Jim1911. I havent done more that ATI driver pet. It is in the ftp site under Drivers I think.
666Philb made Nvidia package for experimental 2.6.38.2 kernel Snow Puppy. Sickgut posted the howto do it yourself in Snow Puppy thread for Nvidia drivers and there is also good guidance to do it easily yourself in Ice Puppy thread and now also in Spup alpha thread by Wuwei.
So you need just devx.sfs, kernel source sfs and nvidia package and 30 minutes of time. (And maybe blacklisting of nouveau driver and nv if needed.)

Hello, pemasu

You like snow and ice very much, don't you?

I am happy with snowpup 18th version. Thank you.

It works well(net setup, scim,) But one little problem is that wine doesn't work better than version 16th.

It ran wined Nendo demo version in the 16th but not so well in 18th.

It starts but freezes when I try to use it. Maybe it's the wine thing. Which wine version(pet or sfs) would you recommend?

Sorry. I have been bit busy with compiling Qt4-4.8.0. I hope I have it now right. Smplayer and latest Handbrake compiled fine with it. Still the Qt4 is somewhat big but I just cant compete with Barry Kaulers T2 compiling platform. It just produces unbeliavable size. Well, I used the latest Qt4.
I will upload my Qt4 as sfs and pet, same with DEV stuff.
Smplayer and Handbrake are first with my Qt4 app series. And they are compiled in Qt4 compiled in Snow Puppy. At least spesific OS environment.

Code: Select all

./configure -prefix /opt/qt4 -release -no-dbus -no-qt3support -gtkstyle -no-phonon -no-largefile -optimized-qmake -qt-sql-sqlite -system-sqlite -no-opengl -no-3dnow -no-sse -no-sse2 -no-sse3 -no-ssse3 -nomake examples -nomake demos -multimedia -audio-backend
Qtconfig is nice tool to adjust Qt4 application outcome and font size. Makes Qt4 app outlook much better. I have compiled gtkstyle in my Qt4 libraries.

I tried also VLC-1.1.9. That app is monster to get all needed dependencies working and ubuntu lucid base is not good for it. I just couldnt get xcb dependencies met. Whatever I tried. Well, my VLC compile was miserable failure.

Posting now from arora compiled with installed qt4. At least it browses and I can post with it. I have now uploaded my qt4 stuff to the pets and sfs folders.

Needed qt4 and applications handbrake, smplayer are as pets and sfs. Arora webbrowser as pet only. It was so small.

Download link to pet folder: http://smokey01.com/pemasu/Pets

Download link to sfs folder: http://smokey01.com/pemasu/Sfs

After installing the qt4 package, you need to restart your Puppy. Otherwise the qt4 libs are not found from the /opt location. Also using in console #qtconfig adjusts the fonts and you can have gtk style enabled.

using a partition to save conig

#554 Post by Béèm »

There have been some questions about using a whole partition to save the config info and to install packages.

I never did it, so I took the 019 to make that exercise.

After booting from the Lin'N'Win frugal and doing the 1st setup, I wanted to create the save. But I never got the option to select between saving t a whole partition or to create a save file.
In fact I only can create a save file.

Is this possibility to save to a partition suppressed?
Or is it due to the fact I don't boot from a CD?

Beem. Saving to the partition is also for me the possibility I havent ever used. I dont have also possiblity to test it in my main laptop. But I can test it with usb stick but that is not the same.
So for me it needs also testing. I dont use CD`s normally but I can burn test CD.

Hi,
I don't burn to CD either, but I created one in multi-session.
Booted, did the config and rebooted.
At the screen to create a save, I only got the option to create a save file on a partition, to the multi-session, or no save.
Looks like the possibility to save to a whole partition isn't there anymore.
Maybe Barry did change this.

Don't know if this is applicable to your situation but saving to a partition is only available if using a Linux filesystem.....ext2,3 or 4.

You dont get option to save to the partition if you boot Puppy from the subfolder.
Frugal: saving session to entire partition
When Puppy is installed to hard drive in what we call "frugal" mode, we have the choice of saving the session to either a file or to the entire partition. The same thing holds for Puppy installed on a USB stick.

However, to save to the entire partition, it must be a Linux filesystem. It can't be done on a fat or ntfs partition.

Of course, saving session to a file has it's advantages, such as you can have lots of them and they are easy to backup. But, they do have a size limitation, I think of about 4GB although I have never tested that.

Saving to the entire partition is a kind of quasi-full-Linux-installation. You are using the entire partition to save your session, so you have available all the free space of that partition.

I have been testing this. Previously there was a problem with mounting SFS files when the session is saved to the entire partition, but recent puppies have a special patched Aufs that allows this. My test installation has various SFS files, including OpenOffice and it is working nicely.

See my earlier blog post on this patched Aufs:
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01535

However, I have had to fix a couple of scripts. You cannot save the session to entire partition if Puppy is installed in a subdirectory. So, I have modified the Puppy Universal Installer to warn of this -- if it sees that you are installing to a Linux partition it warns not to install into a subdirectory if you intend or think you might want to save the session to the entire partition.

Also, when Puppy is booted for the first time and then shutdown, the rc.shutdown script checks to see if Puppy is installed in a subdirectory. If so, will not offer to save session to the entire partition (but does put up an explanation why not), only to a file.
Also it needs sfs-allow-as-branch.patch to be applied and I think that has been done. Well, I can always check that from patched source that it is really applied.

EDIT. Kernel source is patched with that needed patch.

Linux Multimedia Studio 0.4.10 added to the Qt4 saga.
I noticed that after installing my compiled latest Qt4 (which installs qt libs to the /opt/qt4/lib) you need to remove existing qt4 libs also to get Lmms working.
in console: #rm /usr/lib/libQt*
My compiled set is anyway little larger.
Well, if you need them back, I can provide a pet for those older Qt libs.
I have uploaded Lmms-0.4.10 to the ftp site under Pets.
Maybe later I will make sfs of it, if it works.

You might need to install some audio libs from the ubuntu repos. I used audio lib devs from there and some audio libs was needed also when compiling.
If lmms does not start from the menu, launch it from the console and check the errors. I will reupload the lmms with needed libs. My compile distro is now quite packages up with different stuff so apps surely run in my environment.
