a suggestion

If a device name is supplied to aplay, it then opens that device exclusively. This change to Pmusic 1.4.1 allows other programs to use your audio device for playback while Pmusic is playing if the device supports multiple streams(like SBLive for example) and "sound card" is set to "auto".

Replaces line 188 in func_player:

Code: Select all

		if [ "$SOUND_DEVICE" != "auto" ]; then
			echo "' -ss $SS -f au - 2>> $WORKDIR/ffmpeg_output | aplay -D plughw$DEVICE 2> /dev/null" >> $WORKDIR/exec
		else
			echo "' -ss $SS -f au - 2>> $WORKDIR/ffmpeg_output | aplay 2> /dev/null" >> $WORKDIR/exec
		fi

You're right!
But..... earlier reports told that using '-D plughw' switch made the sound much better for several users.

We could maybe offer an option:
'Allow other audio-sources than Pmusic (this disables sound-card setting)'

Would you express it differently?

That figures. In my case, I get a 1/3 second delay with 'plughw' in addition to the locked audio device. Sound quality is not effected here.

That sounds fine to me.

OK, it is time to ask for help. I cannot figure out how to use Pmusic as I want to use an audio player.

What I want to do is to click a folder and have all music in the folder and in included folders automatically added to a playlist. I apologize for being so obtuse here.

To add all tracks in a directory, you should use the button 'add all' in the add/open dialog, or the similar menu-item in the Music-source menu. There is no recursive option for this feature. The reason should be described well in the FAQ (written by overdrive and don570):
When I dump all my thousands of songs into a playlist, Pmusic becomes real slow?
Yes, Depending on your CPU, Pmusic starts to become slow after 150-300 songs. But there is a solution. Please keep in mind a typical 150 song playlist is probably a 8+ hour long session. If your collection is larger than that, I recommend you to index the music files. It is a much faster way of selecting your songs to play. See next question for more information.

Why should I index my music?
There is no need of indexing your audio files. Pmusic has a builtin file-browser where you can find your music and add it to the playlist. This works perfectly for small music collections. If you on the other hand experience that it's hard to navigate through your huge collection, it's time to consider indexing.

You might think that 'indexing' sounds advanced, - but it's not. it is only a table holding information about all your songs and albums. This makes it easy to sort your music by artist, album, song name.... Also, Pmusic lists 20000 songs from your index in a blink of an eye. Open a directory with the same amount of files, you can drink a cup of coffee while waiting. While building the table (the index), Pmusic scans your system for audio files. It is possible to run various filters during this scan. ie. 'files in the same directory belongs together, and should be put in a new album'. Pmusic offers some simple filters depending on your collection structure.

But the biggest advantage of an index is its speed when searching for a song. Pmusic searches so fast that the search result shows up while typing. The downside is that the index must be refreshed after adding more music to your collection.

So if you have a large library, indexing is the way to go. Because of the search speed, you can create a playlist "session" to suit your needs of the moment quite quickly. When you have a playlist the way you want it, you can always save it for reuse later.

review pmusic 1.4.2

#670 Post by don570 »

review of pmusic 1.42 while using luci 238

It seemed faster, especially the playing of tracks went
smoother.... less buffering.

Negatives:

Still one minute of cd player motor speedup for
start of each track of Audio CD.

In Manager Window mode I still get crashes when I use
File > Open Song/Playlist. Never the first time I select it though.

.rar files still show up when I do indexing of a partition
or when I do File > Open Song/Playlist and click on button 'Add All'

I discovered that a track of an Audio CD can be made a Bookmark,
and it still remains after the CD is ejected. The best way
to handle this would be to grey out the button 'Fetch playing'
while an Audio CD is in the tray.

Some suggestions:

The vertical lines around time elapsed (in the middle of window)
should be replaced by the more common rounded brackets.

In the Classical window mode there is a functioning menu item
File > Index
When I tried it , it worked but I had to switch over to the Manager
window mode to see the results. Very confusing to a new user! :?

But overall I like this version.

Hello Don
Thank you again for a nice review.
don570 wrote:Still one minute of cd player motor speedup for

I have only 2 CD-readers to test, and these work properly........ Does pCD works for you? The code is line 178-184 in /usr/local/pmusic/func_player if you want to take a look. It would have been interesting to know if it is cdda2wav or ffmpeg that troubles
don570 wrote:In Manager Window mode I still get crashes when I use

I have updated the Manager mode for 1.4.3, so let's see if that helps. I can't reproduce the bug.

A matter of taste I guess :) I tried many options before ended up with |

I see the potential if the user indexes before he/she opens the Music-source window. Trying to show songs/collections without any index sends user to the index window. There might be a structural rewrite in the future that ends this issue.

Hi all, hi zigbert,

have a little present

working on a puppy-derivat (based on puppy4.12).
Had tried to find in a newer pmusic.
Got 1.4.2 from here, it works fine, it works fine in german.

And because You put a lot of work in pmusic, ( I had read the first 20 pages of this Post here, that was enough) here is a little "Thank you":
Image
Image
(a pic of full Puppy-Screen with open pmusic is at:
http://www.eastler.de/puppy/pmusic1.42/Screenshot.png(764K)
a Pic of only the pmusic-Window is at:
http://www.eastler.de/puppy/pmusic1.42/ ... window.png(192K)

Yes, its a theme  named "DEasBrushed" (DEas=my Puppy-derivat not published yet)
build on Puppy4.12 (should work on all Systems)
for pmusic 1.42

The theme is packed in a Archive (tar.gz) and available with:
http://www.eastler.de/puppy/pmusic1.42/ ... hed.tar.gz (970K)

download this archive anywhere, rename it to Theme_Pmusic1.42_DEasBrushed.pet
(delete .tar.gz and add .pet to the filename) and you have a ready pet
(sorry, something goes wrong with pets in webspace to this forum ???
if I name the file in webspace a *.pet, the download extends the
filesize (+1K), if I rename the same file in Webspace to *.tar.gz
the download brings exact the right file to your pc :-( )

The pet installs all pics and rc-files in
/usr/local/pmusic/themes/DEas_Brushed
(nothing more, no change at your System)
Install the pet, start pmusic1.4.2, go on preferences
change to DEas_Brushed Theme.
an enjoy (hope).

After 2 days of work every free time, I had to stop now working on this theme,
if someone wants to change the Button/Menu-icons it would be nice, I had no more time for it

Zigbert, please feel free to grap it from there and put it on your space for download.

Hope I'll got you and all others here smiling

Eastler

EDIT 12.Dec.2010: changed downloadlink from *.pet to *.tar.gz

hi all, hi zigbert,

Im sad, something do not work with pets on my webspace (1und1)
simply rename the file (no new upload) to *.tar.gz and all goes well.
Rename it back to *.pet extends the downloaded file about 1K???

Ok, changed it to a *.tar.gz archive, now you can download it,
then rename it to a *.pet and you have it.

If you have webspace without a own stupid intelligence,
please put it there as a pet

Thanks a lot, hope it works now,

Eastler

P.S: seen, a lot more programms for puppy are from zigbert -- hehe -- a good man
Next I need is PProcess I want in newer Version in my puppy, lets see, maybee I can do there also some contributions

I can't seem to change themes in version 1.4.2.

There are two "no theme" themes in the list:

Update: after closing and reopening 1.4.2 I was able to change themes.

I tested your m3u-file in Puppy 5.1.1, and it works fine. Have you seen this in other Puppies???

There is another wrinkle to this. I just tested Wary .9.8(pfix=ram) and found that it loads the playlist correctly... unless you use the rox open with function on the m3u file, in which case the result is the same as I was seeing on Quirky. I hadn't noticed because I always use open with, pmusic.
As expected, it also loads the playlist backwards if I click on the m3u after using set run action to associate m3u with pmusic.

I will test in a fresh install. Everything seems fine in Puppy 5.1.1 frugal install.

Thank you for investigating
