ye olde ibm doesn't like lucid pup

#1 Post by kevroxldn »

Hi all,

I have exhausted every avenue i know, (being a noob, there's not enough to make up a small village) but i really need help with lupu-525.

I manged to burn it to cd and usb, installed it on my sons eeepc 2g surf
via the usb, no probs, works brilliantly, wi-fi, skype, etc..

The fun began when trying to install it on my ancient ibm iseries 1161 (4g hdd 160Mb). The bios doesn't boot from usb so i burnt a cd and all looked good until x tried to begin. Thought it might be lack of ram so tried...

puppy pfix=nocopy

to avoid ram probs but still the same thing. Tried...

puppy vga=normal

still no luck, just a black screen, cd stops and it just hangs there.
Burnt a DSL disk, that works! Need serious knowledge of linux to get it to do anything though i.e wifi, far beyond me at the mo, so would love help with with the puppy side of things.

Many thanks to anyone who can shed some light

Try a Wary version.
Wary is designed for older equipment.
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

Lighthouse pup is that one not based on Puppy421 so maybe that one work. A very modern Puppy with lots of features like SFS loading and wine and so on
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

woohoo! wary runs fine, thanx all. wifi up n running, no probs, just about to attempt to use gparted to resize the hdd (currently 4.66 gb resizing to 3700 and 1069gb) will this kill off win Me (if it was ever really alive)? trying to work towards a dual boot, is this the right way or is there something simpler??
thanx

In any case, with 160MB ram you need a swap file/partition.
RAM plus swap should be 512MB.

a tip...IBM offer four different series of drivers for an 1161.....so more details may help.....

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... L4NTP.html

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4TGPNJ

I have several IBM lappy's 560/570/T21 and find 'old faithful' 214R, or ttuuxxx's upgrade of it, 214X to work on all of them.....though it sounds like you have got it running ok now

2nd tip....if you can...upgrade the hard drive to a later faster 5400/7200rpm EIDE type ....30/40 gig are very cheap now - full install is generally faster in low ram machines, and even faster if drive is updated

Max memory should be 192mb [64+128]

thanks for the advice, i manged to get it all sorted, although i was hoping for it to run a little faster than winMe, seems about the same speed, slower on the web. i dont suppose i can expect miracles from it though, the rams maxed out (32 up to 160) and the pcmcia card is used for wifi so theres not much more can be done to the poor fella! if i get really brave i might try DSL but i'm not sure how easy it will be to configure compared to warypup. it works for now though, just gotta top it up with water to keep the steam power going!
thanx again

browser speed....try Opera/Swiftfox/Firepup (based on firefox 1.5/tweaked by ttuuxxx)

All beat seamonkey hands down, IMO

http://www.getswiftfox.com/

http://puppy2.org/downloads/FirePup-0.04.3.1.pet

PS: I added USB2/pmcia adapter [with power lead from USB1 socket] to my 560/570s.....improves flashdrives/external CD/DVD burner by a mile, and allows greater wifi choice  .....and I think Puppy (214R) was faster than my W98SE.....horses for courses though..

If you want really fast browsing just use Dillo that’s included in Wary. It has many, many shortcomings but slowness is not one of them. It’ll bark and woof and run circles around bloated Opera, SeaMonkey, Firefox, Chrome etc. I use it routinely for some sites especially some news and weather sites. It renders most of those quite well. With a little work, it can be tweaked up some in /etc/dillo/dillorc to look and perform a bit more like the bloated browsers.

Actually, he may need Retro versions of 4.31, 4.21, 4.12 -- these provide better hardware support for older machines.

Given the skimpy 160 MB RAM, I'd lean towards the 4.12 or 4.12 Retro (I ran the Retro on a 333 MHz Compaq Armada, with 128 MB RAM).

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... uppylinux/

Or as suggested above, Wary:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... ary-5.1.1/

The above mentioned laptop is currently running 256MB, 512MB swap, and 4.3.1 Retro, but is rather "doggy"... I'm probably going to roll it back to an earlier version, or test ttuuxxx's top7:

http://www.smokey01.com/ttuuxxx/2.14X/iso-sfs/

Also, if you get a system up, either add a swap file (see my sig), or resize the partition (via gparted) and add a swap partition. I would add at least 512MB swap space.

And there is always the possibility that these won't run on an IBM laptop (laptops sometimes cause issues).

I had issue with my IBM A22 too, but found a solution:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 61&t=64482

If you just want to know what I ultimately did:

I downloaded

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... modems.iso

Burned using Nero with an 8x CD burn speed.

Defaults it just hanges.

Using the acpi=off option works.

For someone who is new and reading this.

1) The computer boots with CD.

2) I press the F2 key

3) keyed in :
puppy acpi=off

4) press the enter key

5) I now have puppy running on an IBM A22m with out a hard drive.

I tried to use a 4GB Sony microvalut USB (got for Xmas) and would not work (just frozen at boot). However I used my old 2GB Sony microvault USB and works like a charm.
