alsa sound wizard and I now have sound, retrovol is
back at 75%,right clicking on the retrovol icon shows no active
sliders in the left side of the window, but when I click on an ogg
file it plays and the sound can be adjusted by the retrovol icon.

Computer 3:

On first bootup goes to desktop and I hear two barks,retrovol volume
is set at 75% and sound works.Right clicking on the retrovol icon in
the tray shows no active slider in the left side of the window.
After rebooting to create a save file retrovol is showing sound set at

So there isn't any connection between the retrovol configuration
window and the sound hardware on any of these computers but after
running the setup alsa sound wizard the sound can be adjusted using
the retrovol icon in the tray.

Edit: Rebooted computer 3 again and retrovol shows 100% volume but a song plays but volume is faint so it needs the setup alsa sound wizard again.

Thanks for working to improve this. Video drivers are about as much fun as trying to get the best setup for a printer or modem. If you can get this to work you have done a great thing for Puppy Linux.
Support for Nvidia seems to be solid, but do not forget the other half of the planet that uses ATI products. Just like Nvidia, one driver does not fit all. They do seem to be providing support for Linux at their support web site.
I read that they decided to go in two directions, legacy and new stuff.

Your ethernet hardware seems to be quite new and doesn't have a driver built into Ubuntu as of yet.

However, there's a driver included in the compat-wireless stack that you can use (I have no idea why they included an ethernet driver in compat-wireless, but according to these emails

To download, compile and install the driver, first go to

http://linuxwireless.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6

and download the file named "compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2"

(you can't download it in the terminal because of anti-hotlinking).
Save it to your desktop.
Then run these commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential
cd ~/Desktop
tar -xjvf compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2
cd compat-wireless*
scripts/driver-select atl1c
make
sudo make install

Then reboot.
Hopefully your ethernet will work automatically after reboot; if not, run:

sudo modprobe atl1c

to insert the driver. Let me know how it goes.

We can probably make your wireless work too, if you're interested. "

Compat-wireless is not a way to go. I have tried to compile it for ath9k in several puppies. It compiles ok, but when installing, it does not work. It needs different other module framework and the result is error in modprobe: unknown symbols.

For wired lan, there is also AR8152 source available, which compiles and works just fine. I have that atl1e.ko already compiled, but i think tempestuous pet works just fine. If not, i can upload my compiled module also.

Almost every day new post comes in this Forum on installation problem.
A typical story:

• Run the Universal Installer and install Puppy on a USB flash drive.
• The Universal Installer says the MBR of the USB drive is probably OK as is, so take the default.
• Doesn't boot up.
• Look up the menu and find the 'Grub config' there and run it.
• The 'Grub config' aborts to istall, says the target is not linux partition.
• Ok, run Gparted and format with ext4, and run again the Universal Installer.
• Grub install makes strange entry in the menu.lst and no information on the Frugal install.
• Doesn't boot up.
• ... TO BE CONTINUED, try and error...

Again, I'd like to say: Who can manage with the 'Universal Installer' and 'Grub config'?

The 'Grub config' is not only useless. That's the trap.
And the name of 'Grub4Dos' is somewhat confusing. The 'Grub4Dos' is actually 'Grab NOT ONLY for dos'.
The 'Grub4Dos config' is the killer. It is upper compatible with legacy grub.
It does not depend on whether the user has Windows or not.

Try the 'Frugal installer' and 'Grub4Dos config' instead of the 'Universal Installer' plus 'Grub config'.
It must be an exciting experience.
