Tahr Pup 6 on desktop, Lucid 3HD on lappie
Latest frugal install of Lupu-511 on another old P3. As mentioned in an earlier post, had an installer error, didn't copy the files to the hdd correctly so I copied them manually.
Everything was working on initial boot.

Emerald windows decorations can be problematic sometimes.... love puppy and i have been playing with it since 232. the only problem i got is when i use compiz. it has been noted before by lobster i think. my windows are stuck / no wobble. there is not an "top bar" with x and minimize etz, ...

yaf-splash
Frugal install on USB with savfile.
Press 'Save' icon on the desktop.
Yelow splash pops up but never disappears unless you click the splash.
Remove /usr/X11R7/bin/yaf-splash. It can not anyway display UTF-8 characters.

Grub4dosconfig help file
@playdayz
I realized Grub4dosconfig help file missing in Lupu-515.
There should be /usr/share/doc/help/C/grub4dosconfig.html.
Well... /usr/share/doc/ is too much shaved?

Is this an instruction to users, or a suggestion to developers?shinobar wrote:Remove /usr/X11R7/bin/yaf-splash. It can not anyway display UTF-8 characters.
Are we users to do this?
I don't think renaming grub4dos to grub is a good idea.
To the knowledgeable ones grub implies grub legacy and would cause confusion. Indeed, before grub2, grub legacy WAS grub.
I am not sure we should rename grub4dos at all. Its creator called it grub4dos and perhaps we should respect that - how would you like it if someone packaged Lucid Puppy and called it GooglePup for instance!
If we must rename it, then puppygrub or grub4pup is perhaps an approach but somewhere it must be clear that grub4pup is grub4dos so that anyone who has problems or needs further info knows what to investigate. If its named grub they will be sent on a false trail investigating grub legacy.

It is an issue of the firstrun.
If you select nl_BE@euro, the firstrun('Personalize Settings' or 'Countrywizard') offers UTF-8 as the default, but the nl_BE@euro.UTF-8 is not supported by libc nor Xlib.
Allowed locales:
- nl_BE
- nl_BE@euro
- nl_BE.UTF-8
Though i recommend nl_BE.UTF-8.

I gave it a real good workover.
The router blinks, winks and sends me all the good vibes.
I can see the hidden network...but no Connectee..
So sadly Lucid gives me nothing on this 4 wireless.
Remarkably both Fluppy versions see no wireless at all.
If anything in Puppy needs working on it is the Network Manager
We need more settings....more consistency.
This is not to take away or rubbish the fine contributions by our
gurus here on the forum.
But wireless is going to get more use and more users.
We are kidding ourselves otherwise.
Sadly....even Windows 7 is easier to get any wireless security working.
We are not talking drivers...but ease of connection.
It used to be crap on XP and Vista.
That's why you needed the free Network Magic....old version.

If you could tweak wireless...it would be the Antz Pantz.

shinobarshinobar wrote:Any applications someone prefer but not built in the distribution have a chance to get them from the PPM or the web.James C wrote:if it's not included those who prefer grub will need to install Lucid and then boot something else to install Grub.
(You need not boot up another distribution.)
As for the legacy grub, you can install ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributio ... untu53.pet.
My question is in what case you need it?
Old version of grub4dos made incorrect entry for Ubuntu, but the recent version of grub4dos has no problem.
I saw no option in that grub4dos menu to install grug4dos to the superblock of the linux partition that puppy is being installed to.
It seems that it’s a matter of wiping out my Windows created MBR or not have puppy bootable in the partition that it was installed to. In my case it would be /dev/sda3.
You see I must have windows control the MBR because I use PLOP boot manager in my windows XP Pro boot.ini so I can boot from the USB ports when needed.
This DELL Lattitude P4 1.8Ghz machine has NO option in the bios to boot from USB anything!
Many older DELL’s have this problem and PLOP handles it quite nicely. Including booting Puppy off a USB stick or even a PCMCIA memory card. PLOP rocks!!
Thumbs DOWN to GRUB4DOS
Re: grub4dos vs. legacy grub
Thanks, glenco.glenco wrote:I saw no option in that grub4dos menu to install grug4dos to the superblock of the linux partition that puppy is being installed to.
Right. The Grub4dos itself can be installed on the superblock of the partition(PBR) but the grub4dosconfig does not support at this point of time.
But still i cannot understand.
In your case, both legecy Grub nor Grub4Dos cannot but only PLOP can, isn't it?
Downloads for Puppy Linux http://shino.pos.to/linux/downloads.html
PLOP and Grub4Dos
Now i see why you need the bootloader on the superblock(PBR).glenco wrote:When I install puppy I install grub to the SUPERBLOCK of the partition that I am installing that version of puppy to. So when I choose PLOP at windows boot menu I get a list of ALL partitions and I choose the partition I want to boot to. From there I get the grub boot menu that was installed to that partition.
Your booting sequence:
ntrldr --> PLOP --> grub
EDIT: in this case i guess you can use syslinux or extlinux instead of grub.
I supposed next sequence, need not PBR:
ntrldr --> Grub4Dos --> PLOP
Anyway i will support PLOP and hopefully PBR install in future release of the Grub4DosConfig.
Thanks glenco for the information.
