Laptop fn keys, media keys, and volume knob

#1 Post by toomuchcomputertime »

I am using a Toshiba L505D-S5965 laptop.

The volume knob does not do anything (works in most other Linuxes)
the Media keys don't do anything (works in most other Linuxes)
and the fn keys don't do anything, I can't turn on and off wireless, hibernate, etc, things important for a laptop, these only work in vista.....

Does anyone know how to at least get the volume knob and media keys (play pause, and skip ) working? Since no other linuxes can get the FN keys working (presumably because of the Intel H2O Insyde Bios), I am assuming they won't work, at least for several years, but others, such as Ubuntu, Debian can do the others.

Summary:
Fn keys
Media keys
Volume Knob

Thanks.

I just did this on my girlfriend's laptop.

Check out http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=19860

I ended up making a few bash scripts that were executed by jwm for each hotkey. I used the alsa commands in the post by vg1 in conjunction with yaf-splash to make a nice volume changing script.

Good luck.

Thanks, I am trying, but it has not worked yet for me. I have a Toshiba L505d-s5965, and they seem to have lots of problems on Linux.

Thanks.

Normally I suggest people search the additional software section of the forum for sven, which I think is probably the easiest way of getting special keys like volume controls working.
But I thought special function keys for changing screen brightness etc usually dealt directly with the hardware, and worked without any configuration...
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

What did?
I have Toshiba satelite A300 and I'd like to get my volume knob working, but I don't know how.

I use xbindkeys and xbindkeys-config for keybindings. Sven is another choice, but you cant use both at the same time. All these packages should be easy to find.
