Update
Thanks, sc0ttman. Firedog is just what I was looking for.
For your information: when I received an update notification, (it said "update available for Firedog") the partial update could not be applied, so a full update was installed. All of the Puppy branding disappeared, but so far the functions appear to be unchanged.

Re: Update
Yes, the branding is lost, but that's it.. Everything else remains the same..Wognath wrote:when I received an update notification, (it said "update available for Firedog") the partial update could not be applied, so a full update was installed. Replacing Firefox
What is the best method of replacing firefox? Apparently this will upgrsde firedog but I have firefox on my machines at work on high speed but would like to change.
Will the new firedog work on other distros?
Thanks for doing the upgrade, I know it was a lot of work and time invested.
Merry Christmas

Re: Replacing Firefox
The best way would be to remove firefox entirely... After backing up bookmarks, etc..Frank Cox wrote:What is the best method of replacing firefox? Apparently this will upgrsde firedog but I have firefox on my machines at work on high speed but would like to change.

That basically means deleting /usr/lib/firefox and /root/.mozilla
...then install firedog. AND MERRY CHRISTMAS

Re: Replacing Firefox
On my machine at work I deleted ff and installed firedog, no worries.
I tried to get firedog to update on my dialup machine at home-the one I am writing this on. That did not work so I tried to overwroie it and that did not work either. I even went in and started the program from the new firedog desktop in root packages and it still opens the old firedog 2.
Looks like I will have to nuke both of them now and start over. Is it necessary to leave the four libs from seamonkey as with the original firedog? Really looking forward to seeing is there is any noticeable loss of speed, at the office I have cable so its a moot point there.
Thanks again Scott
Wishing you and yours a happy , healthy and prosperous New Year.

You can leave the 4 seamonkey libs, it wont hurt.. (I think... )Frank Cox wrote:On my machine at work I deleted ff and installed firedog, no worries.

Apart from that, I would recommend fully removing firedog and the .mozilla folder before updating..

I'll have a look at Opera, and see what I can find for Firedog on the mozilla addons site...dalderton wrote:One more thing to make it perfect!! The Opera ability to fit the picture to the width of the browser with one click on the bottom of the page.

Re: Replacing Firefox
In case anyone is under the impression that it is now impossible to download youtube videos and other such things in 431 as I have heard it is a piece of cake with FireDog and VLC.
Download Helper is one way : http://www.downloadhelper.net/
Tested it today by downloading a flv file from youtube on dialup and it played perfectly in VLC with no conversion necessary. Sure there are other ways to do it but since I have heard people have gone so far as to switch Distros just for this minor problem, the youtube downloader no longer working , I though it was worth posting,
FireDog works!
If anyone finds a fix for the included downloader please let me know, it does make Puppy seem easier to people unfamiliar with real operating systems. It might be a good idea to preload Download Helper or a similar app in Firedog,

Firedog youtube downloads work (for me at least) using the addon which is installed by default..Frank Cox wrote:In case anyone is under the impression that it is now impossible to download youtube videos and other such things in 431 as I have heard it is a piece of cake with FireDog and VLC.

You Tube -Back Button
I did not notice the youtube downloader already there . Does it work with dialup? Usually when I download from youtube I am at home and on dialup .
No big deal either way the other one works.
What is bothering me in Wary is there is only one direction arrow in FireDog. I can go back and forth but that is all.
MENU <--- or MENU ---> but no <----MENU---->

Re: You Tube -Back Button
Yeah, that's a 'feature' of Firedog - it only shows a back button, if there are pages to go back to, and likewise for the forward button.Frank Cox wrote:I did not notice the youtube downloader already there . Basically, the standard Firefox shows disabled back and forward buttons, but Firedog hides them when they are disabled - just another little trick to add screen space..
Firedog never hides the back or forward buttons if are actually clickable.
This behaviour can be removed by deleting the appropriate entries in userChrome.css (in /root/.mozilla/[your profile]/chrome... I think!)
EDIT: and yes, the youtube downloader should work fine on dialup, but slower , obviously.

Sorry if I bother but isn't already the flv file already in your /tmp folder as Flashxxxx? Why not just renaming? Re: Replacing Firefox
Whether or not the file is present in /tmp depends on the player software used by the website.neurino wrote:Sorry if I bother but isn't already the flv file already in your /tmp folder as Flashxxxx? Why not just renaming? Plus it works with every browser...
It can work, but not on all sites.
Plus the addons sometimes give you access to higher quality videos than the one actually used on the page.
Even mp4s, and I dont like flv video.
But that is a good tip for everyone, thanks.
Incidentally, what do you rename them to? Do you change the extension?

I use this script,
When available on page, if needed, I choose best resolution in player, don't know where addons can find better ones.

Glad you like it! It's my everyday browser, and every time I have to use another, I'm like "Oh man!".... Where's the shortcuts? Why so little screen space? Where this/that feature? Hope it's stable for you as it is for me!harii4 wrote:Firedog is great!
