I vote for non-UTF-8. My main reasoning is that my family and I have a very diverse range of computers running several different operating systems including various versions of RISC OS, Windows 98SE, Windows XP and of course Lupu and Luci. Not all of these have UTF-8 support. It's very easy for anyone who does want UTF-8 to enable it, but if it is made a default anyone who isn't aware of what it means could potentially be caught out.playdayz wrote:Who has an opinion? Whichever will do best at not messing up non-ASCII characters that are supposed to be displayed correctly in ISO Latin-1 encoding. I, for one, haven't noticed any problem with display of these non-ASCII characters in Puppy 5.2.playdayz wrote:Who has an opinion? Should Lucid Puppy 5.2.1 default to UTF-8 or non-UTF-8? Thanks.
It's stupid to use inferior software for ideological reasons.

that USB device ID is not currently supported by any of the Ralink wifi drivers,
but I have just sent you a PM with a download link to a version of the rt3070sta driver which has been modified to support that ID.

10.3 beta of flash that I mentioned previously
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 759#505759
does not seem to be any more capable in terms of running flash video
than other recent examples (on my machine)
However it does directly access a control panel
I tried to use the control panel so I could use chatroulette.com
and unleash my insanity on an
unsuspecting networld.
Basically with Flash, even a short video if finished
but the tab left open will bring down the browser
needing a restart of X
What can I do? I need flash, Adobe can not provide [shrug]
They are hobbling my browser. Oh boy.
Back to chatroulette . . . No luck. World is safe (usual madmen still in charge)
I used recordmydesktop (ppm) and ffconvert
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 81&t=54056
to create a simple tip for mtpaint
http://youtu.be/pizQJNvhuJ0
I am sure you guys can do better.
Every time I use transmission (ppm) I end up with a red bar (personal storage file)
xchat in ppm worked OK - connecting to Puppy IRC
The crystal ATI graphics used to put up control panel - no longer
Is it still there? Need to run SecondLife (which requires it) to check out . . .
Day to day running seems fine

thankyou for your effort in all this. I have installed the package and will let you know how i get on. I will post the results in your thread, after a few days of testing. I really appreciate you taking the time to try and solve this problem.

This is the forth time i've gotten this error. three times in 256 and once in 255 trying to replicate it. It seems related to the fact that i've got transmission set to autostart at startup, and it's download folder is on my ntfs drive. I can't remember the first time, but subsequent times the error has occurred immediately after boot when i try to access the drive. Also once this has happened, the drive remains read only after rebooting on that particular savefile.. Any idea why this is happening? AndHow can i set it back to read/write?
the drive is about 4months old sata500gb. also i've tried to replicate the error on 520 and haven't as of yet. Nor in the months of using it did i have that error.

Update from 254 to 256 using PUI appeared to go smoothly, but reboot gave "improper shutdown (it wasn't) sorry can only do fscheck of ext2/3/4 (it's an ext2). Rebooting." - it doesn't, but carries on "Making the FS usable."
Prompt.
Trying an fsck on dev/sda1 claims "possibly non-existent device"
Manually enter 'reboot' then does a double take, entering its own reboot command before showing some garbage about X, then 30s later, starts up correctly.
Non-US citizens need to have your comprehensive start-up panel after upgrade.
Retrovol off again after upgrade.
Leaves me with the old wallpaper. Where's 'guy-on-a-bike'? Still my favourite.
Amusing!
Otherwise, quite brilliant. Why some folks bother with the mega-bloats still emerging on DW defies belief. Almost as tiresome as the go-faster kiddies around here who waste their dosh on megaMb, multi-cores, and wi-fi. Oh yes, we had an hardened hacker on TV recently who demonstrated breaking into an encrypted wireless network in <5s, If I were a bank manager (apart from living in Tortola!) I'd refuse refunds to anyone using wi-fi. Lift the damn floorboards and wire up the network. Would also save a lot of intellectual effort and memory real estate trying to accommodate every nuance the leveraging industry keeps throwing out.

I have just installed the video driver as suggested in quickpet now Skype video works fine. See attached graphic. I am running live and have not created a savefile yet.

You need to mount the partition before it's used. Install startmount from Quickpet>More Pets to accomplish that for you.666philb wrote:This is the forth time i've gotten this error. three times in 256 and once in 255 trying to replicate it. hi jim1911, i do use startmount, i'm supposing that transmission must have tried to access the partition before startmount had mounted it. The problem is though, now that the errors occurred, the partition has remained read only, on successive reboots. Any idea how to change it back to read/write?Jim1911 wrote:You need to mount the partition before it's used. My Inspiron 1100 with Intel 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE (rev 03) chipset has had significant black screen problems since lupu 500 on reboots or basically any X restart, even attempting to make a save file. Luci 256 appears to be a distinct improvement, only one failure in perhaps 20 boots. Fresh boot (frugal), run xorgwizard, it picks "intel" driver. Rerwin's efforts, I assume, so special thanks to him for this improvement as well the many contributors.
Not a new bug: smbclient works fine for me despite giving multiple warning init_iconv messages as posted in
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... &start=280 and more recently in a Lucid Puppy 5.2 thread
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... &start=247
with rcrsn51's cure, a missing file, explained and supplied as a pet here,
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... &start=283. Using his pet fixed it for me in luci 256. Shouldn't the file should be included by default?

wow can it know such things? I mean the Chrome is just a program, how do they check it out? Do they mention it on their forum or something, a work around or so.chrismt wrote:Just noticed
Google Chrome will not work in Puppy as it will not run as root anymore atleast this is there in the dev version i tested
I am not sure if any puppian found a work around it
Ah the Dev version of Crome. How different is teh Chromium version then. Does that have a Dev version too. is it less resourceful maybe?
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Thanks for reporting on your black screen problems. I am a little concerned that you experienced even one black screen. Do you recall what the situation was that time? Just to be sure that the "modeset" rule is responsible for your success, could you run the command:JonT wrote:My Inspiron 1100 with Intel 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE (rev 03) chipset has had significant black screen problems since lupu 500 on reboots or basically any X restart, even attempting to make a save file. grep '0x2562' /tmp/udevtrace.log
and post/send the output from that. I want to verify that the info is the same as mine. Note that the modeset is in effect only during bootup, since it affects only the startup of the driver. I do not expect the driver to get loaded again later, so the modeset is not needed after first use.
If you see any further black screen related to starting up the driver, please tell me about it. Thanks.
Richard
Richard, per your request in the post just above, cut-and-pasted:
Xorg_High-1.1-Lucid.pet is installed. Hardinfo reports 636 MB and version A32 bios. I'm using legacy grub with no modeset nor acpi options, though I've fiddled around with them.
I can't give you much to work with. Sadly, I know no way to make the problem come-and-go, despite looking. One poor hint - a reboot is more likely to fail than first boot - I wonder (without further reason) if it is a temperature effect, possibly a critical timing issue - just conjecture. For comparsion, Wary and 214X (i810 driver vs Intel with Luci) have never failed.
A few more black screens have happened for me today with luci-256, atypically rebooting often for testing; however, something is better.
Luci-256 is also better for me for restarting X as required after some installations. It hasn't failed yet. Losing some long downloads was bothersome.
ctrl-alt-backspace doesn't help, even with some blind xwin's; ctrl-alt-delete does reboot.
I appreciate your efforts and attention; however I don't feel that this is a puppy issue, but a kernel issue and you shouldn't beat yourselves up too much over it. If I can supply anything, let me know.
