Multilingual support on Puppy Linux 4.x/5.x
Re: conflict with pre-installed Chinese support?
recommmended to use lang-support-all with native puppy/pupplet.
boot up with 'pfix=ram' option and make new pupsave, then apply lang-support-all-*.sfs.

Icewm has NLS files, and Firefox has NLS at the main site, and Language plugins so as far as I see that is not a big problem.. maybe though Icewm doesn't support CJK, not sure.
Cheers

1. Install any of Puppy/pupplets 4.x/5.x with default settings(keyboard:us, locale:en-US).Bickz wrote:I'm a relative puppy noob, but i cannot apply the .sfs file as the opening post suggests, i'm dying to get puppy translated in dutch through this solution but i don't know what to do.
2. Apply lang_support_all-*.sfs.
3. Countrywizard from menu or run /usr/sbin/countrywizard to change the language.
Add SFS File to Bootup(Puppy Linux FAQ) may help.
If you do not consist on some puppy, try the Lucid Puppy Quckset editon(LupQ), the Release candidate for now.
You need not lang_support_all with LupQ. The dutch language pack lang_pack_nl-lupq-0.1.pet, apply against only LupQ, is available. I made it today!

I like this package. Used it to localize wary into Russian. Found the problem. It switches time to few hours. The problem is in /etc/rc.country - replaced it with the original but changed one line to except UTF-8 from SFS's rc.country. It changes console font while booting but does not change time. Cannot use Lupu. It's too heavy for my old PC and it hangs up on another one when I put in USB-flash or modem.

I am currently using lucid puppy.
since I am using scim to key-in Japanese, I installed these pets in the system:
1.scim-1.4.9.pup4.4.2.2.1.pet
2.scim-anthy-1.2.7.pup4.4.2.2.1.pet
3.scim-bridge-0.4.16-pup4.pet
4.anthy-9100h.patch13Bptn23/2009527.1.pet
The scim is working fine with these pets installed.
But I also want to have another language input, which is the chinese.
So, I went to www.scim-im.org and downloaded an archive named scim-pinyin-0.5.91.tar.gz
that claims to be able the user to use pinyin to input the chinese.
Since this is not a pet file, how I am going to let my puppy recognize the files inside the archive? For example, where should I extract the folder to? And what are the steps after the extraction? Or I am still lack of some other files to complete my installation?
Please help.

Spanish language pack doesn't work
Hi, just wanted to say I tried the Spanish language pack, langpack_es, both the version for LupQ and for Wary5, in Lucid Puppy 5.11 and didn't work. I don't want to switch to LupQ just because of a language pack, so first, if there's a language pack for LP511 I want to try it. At least a language pack for the menu and for ROX filler, since they're the only things I can still see in English when I try to switch LP511 to Spanish without language pack.

All I want is the ability to correctly input Chinese, Russian, German, French, and Spanish text with Seamonkey or Firefox, or some other browser supported by Puppy 5.2.8. For all but Chinese, a simple on-screen keyboard would probably do. For Chinese, I'd prefer to be able to write simplified or traditional characters using a pen tablet or a pen mouse (in which I have considerable past practice), as I suspect keyboard methods would come with a high learning curve.

install lang_pack-0.9.sfs to puppy full install
Hi shinobar,
again I appreciate this lang_pack.sfs.
In order to remaster a custom french Slacko53 version, I got a full install of it.
Keeping the us locale settings, I installed the lang_pack-0.9.sfs using a sfs installer (thanks to Dejan555 forum member).
After doing Menu/.../Countrywizard and choice to fr_BE, the main menu was still english even after redoing restart jwm.
I tried to manualy do:
Then the shutdown menu went translated. But sub-menus are not.
I got the same warning when making a pet from lang_pack-0.9.sfs and installing it in a frugall puppy install.
It seems that in both cases not using lang_pack-0.9.sfs in a sfs install process causes a script not to recognize the lang_pack as a sfs. And then brings the warning message.
So my question: how to modify that script to allow whether the lang_pack install from a pet, or from a sfs-installer use?
Thanks for any advice

As for the menu, extract /usr/share/desktop-directories from the lang_pack-0.9.sfs and manually copy all the stuff in the directory to the corresponding directory, /usr/share/desktop-directories.
Well, i am not sure but i suppose, you can also remaster from flugal install.

I noticed that some Spanish translations were incomplete, missing or had spelling mistakes. I'm checking some existing translations and making new ones, I'll post them here so that you can use them in a newer version of the language pack or when you release a new QuickSet Puppy. How about Racy-Q and Slacko-Q?

After two years of running Lucid Puppy 525 I've finally gotten round to building my first Precise Puppy (561). It looks very smart. I'm almost disconcerted.
But after the basic set-up and tweaking for personal preferences I came to the issue which caused me more problems than any other when I was a newbie struggling with lupu 520/525.
Could I get a Japanese IME up and running on Precise Puppy 561? Fortunately the answer was yes. It's easy once you know how. A couple of sessions with a well known search engine provided me with the name of the file needed and a location where it could be downloaded.
The Japanese language pack for Precise Puppy is lang_pack_ja-1.5b.sfs and it's available here.
But it's not available in the official ibiblio repository. I wonder why? This latest language pack is a good. I works 'out of the box'. Install the sfs, tweak the SCIM settings for your personal preferences (it will work on defaults), reboot Puppy and start typing.
New versions of the Japanese language pack are announced at the japanese forum but (unless I'm even worse at searching this form than I already think I am) they don't seem to be announced here. By making this post I bumping this thread for the first time in two years.
It seems to me that the support Puppy Linux offers to people who need to type in non-latin languages is fragmented. Each language seems to be approached on an ad hoc basis. The issues of 'non-latin input' and 'localisation' appear to have been jumbled together.
I am an English speaker. I don't need anything localised. But I do, on occasions, want to type nihongo script into my PC.
When I look at the official repository I don't see a pet for SCIM. Nor do see pets for the major non-latin scripts (anthy, hangul, pinyin, tamil, hindi etc.).
SCIM isn't particulary large. I would happy to see SCIM included as a standard component of Puppy. Then it would be up to the user to simply add in whatever scripts they need. That way adding support for non-latin input would be divorced from the issue of localisation.
Shinobar-san, if you happen to read this post, I have a question: While looking at your repository I noticed that four days after you first posted the current ja-1.5b language pack you added a pet called lang_pack_ja-precise-fix-20120516.pet. The question is 'what is being fixed and who needs to install this'?
