Puplite 5.0
as a note, if you have to re-run 'xorgwizard' each time you boot, even when you are using a save file, then rename /usr/sbin/xorgwizard-old to /usr/sbin/xorgwizard (remove or rename the original first, obviously)...

puplite 6.0 alpha
In case anyone cares (unlikely, I know), I plan to go for a rather ambitious update of Puplite, to make it fully up to date with Wary 511, Lupu, etc. I also plan to include some unique features and make it as light as ever in terms of RAM and CPU resources used - the ISO will grow, but that's OK, I think.
Some plans:
- easier to use, faster and simpler to setup
- boot STRAIGHT to X desktop, no action required at all (a first)
- updated toolchain (glibc, gcc, etc)
- more flexible save file settings, using new, unique pfix options
- more flexible desktop - disable what you don't want, at 1st boot
- kernel switching at boot (have to keep an eye on pUpnGo for that one)
- new ff4, midori, ffmpeg and vlc
- a quickpet with on the fly SFS loading
- full desktop uses less than 25mb RAM (on my PC.. it varies PC to PC)
(note Puplite 5.0 uses 22mb on my PC at the moment)
Here is the full list (it's big):

I noticed that I did not remember your puplite and I gave same name to Lupu525 Lite so maybe it is named Lucid Puppy Lite 2.0 ? I don't remember. I had an iso with similar name
I did test yours again using the 2.6.32 version? I get internet on this one so could be something changed from Jan 2011 when I failed to get LAN activated. Maybe I used the other kernel version
So that is cool. As I remember now TXZ pup failed to get internet. Pups based on Puppy 412 will fail so maybe them based on 420 will work then.
LHP works.
Now you plan to use Lupu511 so that will work on my computer.
Is it true that it use this much memory. The widget? shows that I have 1000MB and that some 780 is free. That is 220 used? Is that not much for being lite? No criticism at all.
Turbopup claimed him only using some 10 mb but I have not tested it.
One thing that fails are that the drives has no names. on the pin board.

Sorry nooby, but we all know your hardware does not work well with puppy 4 and its derivatives, you have posted about it already... the drivers required to get hardware working depend on the kernel - your hardware needs a newer kernel. Try the Wary511 kernel version of Puplite 5.0, it might work.. I hope so!
...and i dont plan to use lucid for anything, only comparison and inspiration... please read more carefully!
.. and just so you know, turbopup uses 19mb to 22mb of RAM on my system, Lupu uses 100mb+, which, yes, is still very little on new systems (over 512mb RAM).
Puplite has a nicer, easier to use desktop than TurboPup, but it still uses no more RAM than TurbPup... BTW, when I say it is "light", I mean the CPU and RAM usage and requirements, not only the ISO or SFS size.

Yes my Acer D250 using a N270 and Intel 945 chips most likely are unusual. Atheros are famous for having problem getting internet like now when I tested Turbopup again then it fails to get internet.
But your puplite 5.0 did get internet but failed at shut down. it just hanged while creating a pupsave. Did create the save file but did never after that was finished.
Thanks

Xvesa and mouse not compatible.
sc0ttman:
I downloaded your Puplite 5.0 with the intention of loading it on an old
Compaq Ipaq 500 mhz Celeron pc. With the advertised "low resources"
usage of your Puppy it seemed like the one to use. Anyway, I'm "testing"
it now on my much newer pc and something I've come across is this:
I like to use Xvesa for my video setup (I always have) but the mouse doesn't scroll right. For one thing it scrolls backwards (i.e. up = down and
vice versa) and dragging the screen scroll bars is very slooww. The keyboard
up and down arrows are also sluggish. The screen looks like it's in slow motion. Very strange.
I've used and tried out lots of other Pups (on same pc) and never had this
problem with Xvesa. Xorg works fine. Since you said you wanted feedback
I thought I'd let you know.

Thanks for testing Yogi.. Not good, but I think we have a fix...Yogi wrote:sc0ttman:

It appears the tiny, static Xvesa which technosaurus built (which is smaller and does use less resources than the Xvesa it replaced) has issues for some users.
You are not the first to report this problem. I personally have used this Xvesa across a range of systems, and find it to work perfect - mouse wheel scrolling included.
For now, could you please download and install the standard Puppy 4 Xvesa, and let me know if it is any different? I think it should be the fix we are looking for.
Get the standard Xvesa here: http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... -7.3-1.pet
Also, how does it run when using Xorg? Sluggish or not so much?
And can you tell the the graphics driver you are using, if possible?
Hard Info might list it, or try 'lsmod' in the terminal, or the 'Device' section, in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
....
If anyone else reading this has similar problems, I suggest trying Xorg, or installing the Xvesa above - and let me know how it goes please!

answer:
Xorg runs fine. I installed the Xorg-Xvesa pet and it did correct the mouse
backwards scrolling issue. But scrolling with the mouse or up-down arrows
is still sluggish, albeit a liitle bit improved.
Here is the graphics driver info:
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "nv" #card0driver
VendorName "nVidia Corporation"
BoardName "NV18 [GeForce4 MX 4000 AGP 8x]"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"

When you say scrolling issues, are you talking about any program in particular, such as firefox? which is sometimes known to have this problem with certain packages... or is it including ROX and all other programs?

I've tried Opera, Firefox, Firedog, Firepup and SeaMonkey.
Everyone is affected as well as ROX and Geany.

deadbeef
I got a working deadbeef PET for Puplite, that is also very small...
It supports mp3, and also possibly wav, ogg, others...
It is around 200kb, and seems to work really nicely... It is not the latest, but I have yet to find anything that didn't work, or anything missing that I wanted It should work in all pups.

Puplite _Keyboard -No responser
Hi Scotman:
I am having a weird problem with puplite 5.
I found a modem it recognized but it will not allow me to type in my username-isp etc.
Keyboard works fine everywhere else.

possible temp solution
Hi, you may want to try this, as a temporary fix. Try to type it in another window, copy and paste into the box. I had to do this on one linux version of opera browser, to transfer all my settings into the new browser. Thanks, Rob

What I did was modify wdial.confg and that seemed to work. This is a customers machine so I need to figure out how to make it work normally if possible

I'll be happy to help, but not sure which GUI reads wdial.conf..Frank Cox wrote:Thanksoligin10 wrote:Hi, you may want to try this, as a temporary fix. Can you tell me the script which loads the GUI? I will get in there and hack at it..

First time tried puplite 5 and it is much faster than the later puppies on a PIII 933 Mhz 512MB ram machines.
The first app I installed was Opera 11 but it crashed on several occasions so I installed Firefox 3.6 and that works fine.
Thunar, LibreOffice, Gimp, Wbar. etc all installed fine and work well.
I did enable 5 compatibility.
Now I tried several ways to install Chrome (my favorite browser) but with no success. There are some missing libs. There are couple pets floating around to help install Chrome in Puppy 4.x and earlier 5.x and I tried them as well. Still there are missing libs.
Anyway to get later version of Chrome (v13-15) to work?
Thanks,
