For me the most efficient way is still a bug reporting/follow-up system like bugzilla.aarf wrote:takes a very good skill set to know what needs to be done. perhaps you could delegate them to people who have the require skill after discerning the problem?playdayz wrote:Make and coordinate the necessary fixes and send them to me.tell us exactly what you want that someone to do with the bug reports and someone might step-up. If a project leader/main developer could work with the people in his team willing to use that system the status of a reported issue can be seen in a wink. Users will not be frustrated anymore to have to say they reported such and such issue already before.
Also for the project leader/main developer work will be easier.
I still don't understand how a person can cope with those long forum threads.
And I know this has been raised before and the general reaction was that anarchy is a better way.
Just my 2 ¢

Yes I know I should just shut up
Then anarchy maybe works better but the best structure still would be inner motivation based on the whole thing feeling good and fun to do.
Both too much structure and too much anarchy maybe can be too much of a good thing. To each his own.
My experience is that as long as something feels good and is fun to do then almost any organization or structure does work but the problem starts when it starts to feel tedious and not fun.I know this has been raised before and the general reaction was that anarchy is a better way.

G'day,
Frugal then Full installs of the three headed dog directly from .iso (no CD used - thanks rjbrewer for the how-to-do).
My desktop system has a new ATI radeon HD5450 card which has problems with many Pups' default radeon driver when shutting down (not just this Pup). And that's when the radeon driver would actually run - my monitor is 1600x900 which the default-to-radeon vesa did not offer.
01micko's ATI pet mentioned earlier in this thread fixed the problem plus allowed the ATI Catalyst Control Centre to also run. Other different kernel ATI pets have fixed the shut-down problem in many Pups but not always to also allow the ATI Control Centre to function which now looks to depend on the kernel being right. Pity about the ATI's size.
Everything else in luci-529 has worked well and quickly on my computer.
Thanks to playdayz for the succession of excellent Pups, regardless of their number of heads.
David S.

Can you describe in detail your procedure for installing the ati_fglrx pet? It is so I can get a handle on it and improve the pinstall.sh script to make it easy for all. Lobster is having issues in Slacko.
Cheers

we are making the same jokes (I am on the Slacko head)Fluffy anyone?
I am so pleased that everyone is supportive
Maybe Pemasu, BarryK with Upup + Quickpet (hopefully) or our growing kennel of developers will find some fun emergence.
Even though Lucid is the more complete and polished product
woof does move things on . . . (Barry has just released a 13 Aug Woof)
Go Puppy
I don't think we are on general bugs now, but on specific bugs.
Let me explain.
It seems now that most software works OTB. (General app bugs)
The issues now are:-
specific hardware,
software interaction
erroneous bugs
Specific hardware: Is say, when video card A works for everyone but video card B does not.
Video card B has issues with the hardware or kernel version.
(Only another person with same card can help really)
Software interaction: When an app works fine but install another app afterwards or before, it then spoils the original app operation.
(Sometimes hard to replicate)
Erroneous bug: Quick bug report, generally withdrawn quickly when a mistake is found by user.
=========
I spent many an hour trying to chase bugs of the above kinds, only to find when I had an answer, that when I checked forum it was solved.
I now stick to my own apps or those I had a hand in.
It would be impossible for playdayz to be able to handle the bugs himself and he has to wait for an appropriate user to solve it and get back to him. All kudos to him for handling it so well.

Unfortunately I don't really have a "late-model" radeon card anymore. I have a 3850 and a 4670. I think that it would be the 5000 series and especially the 6000 that might be the problem. If you could send me one, I could test itI will need help with the pinstall script, so Lobster, mikesLr, davids45, Billtoo, playdayz.. anyone else with a late model Radeon video card please test and report your experience.
I installed the new fglrx pet on the 3850 and everything went well. I installed, then exited to a prompt and ran aticonfig --initial, then xwin to restart X with the driver working.
The only anomaly is that when I exited back to X to check that I had a working console (which I did) there was a message I had never seen before. I seem to get that each time I use xwin now.
Code: Select all
# xwin
# dirname: extra operand '/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers-backup/vesa_drv.so'
# Try 'dirname --help' for more info

Yes. Very well said tasmod. During the last week or two of the process, the "erroneous" bugs might constitute 50% of the total reported. Everyone is a bit on edge then I think and any anomaly is automatically assumed to be a bug. The anarchy of the thread worked OK for me--we did 6 good releases after all--I have just hit a point where I am as Lobbie said "burned out." I can play but the task of trying to fix bugs and then rebuilding only to face more bugs had to end. Of course, if people see a bug they have to report it.The issues now are:-

There is already a Bugzilla type reporting/follow-up sytem in place for Puppy.Béèm wrote:For me the most efficient way is still a bug reporting/follow-up system like bugzilla.

Just seems no developer wants to use it.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected
YaPI(any iso installer)

the objection was more to google and third party, than to the bugtrackerbigpup wrote:There is already a Bugzilla type reporting/follow-up sytem in place for Puppy.Béèm wrote:For me the most efficient way is still a bug reporting/follow-up system like bugzilla.

I can play
A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away . . .
[oops - no that is the intro to star wars . . .]
Not so long ago . . . when I first started to seriously try and use Linux I was running Knoppix and Windows XP (most people were not yet trusting XP) and I was on the Knoppix Linux forum (feeling stupid and computer illiterate) I also used to lurk on the Puppy 'Simpleforum' and listen to Barry and the early Puppy users sorting out the early adopter problems. Puppy was my Linux education.
Most of the Linux distros I tried . . . and I tried probably 50-100, all seemed only superficially different. A different arrangement of kernel and software. Anyway before I ramble on into some ewok forest party, suffice to say Puppy is more fun and that is only one of the differences . . .
Barry is still doing fun woof stuff, developers, testers, program writers, users and advisers to our youngest Pups, the whole kennel is a lot of fun.
Some of us are living amongst all kinds of personal and global events.
Puppy runs our computers. Good dog.
In some sort of play daze a Lucid to release will arrive over the next week or two - or we will move straight to Slacko or . . . [who knows]
Too anarchic?
Too much fun?

playdayz a big warm friendly hug from me. I am no Dev but I almost know how it feels. I try to make a "mobility aid bike" kind of vehicle and have struggled with it for at least three years and "bugs" hit me every time I fix one of them and my slogan is that developing should be fun.
So nobody should blame you for having to recharge the batteries so do what feels best. Great thanks for all the exciting things that already have been accomplished.

Does anyone know? Is there a module or sensor or something missing in Lucid? I have never been able to get temp readings with my Phenoms either. Hardinfo -> Sensors gives me nothing at all.

I saw the same in Exprimo and raised the issue.
Pemasu replied that libsensors4 is needed.
He will include it in a next release.
