Puppy Lupen- K 2.6.38.4.....Compiz-Fusion/Emerald/Cairo-dock
Hello,
Wow, a month....
I really thought Compiz/GLX-dock would generate more interest...
Still working fine for me...
Compiz isnt just eye candy..
Get used to using it, and it becomes very intuitive....
Maybe it is just me....

Hello,
If the md5 matches, my guess would be a bad burn.
Check these against your CD..
ee45499d4c90cde662a80ad1351f1f85 lupu_529.sfs

acc51a38332309e8834e0aaf7eddacd2 vmlinuz
Also, can you get GL running on the I915 chipset??
Compiz must have it... Cairo dock has GL and nonGL versions installed...

I think GL is running but this machine isn't really up to it for a snappy experience. It booted to 1600x1200, even after backing down to 1280x1024 it's sluggish.
Also, forgive me if this seems noobish but how do I restart? Can't find the menu item, I wanted to do a frugal install and see how it runs that way.
Edit: Nevermind I found it. However when I click on "reboot computer" nothing happens.
Also ran glxgears, I'm getting 300's, my video just ain't up to it.
Edit2: Nevermind again, reboot worked after I tried it again.

Hello,
Devx here..
U/N puppy P/W linux
http://puppylinuxstuff.meownplanet.net/ ... vx_539.sfs
You may or may not have to rename it to lupu_devx_529.sfs, as it was made before the # change...(Got complaints midway thru...future alphas will have a different # convention.)
While in the bootmanager, go to system services..
By default I turned off Cups, Firewall, and SLmodemUSB...
List any needed fixes for Alpha 2..
Needs a poweroff button on the dock..
Right click the systray to send it back to the dock where it belongs...
To speed it up a bit, kill the dock and restart it without GL from the menu...
Cairo-dockGLX is more graphic intensive in Compiz, non GL version still works and looks cool...

Hello, Well, I finally borked it.. LOL
I`ve been trying to abuse and destruct my Lupen frugal...
I installed everything I could think of....
I cranked everything, Compiz, Cairo-dock, composite effects...
Very flashy.. Kinda bogged my machine down, but...
Seemed bulletproof...
Cold kills, etc...Heck, I tried everything...
Along comes DevTools, a little GUI I`m working on...
One of the intended functions is building pets..
While testing a version in /root....
I tried to compile a program, Firefox 6.x.....63mb..
Expands to 278+ mb... in /root..inside my save...
Overflowed it...
Oops..
Dont do that...
Didnt really bork it..
Jacked up a bunch of settings though...
Look... Ive been running this 24/7,
thru every reboot/cold kill/Wm swap...
I dont have much feedback from after a successful desktop...
But for me, on a Compaq CQ-56....
This thing seems really strong...
Compiz is a PITA...
But beyond a few composite conflicts between Compiz and GLX-Dock,
I`m really surprised how stable it is....
I know that a lot was compiled on my specific machine..
So....
Somebody give me some feedback from different machines please...

I downloaded the factory nvidia driver for my PC and went to compile it.
It gives me a wrong kernel error and fails to install.
In looking in /lib/modules two kernels are listed. Would that have anything to do with it?
My card is a Nvidia GeForce 6150SE and I am trying to use the NVIDIA-Linux-x86.290.10.run package.
Or is it something different with the file structure in Puppy?
Also, when I try depmod -a and then modprobe nvidia, I get a message that says the nvidia module cannot be found in /proc/modules.

Hello,
Wow, thank you... interesting.. (eyebrow goes up..)
Will have to investigate that from a clean boot.. cause...
I have 4!!
But I compiled some kernels from within this Lupen..
2.6.38.4 is the one Lupen uses...
?
Did you D/L the kernel sources along with the devx?
So, other than the rox pinboard, any other issues..
I realize that if you are seeking the nvidia driver, you are prob not running compiz yet, but in openbox/jwm/afterstep/e16, it blazes for me..
Seems bulletproof.. acpitools works great..(Will be in the beta ) Settled on FF 8.01 I think...
I am in no way done with this..
I need feedback, from many machines...
In the beta, compiz wont be default, cause of so much setup on some machines...
But Compiz isnt all this dog has to offer..
The glibc, the fixed git, the kernel, the fixed dpkg..
PAE/Highmem, multi CPU support, Cairo.
In openbox/jwm, with xcompmgr enabled, it if pretty flashy without compiz..
The 2.6.38.4 kernel is the last to not fail me..
Solid built, (not by me) and no weird issues..
from 2.6.39 on I have had Usb, Wireless, and FS errors, and more..
I have built it on quite a few newer kernels...
So Lupen is, ATM, staying with 2.6.38.4(lupe22/pemasu)
The alpha garnered minimal response...
But wait... LOL...

Hello,
Geez.. that bug is killing me.. LOL
See, during Woof, I typo`d 539 instead of 529.. So I released it as 539...
However, some members felt that was a giant leap in version #`s, so I changed it back.. That created a whole host of problems.. I should have just left it alone...
I always do a manual Frugal install, so I never encountered this problem..
It asks me to upgrade my save every time though...
Will fix in the next version... But for now...
Hmmm..
Were you planning a frugal (recommended) install, or a full one?
Do you have any frugal installs ATM..
If so, just create a lupen directory, copy the contents of the ISO in to it, and copy and edit an existing grub entry to point to it...

This is another for your information thing I found.
If you open a terminal outside of x and start pressing the up arrow, the history of the commands you used in building Lupen all come into view.
At least I thought it was interesting.
I though the command line cache was cleared on a reboot or boot.
So what was missing to clear that command line cache?
Try it and see if you get it too.

Hello,
Cloned post..::
Hello,
(Red faced)..
See.. Lupen was Woofed, then manually remastered to get Compiz/Cairo straight..
Lotta parts of my personal desktop left over...
Hope I cleared the browser cache... LOL
Actually, I thought I cleaned it up pretty well..
Now I gotta reboot in ram and check it out...
As I said, mostly, the Alpha is to see what it takes to release an OOTB Compiz Puplet, since Ripple went under.. Compiz wont be the default WM. But I wanna build a "Lupen/Compiz" sfs for the final release, and a WM switcher for it..
Lupen is my daily OS, for months now..
I have many frugalled..
Three Headed Dog, Fatdog64, Macpup, Slacko, Dpup, Wary, Racy, Quirky, 310/528, and more...
But in the end, I have the most "issue free' Pup in Lupen.. It just works..
BUT...
It was built, and mostly compiled, on my laptop, for my laptop...
So all the bugs you guys find, help me make it "universal"...
BTW..
Because some configurations required, in my limited experience, manual setup, Lupen is not a true Woof, but a 'remastered' Woof, from a 525 base, built on kernel 2.6.38.4-lupe22- (by pemasu...)
Since the core (lupu-539-scsi.iso) is rock solid, I continue to 'remaster' it..
By 'remaster' I mean I unpack the .sfs, modify some files, and repack it... This approach can create bugs with the initrd in rare cases.. One is the savefile upgrade issue... Some stuff was created in '539' and some in '529'.. Stupid typo.. Stupider to try to fix it..
Regardless, Here is the thing...
Lupen is my Pup, from now on...
I have realized the futility of a new Puplet vs an Update...
So Puppyluvr = Lupen...
Maybe a PAW .sfs...etc...
But one base...
A Lupen core, to build on..
One base...??
(side tracked)
Puppy has so many "bases" to work with, its hard to keep track..
I really want to rebuild Lupen from all puppy packages..
But the `butu repos are too hard to resist...
Since Lucid is an LTS release, they should be around a while..
(Napu, the Natty Pup, is, ATM, not happening)
But I so want to be a "purist"..
Puppy for Puppy..
Our repo, our packages...
We are Puppy Linux damn it..
OK, rant over...

Hello,
LOL.. I am an idiot...
The reason the installer fails is not Lupen..
It is MultiPup...
Lupen is in a folder on the CD...
The installer only looks on the top level...
When it asks, "Where are the Puppy files?"..
Choose "Folder" not "CD"...
Point it to the files on the CD...
Or just do it manually...

White screen
Both on my desktop(frugal install) and on the virtual machine(virtual iso), lupen-0.1 boots up to the X and shows the full screen logo, then goes to blank(white) background with a mouse pointer. The mouse moves but any click shows nothing.
Ctr+Alt+Backspace can go down to the prompt. I typed 'xwin' then it shows the full screen logo and go to the white background...
My graphic board is nVidia and the X-driver maybe vesa.
The md5sum of iso is right.
