Troubles installing puppy in a VERY old computer.

Hi,puppies!

I was wondering if it'd be possible to install Puppy Linux directly from the Shell, since my computer hasn't enough RAM even to execute the GUI.

I would really appreciate any help, since this is my first time with this kind of Operating Systems.

You can run a frugal install without X, however I don't think you can do a full install.

Or if you look around the forum, I remember seeing a minimal puplet somebody made without Xorg.

I found this computer in the trash can some weeks ago, and I fell in love with it.

Hp Vectra 500

HD: 4gb
RAM:32 mb (I am trying to expand it a little, but I can't find SIMM cards anywhere!)
It was running Windows 98 SE, but now it doesn't seem to boot.

I know you will tell me I should try some pupplet, but the thing is that a friend of my gave me his puppy linux cd to try,and I really liked it.

I want this computer to run both on MS-DOS(to play old games) and linux.

I am asking for too much?

Is it really series 525 or did we guess at that. If so the memory for this seems to be a little high. It would take you 32 per bank, or $64 to bring you up to 128.

I just paid $11 to upgrade my old dog with 128MB. So I think this price is high, but it does show that the memory is availabe.

If you need GUI, an old RedHat version, maybe 7.3

Oh, thanks for searching.... The thing is that I'm in Argentina, more exactly in Buenos Aires. And the fact that I don't have a job at the moment doesn't help at all.

I asked a few friends if they had old memories in their homes, but I wasn't any lucky.

We still don't know which version you are attempting to install.

I've run 3.x versions on that type of hardware so it can work.

This is what I would try.
Download and burn gparted. http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php Use it to create a swap partition 512mb to 1024mb. I'd go with the 1024mb myself. This will allow puppy to have somewhere to open to besides ram. Don't make a partition to install puppy to. Use the puppy cd to make the next partition.

Do a "full" installation to the rest of the hard drive. This means puppy wont have to run all in ram or swap. I've done many installs this way on similar hardware with no problems, 3x puppies that is. Little slow but it works.

The newer puppies may not have the drivers for your hardware, the kernels drop support for some older gear. It only takes a few minutes to do an install so try it anyway. While you are at your friends place download a 3x version and a 2x version. You can try them all to see what works and you will only have about an hour invested. Less than a Windows + updates install.

Edit: no matter which install you try frugal or full do the swap partition first.

OP might be able to chase up a laptop identical for parts. A 32 MB laptop like that would be going for a song. Who would be hanging onto something with only 32 MB of ram? People would be pleased to get rid of it.

had the same prob (gparted didn't work either) with 32 megs ram but 64 worked, this with 2-3x vers of pup

lowest cpu was 150MHz, dunno about 133 if that's what you have
