Please add Qtparted to Puppy
I'd really like this added (replace other existing applications).
It's a great application that can do pretty much everything cfdisk and parted can do. And it fully supports NTFS, which will come in handy for all those moving away from the Windows OSs.

I've created a QTParted PupGet package.
It works in Puppy2, the next snapshot, which has ntfsprogs required to resize
ntfs partitions.
I'm a bit hesitant about releasing it though... it's a bit unstable. Not as fully featured as Gparted either -- what stopped me from using Gparted is the
dependencies -- gtkmm, probably more.
Has anyone used QTParted, got an opinion?
I'm using version 0.4.5.
Incidentally, it was very difficult to compile. Buggy make script -- made me think this was a hint how it is going to be once I got it going.
I had to install 'unsermake' to compile it, which needs Python --- argh! ---
fortunately keenerd came to the rescue with his python .pup.

QTparted was known to be buggy in the past in resizing partitions, I once got overlapping ones, so all content was lost (maybe less than a year ago using knoppix).
People should (just imho) ONLY use it to resize ntfs, if they have a typical Windows-OEM-PC (1 ntfs-partition, nothing else).
But not to resize/alter any other partitions.
To be fair:
I had used other tools in the past like Mandrakes (9.x) grafical Diskdruid, so maybe my problems were caused by this.
Since then I only use parted, which is available as a Dotpup, but cannot resize ntfs.

the command line parted should be able to everything that qtparted can do, and probably more ... the latest version is 1.6.25.1 ... i have a parted 1.6.19 dotpup package on my dotpups page (i have not tested it, but it has been downloaded a number of times, and no one has complained, yet)
there's a bootable cd that runs a gui for parted ... the iso is only 3 or 4 megs ... http://partitionlogic.org.uk/ ... there's also a floppy version

I used QTParted from Knoppix regularly when I was a Linux newbie trying distributions and adding and moving partitions around.BarryK wrote:Has anyone used QTParted, got an opinion?
Later I found that parted was even better as sometimes QTParted had somethings grayed out that should have been enabled. I always found that QTParted erred on the safety side. I never allowed doing something I shouldn't do. It never corrupted my partition table or HDD.
Bottom line: I think that new users prefer a GUI, QTParted is quite intuitive and the bugs are mere anoyances. On the other hand I think that any experienced user would use parted instead.

The big problem is that parted does not do ntfs, and the ntfsresize utility is
(so I have read) rather complicated to use directly.
A complication is that QTParted does not seem to use all the functionality of
parted, for example cannot resize FAT partitions. But QTParted can resize
ntfs partitions by using ntfsresize.
(edit: of maybe it can resize FAT partitions: the website says it can't, but the
page was last update in 2003 whereas the last release was dated 2004 -- it seems the project was dead but the Ark Linux people did the 2004 release, but the
website hasn't been updated)
The next snapshot of puppy2 will have ntfsresize, ntfsmount and mkntfs, and
the libparted.so from parted package -- maybe should throw in the parted
executables also?
QTParted is huge (580K) ...really, someone, using one of our gui-capable languages
could knock up a nice app just like QTParted but a fraction of the size...
we've will have all the commandline tools:
parted, e2fsprogs, ntfsprogs, fdisk, cfdisk, disktype
...the only thing missing is reiserfsprogs.

I think it would be great if someone would manage to produce a nice application just like QTParted which would be a fraction of its size. I think a GUI will help a lot of new members (like myself) install and maybe even fully convert to Puppy.
I've never tried it, but how does http://gparted.sourceforge.net/features.php compare to QTParted?

I've never used QTparted, however I do use gparted. I like it, quite intuitive and it has never bitten me. Being an iso and therefore standalone helps. You are not messing about with a working system. My previous gui partitioning program was PartitionMagic and gparted compares well.
Partitioning is definitely a project where I like the gui approach - 'a picture is worth a thousand words (or numbers)'.

Gparted in Puppy2
Gparted works in Puppy2 for resizing NTFS partition - just make sure you defragment the NTFS from inside Windows, surface-scan the drive (which it will do after a reboot), do a normal shutdown, then finally load Puppy2 and run Gparted to resize the NTFS partition. See this or search this forum for instructions in partitioning the free space with cfdisk.
Gparted refreshes itself so it is possible to create the new Puppy partitions in Gparted. I chose to use cfdisk in console as my 128 MB test PC is very low in free space (6 MB).

Good advice Raffy - I used Qparted - a great program - to resize Vista beta 2 without a defrag - well it was a new install and it fried Windows Vista.
. . . actually I am quite glad it was like a sloth on poisonous crap . . . a distro that big and with that much noise and so little usable software - and they expect a lease or rental agreement to use it. Pah!
Remember. Stay frisky.

Partitioning
I like QTParted, but my favourite partitioning software is Partition Commander 9,01 with Partition Magic Pro 8.05 a close second.
Both can be found as freeware packages, a decent search Engine should find them for you.

I looked at partitioning apps. in general for setting up HD & USB drives.
Most ISOs are 30 MB for the GUI versions, I didn't find a smaller one.
I have a 64 MB USB with DOS & Partition Magic (DOS) on it that's great.
I think the Puppy community should offer a "drive setup / rescue" USB.
The smaller the better for the dialup folks, 30 MB is way too big.
I think 5 MB to 10 MB should be enough for this.
It should do: partitions, SysLinux & Grub, & anti virus (maybe other stuff).
If someone knows or finds one... Let us know!
Short of that, I'll make a GTK GUI if a CLI only one is found.
