Puppylinux for the OLPC laptops: XOpup
XO-1 touchpad
A couple of weeks now I'm trying to see if there is anyway to tame the XO-1 touchpad that goes nuts by itself every so often.
Logging the events one can see that are happening almost one every 3-4 minutes after the first 10 minutes.
Resetting and recalibrating the touchpad every few minutes (7 in this case) dramatically decreases the "going nuts" events.
The downside is that every 7 minutes a warning comes up that tells you to keep off the touchpad because it resets.
You may find it annoying, or you can see it as a form of WorkRave/anti-RSI
The warning can be eliminated but if you touch the touchpad while is resetting and recalibrates it goes nuts again. So you have to decide for your self what bothers you most
Anyway, if you have a lot of problems with the XO-1 touchpad download and install this pet, restart your XO-1, see how it goes and report back eitherway.
Edit: v2 has some changes in the order of things and editorial changes in the warning
Edit 2: v3 adds a bigger time gap between the warning message and the actual touchpad resetting, since was often easy to miss it and try to use the touchpad while it was resetting
PS If you rather take your chances without the warning, you can right-click and "open as text" the (invisible) /root/.power_cycle_touchpad file and comment out by hash (#) the long line 2 (in v2) or line 5 (in v1).
To change the frequency of the event, change the number (seconds) in line 4 of the /root/Startup/touchpad_log file

Thunar WM
BK posted a standalone Thunar file manager that works fine in XOpup (no JPG issues).
However, when you click on "home" or a mounted volume you still get ROX-Filer, which I think is confusing unless you want Thunar only for "special missions".
So I modified the pet a bit to also open Thunar when clicking on desktop volumes or folders.
To give it a spin, download and install thunar-1.0.2-1-i486-xo.pet
Although the pet is labeled "-xo" should work fine on any puppy 5x.

I can see several downloads of both the alternative olpc.fth and the touchpad.pet.
Any feed back would be appreciated so we can decide to include it or not in an upcoming version of XOpup or as an update to 2.1.
Thx

tuxmath, type, paint etc
ttuuxxx provided tyxmath, tuxtype tuxpaint and supertux with the required SDL libraries as pets in this forum thread
They will not work in XOpup (and other 5.x puppies I assume) unless you first
Then tyxmath, tuxtype and tuxpaint work fine.
SuperTux is conflicting with olpc-kbdshim XO keyboard daemon and is missing a proper desktop entry. So if you want to install it, install afterwards the supertux_helper.pet attached here that
a) will stop olpc-kbdshim upon SuperTux start and restart it on exit
b) provide a proper SuperTux desktop entry and
c) will take care of the libpng command mentioned above.
Note. version 2 of the pet is just merging 3 scripts of v1 in one. There is not any functional change between the two versions. So if you got v1 you do not need to update to v2.

mount NAND
If you install the new OLPC 11.2.0 builds in the internal NAND of your XO-1 you'll find out that you can not access it anymore from XOpup.
The attached F14_NAND-2.pet will fix this
It contains the required devices, ubiattach and ubidetach from mtd-utils_20090606-1ubuntu0.10.04.1_i386.deb and a script to modify fstab and rc.local.
Install and you'll be able to access both NAND partitions from /.xo-nand and /.xo-nand2.
Do not install if you are running a Fedora 11 build (OLPC 10.1.3 or Dextrose2)
Version 2 will check if you are running and F14 build on your XO-1 and will exit (with a warning) without messing up your fstab and rc.local, but is still not a good idea to install the pet if you do not have an F14 build in your NAND.

OOo4Kids
OOo4kids is the OpenOfice.org suit adapted for kids (class 7- to 12+)
I made an 82MB sfs out of the current 1.2 version of OOo4Kids that runs fine on XOpup and probably other puppies.
The nice thing about OOo4kids is that you can adjust the "User Level" to Beginner/Advanced/Expert (from Tools > Options > OOo4Kids > General) to present different number of buttons and options to the user.
One think that you may want to do is to increase the default scaling from 115% to 125% from Tools > Options > OOo4Kids > View
Download the SFS file from:
http://www.datafilehost.com/download-86604a0b.html -new version
(md5sum: ad2fb1ce492f546a98fde07d57ebe1d1)
and enjoy
Edit: The md5sum: ad2fb1ce492f546a98fde07d57ebe1d1 version has improvements in usability (right-click "open with..." and MIME-Types in /root/Choices)

Congratulations Mavrothal and the rest of the gangsters!!!
Hi guys,
I v been off from puppy forum for quite a while and specially from the xopup project.Just wanted to visit this historical thread and see how you guys are doing. Mavrothal, i will never forget the days that you tirelessely fought with xopup those days !!! The blows were heavy and the march forward was infact really scary.but you did it!And the rest of the guys too.(Mitch Bradley, thanks buddy for the continued support). In one of my emails to him he had mentioned how he had earlier tried to convince some of our puppy gurus as to how to boot the XO with Puppy but failed due to the "hell bent" nature of our puppyians.Well im sure we all agree at the same time that if it werent for the hellbentness of puppyians to get xopup up and running.Xopup would stil have been a dream. Ok guys keep it up.I salute you all for the great effort you guys put in to make the world a better place,in a puppy way!

Frisbee network manager
After some little effort I got the much more user-friendly Frisbee network manager developed by Jemimah, to work in XOpup reliably .
Just download and install the attached pet, reboot and click the connect icon on the desktop.
Then select your network, click "+Create Profile for selected network" and you are done!
Check its many other features at its original thread
Be advised that the Frisbee_XO pet installation will overwrite rc.local and rc.services, so if you have done any modifications in these make sure to back them up before you install.
Also note that after installation or removal of the pet you'll have no network until reboot.
Finally, among other needed mods, I also modified the install script so all the previous network setting will be preserved and re-instated to their "before-frisbee" state if you uninstall Frisbee.
So give it a try. You'll like it
v2 of the pet has minor fixes in the reconnect script to detect "strange" AP names and a correction in rc.local to bring mesh down at startup.
Note: I find Frisbee messages both cute and fitting for both the XO laptop and XOpup. However, if you rather not have them, just type in terminal:
Revert, to get the messages back

XOpup-2.2.RC has been released
Just updated XOpup to XOpup-2.2.RC (xopup-204).
There is the usual updates, additions, bugfixes etc (see changelog for details), but the most noticeable for the user, is the addition of the Frisbee network manager.
To install XOpup-2.2.RC download XOpup-2.2.RC.tar.gz expand it at the root of any USB or SDcard and boot. But first please do see the build Announcement.
To update from a previous xopup-20x build, just expand the tarball at the root of the USB/SDcard that you run XOpup from.
If you do an update instead of a clean/new install, Frisbee may have difficulties connecting immediately after the update.
Reboot after the version update and then use Frisbee for the first time.
Alternatively, before you update to version 204, install the Frisbee_XO-2.pet (in the previous page) that will properly reset your settings, and then update and enjoy.

New power management
One of the missing features in XOpup power management was to properly detect external mice and keyboards and not dim/blank/sleep while they were used.
Not anymore
Thanks to the new olpc-kbdshim-19 from the OLPC folks (pgf) and a lot of messing around with it, XOpup can now "see" the use of external mice/keyboards and act accordingly.
Just download and install the attached kbdshim_udev_19-1.pet, reboot and you are set!
Work in all XOpups from 2.0 onwards.
Note: Since OLPC power management, powers down the USB ports when in suspend, the XOpup will not auto-suspend on prolonged user inactivity when an external mouse/keyboard is attached.
Will dim and blank OK, though.
Will also suspend fine when the lid is closed or the power button is pressed.

XOpup-2.2 Release
Almost 2 years to the date after my Puppylinux-on-XO saga started, 1 year after the first XOpup build was released and 15 builds latter ...
XOpup-2.2 is out.
XOpup-2.2 integrates updates from (the terminated ? ) Puppylinux 5.2.x series, Woof/Wary development, latest OLPC software, various pets and some stuff unique to XOpup.
From faster boot and peripherals-aware power management, to friendly network manager and customization scripts, XOpup has come a long way from the original build. Now looks like a useful OS for the aging XO-1 and the (soon to be replaced by XO-1.75) XO-1.5.
Using the extended Lucid-puppy pet repository and the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS packages, has the ability to carry the XO-1 to the end of its useful life and provide a viable alternative to XO-1.5
Unless major issues are found, I doubt that will be another XOpup build.
I'll try of course to support XOpup the best I can.
It was a fun and educating process for me.
But do not despair, 01micko is developing Slackware Puppy, a Puppylinux 5.3 candidate, and said more than once that he is planning to make it available for the XO too.
So let's give him a hand

Slacko has a zdrv, which should make things a little easier to separate
As soon as final is released (late September), I'll be back playing in Xo land.. SlaXO land..
Let me know mavrothal if you think the video drivers need to be updated. (you can get the versions by looking at "Packages-puppy-slacko-official" on the puppy servers.)
Cheers

I'm not sure which version of geode_drv Slacko is using but anything above 2.11.9 is OK for the XO-1. Slackware 13.37 is using 2.11.10 so I assume is the same for slacko, Should be OK.01micko wrote: Let me know mavrothal if you think the video drivers need to be updated. The XO-1.5 though needs the chrome driver to be compiled from source, since is not upstreamed to Xorg AFAIK.

Did you say "SlaXO"?
Well... I have onemavrothal wrote: Anyone with a VIA7 CPU, VX855/VX875 chipset running Slacko?
This is with the XOpup-2.2 kernel/intrd (though the init script is the original), the chrome driver posted above and the XOpup's xorg.conf.
Adding udev 165 from official slackware, olpc-kbdshim-udev, powerd, olpc-brightnes, olpc-volume, olpc-rotate and the wireless firmware, the XOpup's battery monitor, and rc.local and a small addition in rc.sysint, is in perfect working order
It does need a rotation aware window manager though

Remarkable!
So what works and what doesn't? Did the zdrv make transforming any easier? Did you get my latest Pupdial from Slacko thread? I'm working on an NLS version with gettext...oh and openbox/fbpanel from ppm mostly works..

At the end, EVERYTHING WORKS, including power management.01micko wrote:So what works and what doesn't?
Starting with the original slacko4991, failed totally to pass OFW screen and get to console. Is VIA enabled in the kernel config?
Adding the XOpup kernel got me to startx which failed because the xorgwizard does not even offer the XO resolution (1200x900). Though I'm not sure would have worked even if it was there.
Adding the chome driver, the xorg.conf and `modprobe mousedev' got me to a functional desktop with sound.
Adding the wireless firmware (it is present compressed in the zrdv) got me network.
No. But the "problem" is that the XOpup initrd.gz has the entire kernel and modules (since it has only the XO-specific ones). So does not need anything else.Did the zdrv make transforming any easier?
At some point I might rework the XOpup initrd with just the needed modules and then move the rest to zdrv of the sfs
Did you get my latest Pupdial from Slacko thread?
Not yet
Aaa ha! Thinking globally I seeI'm working on an NLS version with gettext
Not really, but enough to verify that rotation works.openbox/fbpanel from ppm mostly works
It needs fbpanel configuration and an fbpanel-aware fixmenus to be OK.
And some how it managed to mess-up the JWM tray with no Startup tray applications running. I guessed it did something to .xinitrc. I'll have to check.
On different note, I have all the changes and additions (except the kernel) in a tarball. Is only ~850kb (too big for posting) and most of it is udev-165. We could do without it, using the kbdshim-udev from post above in this page and the rc.local from xopup-204, but I think is better to follow "upstreams" as much as possible. Minimizes hacking, facilitates maintainability and can be easier woofyfied

Ok, this is great!
Anything you can think of that can make things easier for olpc in general Slacko development? (BTW, I enabled what I thought would be ok, considering olpc in the kernel, knowing it was doomed anyway! [patches are probably needed])
Note that all the necessary stuff for openbox/fbpanel (fixmenus etc) is available; DaveS and myself are onto making a package I'm also interested in Iguleder's work with Window Maker, reckon's he has his own fixmenus and all, of course more investigation needed. I just think openbox/fbpanel is too slow. Maybe pekwm/tint2? (fixmenus exists thanks to Musher0)
Early days .. will be fun!
Cheers
