Hi there,

I appreciate your concern. And, indeed, there is somebody out there trying to take advantage of my work. (Grimaldo.)

But Studio 4 is my latest offering. It's meant to be a paid commercial product aimed at Windows users. After being kicked off the forum for no reason and enduring all kinds of insults, I figured I'd try a different approach.

I really appreciate what lowtech did/accomplished as i followed the puppy studio project from it's beginning..

I have purchased studio 4 and am anxiously waiting for a reply to my email sent this date as to packaging ; download or via mail.
As i said in the email to studio 4 , it's not specified on the website.

why exactly was lowt3ch kicked off the forums anyway? If that is the case, I wish him luck, but seriously... what is to stop everyone else charging $50 for their puplets, as long as it comes on a disc or USB? I though it was not the done thing, maybe even not allowed! Surely Puppy includes stuff that comes with its own license that says it cannot be SOLD.

But good luck to lowt3ch, he did GREAT work... And deserves somethign for it!

I'm not sure about sales (though Barry's derivatives may have restrictions). I thought under GPL, that you could do essentially anything you wanted with the code, including selling it, but that you had to make the source available for free... (which might make a sale more difficult).

Retro you may be very right about this one
you had to make the source available for free..
that is what they tell the remixes on TinyCore Linux.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Releasing source: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.htm ... JustBinary

And selling GPL products:http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.htm ... AllowMoney

So if Lowtech wants to sell it (e.g. his services for compiling, testing, bundling, and delivering), he appears to be within GPL. However, somewhere he must make the source available (or rewrite all of the GPL software within his package to release it from this restriction).

I'm trying it

`

I bought a copy

just because PuppyStudio 3.3rt is the best Linux studio to date AFAIK.

I have checked out a few.

This project needs to continue.

And of course the original licenses of the underlying source code should be respected.

It's not an attempt to hide the fact, it's copyright.

As Ubuntu is to Debian, Studio 4 is to Puppy.

Really, l0wt3ch doesn't have to give any more credit to Barry than Barry gives to Torvalds and Stallman for the Linux kernel and GNU tools.

Q: What are the legal details?
Can you please explain to me more clearly the copyright, trademark and any other restrictions of Puppy?
A:
Puppy has software with a variety of licences, mostly GPL or LGPL, some closed-source (but free). The "Help" page (/usr/share/doc/index.html) in every release of Puppy has this statement:
Legal notice:
I, Barry Kauler, established the 'Puppy Linux Project' in January 2003, first website and product release 18-June-2003, and I have trademark claim to the name and typed drawing of 'Puppy Linux', 'PuppyOS' and 'Puppy' as it relates to "computer operating system software to facilitate computer use and operation", under Federal and International Common Law and Trademark Laws as appropriate.
Programs in Puppy are open source (except where noted above), and licences of individual products are duly acknowledged. The name Puppy Linux", also known as "Puppy" and "PuppyOS", and all artisitic creations thereof, are copyright (c) 2003,2004,2005,2006,2007,2008 Barry Kauler.
Disclaimer:
Very simple, use entirely at your own risk. Barry Kauler accepts no liability or responsibility whatsoever, and you use Puppy with this understanding.
The "closed-source (but free)" software he refers to is Flash.

Barry released his software under the GPL years ago.

Why can't everybody just let this go? It sound like one are maybe more just wants to get something started.

Who ever is behind this is more than likely who released Puppy Studio. They chose to leave the PUPPY Community, so let them go.
