Ram memory more than 2GB - puppy 5.20

#1 Post by kostas801 »

I have a intel core 2 computer with 4gb of ram.
I have installed the puppy 5.20 (frugal) but
it recognizes only the 2gb of ram.

Does anybody know what do i have to do in order the
puppy to recognize and the rest of the ram (4gb in total)

Thanks

Are you sure it's only recognizing 2GB of the RAM? Open a terminal (using rxvt, or whatever other terminal program you might prefer), and enter "free" (without the quotes). That should give you a listing of the memory usage (actual and swap, if you have a swap file/partition active).

If you're using the indicator in the taskbar as a reference to how much RAM you have available, it's only a reference to the RAM when you're running as a LiveCD/from RAM only. If you're running from a frugal setup, it shows how much space you have free in your pupsave file. Full setups should show the free space on the drive, I believe.

Note that with 32-bit OSes, there is generally a limitation to how much RAM they can 'see' and use - but that limit's closer to 3.5 GB.

I also have 4 GB of RAM, yet, though the BIOS reports the correct amount, both Linux and Windows report that there is only about 3.3 GB total RAM.
Puppy 5.2 uses a 32 bit kernel. This means the kernel can theoretically address, and therefore should be able to "see," 2^32 or a little more than 4 GB of memory (RAM). For some reason that's never been clear to me, apparently neither 32 bit Linux or 32 bit Windows can actually "see" more than about 3.3 GB of RAM.

Kostas,

If you're only seeing 2 gig from a 4 gig setup, the simplest answer might be that a ram stick is not recognised, possibly faulty. Does it show up in the bios as 2 or 4?

When you get that sorted out, Fatdog64 uses a 64-bit kernel, so it can "see" and use all your RAM. I tried it from a CD in my computer and it reported the correct amount of RAM.
