Uninstalling PETs that came with Puppy

Okay, I bet there's something obvious that I'm not seeing, but is there any way to uninstall programs that came with Puppy like Inkscape or SeaMonkey for example? I'm running 4.3.1.

I searched around and found something called Pet-Be-Gone, but it seems to be only compatible with Puppy versions less than 4.3.

This isn't really an answer to your problem, but have you considered using a build of 4.31 that has less applications eg Browserlinux?

racie, I never did it, but there is a remaster functionality in the menu.

Err.... I don't want to remaster a live CD, I just want to change the programs I have.

The program in the link above said tested, but not working in 4.3.1.

The applications you want to remove are in the puppy sfs file.
This file is read only.
To remove those programs a remaster can be done, so another puppy sfs is created without these programs.

But I fail to see why you would like to remove those programs.

Oh read only? Rats. I don't have a CD burner on that computer anyway.

There are many programs that come with puppy that are useless to me. If I installed a different browser, which I intend to do, I will likely not need SeaMonkey unless I dislike the other browsers. The small games are of no use to me, and neither is the IRC client, etc. I was just trying to tailor Puppy to my tastes.

As I said, I haven't used the remastering, but it could be that the final result is smaller puppy sfs file and maybe there is no need to burn a new CD.

You might try it, but take your precautions and take a backup of your important stuff before.

But as a matter of facts, you are asking questions without specifying how your puppy is installed. This has always to be reported.

Many answer, but no questions about this...

Why? Why do you want to remove these programs? Are they causing a problem? You won't gain much space by doing so.

Keep in mind that uninstalling programs may result in breaking other packages, by removing libraries and required dependencies.

Your pupsave is probably not suffering from the pre-installed programs.

Note: Beem runs a 32MB pupsave... That is small.

My recommendation, leave the pre-installed packages (as others noted, they sit in the 100MB .sfs file), and install the packages you want to use. If you want them as default, use the built in tools to set them as such.

The smaller the puppy sfs, the less it occupies RAM if I understand well.
But yes it depends on the way the installation is done (pupmode)

So reducing the puppy sfs by removing applications could maybe be of a benefit.

I was tired of hearing this question since petbgone stopped working in woof builds, so I wrote the script to do it (including gui and reverse dependencies) in <400bytes ... still only useful if you plan to remaster or have a full install

In a flash install that option can be selected. I had to manually patch my frugal HDD install to stop it from loading.

I've already stated that I do not use many of the programs that come pre-installed. They become an annoyance as the menu gets larger with each PET I install. Clutter frustrates me.

Have you looked at the folder /usr/share/applications? It contains the .desktop files that define the menus.

Yes, if you just want to remove a program from the menu you can delete its .desktop file, run `fixmenus`, and restart JWM.

Would changing the extension of those files from anything but .desktop also work? Might be better to do that, instead (if it works), just in case racie has a reason to 'restore' those menu entries, someday.

the proper way to allow restoration would be to move them to a separate folder (although there _is_ a way to restore "deleted" files by removing the corresponding .wh (whiteout) prefixed file directly from the pupsave file at its mount point in /initrd/pup_rw ... since the sfs is read only, the files can't _really_ be deleted, so unionfs and aufs use these whiteout files to hide them, which is also what allows us to remaster without the files showing up in the remaster)

the program actually work, it actually delete the program that you ask it too, but it's not perfect yet for example it show xemeraldia.desktop but you will have to type xemeraldia, then the script delete it....

to restart window type restartwm in terminal

Correct, but I think this is on the expense of performance.
