I made and use a persistent image file with 6.4.3. The file must be named knoppix-data.img and it goes in the boot KNOPPIX folder. It doesn't work nearly as well as Puppy's pupsave system since it mostly just saves preferences and configurations but it can also save boot and startup scripts.

Hey Bernie_by_the_Sea thanks for the info. You make it so easy and have no ideal how long I spent on Knoppix forum trying to get that answer and didn't.

A follow up question, is it worthwhile running toram from a usb stick (following the same reasoning in your answer)?

nooby - There is definitely something going wrong with your testing of antiX frugal(ish) in editing as root. It does work. I use antiX on a frugal(ish) install on ext4 partition (I refuse to set up ntfs to test out of principle :) ) and it works fairly well.
Puppy is by far the best for running frugal, Knoppix is very good as well, and we are working on making antiX 'frugal-friendly'. We are not quite there yet, but it might be ready for prime-time in a week or so.
However successful we are at antiX in getting our frugal working, Puppy is still the master IMO. A 120MB full distro compared to our 680MB version, it is obvious which will run better toram and/or frugal.
Anti, thanks for not giving up on me. I think my Acer D250 use some kind of pseudo scsi RAID something because how it list isosrc as the place where I am. While others have CDROM or SDA there or something.

Or the fact that you use Ext4 formatting can be a reason it works for you. Maybe the ntfs-3g set up is to protect that partition?

I did my best to do as I was instructed. But sure I am not a good reader but I did copy what I did so from that one should be able to see iif I did anything wrong.

Here's a document that I personally use with Knoppix. I have tested it recently for validity, but it use to work.

Here's what it did.
  1. allow successful booting on a system I was testing
  2. allow me to overcome the Knoppix userID problem where you're constantly plagued by rights issues. It, instead, allow the desktop to login as root user. And have user rights.
  3. at that point, i was able to install selected package, unencumbered.
Please let me know if you have additional information or updates to that document.
Hope it helps.

gcmartin,

thanks, will most likely test it and get back to you if I fail to grasp the text.

But dare I ask you. This was back when Knoppix had version 5 or before version 6.2 or something. I don't really use knoppix due to me too confused and computer challenged but it was the Linux that had least restrictions when I tested it apart from Puppy. Porteus allowing me to be root also was rather forgiving while I personally fail to use AntiX but none else have that problem that I have.

So maybe Knopper did something to Knoppix after version 6.2 or a bit earlier that made it more user friendly?

You only asked Mr. Martin but I'll express my opinion anyway. The CD version got less user friendly starting with 6 because more and different things were left out.

I'm playing with the info in that document file but most I can't use -- no LAN for one thing -- but I had never gotten to root login that way. I did it the hard way starting at run level 2 and fiddling around on the command line. In Knoppix (and Debian) I'm still not sure running as root is any better than su/sudo. It has both advantages and disadvantages (but security is not one of them).

Yes, V5 to v6 to today is a dramatic change in desktop behavior. For a CD version, I liked the old way...but, that maybe the side of me (human) that hates change.

Anyway, if I remember correctly,Mr. Knopper is s University Professor. The Knoppix project may be a part of his University curriculum. And, I have never seen a project paper anywhere which describes "why" he made the desktop changes we see in the Live system.

If you find a link by him articulating what and why, I be interested.

Still, though, it can be a very useful system running Live from CD/DVD. It is the MOST feature rich Live media system. I have used it as a Disaster Recovery (DR) tool, as well as a production system for integration tests. It talks to SCSIs/SATA/SAS/RAID and it will allow maintenance of LVMs. This isjust a few things that Puppy doesn't do. I grew up, so to speak, on this staple...Knoppix. And, I have a DR strategy that I employ where on a critical system, I create the base DR using Knoppix (both Windows and Linux), and test; the Knoppix and 6 lines of instructions is secured to the side of the server. Disk failure or MB failure, grab the disk on side of machine, boot, restore and user is back in business.

Knoppix can be very useful.

i use Puppy in Desktop systems and am happy with its ability to run Live as well. But, it should NOT be compare with Knoppix. These are TOTALLY different animals.

Now, that Puppy has expanded to embrace all RAM on a PC, some Puppy developers MAY decide (since so much memory is unused in the running system) to build in the SCSI/SAS/RAID and LVM2 needs so that it CAN be used "Out of the Box" on systems which have user data stored in those media. Today, I have NOT found a PUP, yet, that is embracing this with these, built-in. But, we may see some shortly, because, I'm sure others are seeing all this available RAM too. And, don't misunderstand me, I DO understand why these are not prebuilt in Puppy, today.

But, Puppy, for what it does, it does it very well on lean RAM requirements.
And, Knoppix, for what it does, it too, does it very well on Robust RAM systems. If most of us had 4-8GB RAM systems, so many more of us would be running this in RAM from Live media.

Hope this helps

Klaus does teach at the university level but maybe part-time -- his rank is visiting professor which definitely means no tenure. I think his primary profession and most of his income is from being a self-employed IT consultant. He was a member of a UNIX club in college and Knoppix grew out of that.

Thanks to all who contribute to this thread.

I use this one
ADRIANE-KNOPPIX_V6.4.3CD-2010-12-20-EN.iso

As is obvious that is his tribute to his wife and it has special aid programs that talk in it so she more easier would know what she activates. It talks to her.

I don't need that so maybe I should make use of one of the other isos on the mirror servers?

What I don't like is this "Bling Blign things with things going up in smoke to brittle and explode like Glass? ice or windows falling into pieces when one shut down programs. Yes impressive but it feels annoying after a while.

So which of the many 6.4.4 does you guy's recommend for frugal install on NTFS.

I use this menu.lst code now.

title Knoppix 6.4.3 Adriane (Poor Man's HD install)
kernel (hd0,2)/knoppixboot/isolinux/linux knoppix screen=1024x768 BOOT_IMAGE=knoppix
initrd (hd0,2)/knoppixboot/isolinux/minirt.gz

Do I need to add these things they did mention in some wiki or FAQ?

ramdisk_size=1000000 init=/etc/init apm=power-off nomce

The reamdisk maybe I get what it does but what does init take care of and the nomce is that important? I may have asked this before. Sorry

Read somewhere ADRIANE option is built in to all versions of Knoppix and in those with ADRIANE-KNOPPIX tittles Adriane loads on bootup.

Have used 6.43 dvd, 6.44dvd, and with all upgrades 6.44 Klaus posted it equates to 6.5.

Every little bling in Knoppix is user defined by logging in console with "su -" > gnome control-center. This is the Debian menu control center which has option not available from menu>system or menu>control IIRC. It really is hard to find if your only looking via menus and don't know to call it up via console.

And if your logged in as root, hope someone posts the above script for single user stand alone box, do the installed menus gui menus change?

Some add on docks like AWN have a Debian menu option which is worth it alone for me to have the dock. It reorganizes programs into useful categories

Poor man's install seems should work the same as my hard drive install by logging into console with "su -" then calling up your install program, I use aptitude, then you have full root privileges and I can install upgrade delete any program.

Thanks Jim,

I should test more. I hate when I fail at things and Knoppix is almost a regular standard linux distro and I usually always fail to use them so me chicken scared to boot them up. Takes too long time licking the wounds after a total disaster like the one I had with AntiX and every one told me it works for them and it fails for me. Not easy to accept there is something very wrong with my brain. All of us want to be normal like everybody else :)

:D Hello,
All of us want to be normal like everybody else.
Heavens no, I do not....
Normal is boring...
Embrace your differences, they are what make you...you....
If I wanted to be like "everyone else", I`d probably still be swearing at windoze...

Back OT, how does one add ndiswrapper to Knoppix???
Can I remotely D/L a .deb and install it??
No net = not using Knoppix much...
Except to show off Compiz-Fusion...

This iso ADRIANE-KNOPPIX_V6.4.3CD-2010-12-20-EN.iso works better on my computer than the other one I tested the KNOPPIX_V6.4.4CD-2011-01-30-EN.iso

I guess it could have to do with him using that older one for the Linux Magazine and wanted to give us a gift. or could it be that I managed to download and install Flashplayer by myself? Maybe I did because the more recent iso did not have flash.

Then I must have activated the save file because despite being a live CD iso it does remember my changes.

Hm one bad thing is that I fail to get how to test both after each other without first hiding the knoppix directory for the other version. It uses the same name in both and seem to not find it inside a directory. like if one do this

title Knoppix 6.4.3 Adriane (Poor Man's HD install)
kernel (hd0,2)/knoppixadriane/boot/isolinux/linux BOOT_IMAGE=KNOPPIX knoppix xkeyboard=se apm=power-off screen=1024x768 nomce
initrd (hd0,2)/knoppixadriane/boot/isolinux/minirt.gz

title Knoppix 6.4.4 (Poor Man's HD install) apm=power-off nomce ramdisk_size=1000000 init=/etc/init
kernel (hd0,2)/knoppix644/boot/isolinux/linux BOOT_IMAGE=KNOPPIX knoppix xkeyboard=se screen=1024x768
initrd (hd0,2)/knoppix644/boot/isolinux/minirt.gz

BOOT_IMAGE=KNOPPIX same for both so that does not work and it does not accept that one rename it either and if one put it inside the directory it boot from then it fail to find the dir.

So how should one solve that collusion

PuppyLuvr I rather be normal that this confused :)

Internet worked instantly for me and how to install thing sI have no idea. I did manage to install flash so I must have been taught by somebody kind enough to care about me.

Search and you will find it maybe? Unless it wa a PM that got deleted

:D Hello,
Well, I got ndiswrapper installed...
installed the .deb from the PPM.. 8)

sudo dpkg blah blah blah....

sudo ndiswrapper blah blah....
rt2860 installed...
Device 1860:5390 present...

But it wont modprobe...
Also warns me that /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper doesnt have a .conf so it will be ignored in next release...
But /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper doesnt exist.... :x

And the wireless utility, needless to say, cant see it yet...
More fun ahead...sudo this and sudo that...LOL...
Just for fun, I have not yet reset the KB from DE to EN...Makes you watch what you type.... :)
Strangely, it believes it is running from a USB, and urges me not to remove it while running...LOL...but it boots from / saves to my /home partition just fine.... :D

EDIT: Oh yes, I remember...It refused to see sda4 so I told it to install to usb, and pointed grub at sda4, made a save to sda4, and rebooted...Hey, it worked... 8)
OTOH, it does save personal settings, so...

Hey nooby, I'm retired and spent months learning the little I know about knoppix. Retired and plenty of time is all it takes. Well....insomnia helps a little.

Knoppix is a bitch and remains a bitch not just because of the built in "protection" It's not just running as spot a non-privileged user. It's not just running without a "persistent image file" and thus not able to save personal preferences. It is built to run as live image or usb installed and if not it acts like it's possessed.

6.44 with the upgrade DebianEdu/Skolelinux desk and Edu modules is what made my hard drive install of knoppix saner acting.

ndiswrapper drivers is what I have and to manually configure them think it was just right click on the phone connection icon and follow the prompts.

May not have seen Craigevil's list. He updates it in his sig line when finds new info so maybe worth finding a recent post of his.

This is the only time I am going to post his list on this site.

If you want "protection" you can boot with the cheat code knoppix secure and you won't have the root option. :)

When I used Knoppix over the years it was always as a toolbox to go in and do one particular thing my regular desktop couldn't do and then get out as quickly as I could. I've used Knoppix exclusively for two days and have learned a number of things.

You can have multiple persistent images and they can be piggybacked, each time adding more and more configurations. Even better with the update option you can add any configurations or apps you wish and Knoppix will add them to the overlay while it's booting up.

I'm writing this in Knoppix and the default "protection" settings won't let me use the [url] code. It blocks the forum spellchecker, too. Nasty old javascript I suppose. :)

I have a feeling my days with Puppy are numbered. It seems an 8.2GB OS has more functionality than one of 128MB. I ordered the eight DVD set of Debian and may return to it. Perhaps Squeeze has more than Sarge that I used for years (since it's four times larger--talk about bloat).

Knoppix people do Help

#36 Post by gcmartin »

This Knoppix Forum was valuable for meover the years.

Bernie's comments brings an interesting light that I have been viewing over past 9 months (specific number). His comment, the recent opening of 32bit Puppy ability to "see" more than 3GB RAM, and co-workers who i discovered recently don't know the differences between RAM, ISO distro size, Virtual Memory Use, and RAM based file-systems versus OS memory model usage in conjunction with CPU firmware. (I don't make this point to overwhelm anyone, but just to share that as we grow in our knowledge of Puppy implementations, I must keep relating that to system architectures to keep a good perspective.)

For him, he (rightfully) see a relationship that makes sense.

Hope this helps

Debian Repositories

#37 Post by myke »

Jim3630, thanks for the list of Debian Repositories. I installed Knoppix from a Linux magazine on the bash scripting language to a partition on my hard disk. (I know that it trivializes to a Debian installation). Why? Because I liked the hardware recognition and the look and was intrigued by the file formatting it used, reiserfs.

The first problem I faced was the limited selection of additional software available and after adding some of the repositories I should be able to find what I want.

The second problem found was the lack of recognition by grub4dos. Guess that grub4dos doesn't work with reiserfs. My workaround is that Pinguy, an Ubuntu derivative using grub2, picks up Knoppix after doing an update-grub.

Looking thru the thread, I wonder if we could use a document that suggest how to:
  • run a LiveCD/DVD "persistent" environment
  • remaster a LiveCD/DVD Knoppix ISO to run GRUB2/GRUB4DOS/PinGUY??? at boot time for boor options selection
Has anyone seen any good documentation for doing this?

And, before someone else jumps on the bandwagon on this, there are 2 issues which immediate surface when using Knoppix in RAM mode ("toram") and persistence using the Knoppix DVD LIVE:
  1. The amount of RAM needed on your system that will be used as the Knoppix Filesystem.
  2. where will the persistence files be written/maintained to as Live media space IS an issue.
I know there are other issues, but these seem the most obvious for those of us who have used Knoppix over the years.

Hope this helps.

gcmartin, hope the following is not seen as an attack or criticism or as a rude remark I only try to be practical.

look here http://www.knoppix.net/forum/threads/27 ... g-from-ISO.

Two different users and none answer them. I had another such guy but fail to find his entry post just now. three persons that ask similar questions that I would ask there and them get no usable answer.

That is not a forum for Nobby, I trust it is greater chance I get an answer here on Knoppix and frugal install then there at that forum.

I don't criticise and I trust you got help but I would be treated as an anomaly there. The three example I found within minutes show that it is not a forum that would welcome me.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Well, reiserfs isn't required. I have Knoppix on a FAT32 partition. Naturally grub4dos has no problem with it. I haven't used reiserfs since the days of Linspire.

As a side note Hans Reiser was found guilty of murdering his wife during a bitter divorce in 2008. One news article said this about reiserfs:
The disclosure of the corpse's location puts an end to the rather sordid saga of Nina Reiser's untimely death. Meanwhile, Hans Reiser's filesystem, which was once widely used on the Linux platform, is rapidly fading into obscurity. The last few distributions that used ReiserFS 2 by default have moved on to the more common Ext3 filesystem for various technical reasons, and Reiser was unable to secure approval for streamlining the new version of his filesystem into the Linux kernel prior to his arrest...
Our postmortem analysis of the ReiserFS mailing list, however, seems to indicate that the project is already beginning to fall apart. Ongoing development has been relocated to kernel.org, but the effort could be doomed to bitrot because developers don't seem particularly interested in taking a stab at maintaining the code.
