Will this mean that stuff compiled on the next 2.14 will not be compatible with Wary5.1.x? If so, that's shame, I'm sure you'll go on a compiling spree once it's all running nicelyttuuxxx wrote:ok guys just to spark some interest, The next update will have the latest development gtk2 and latest stable glib installed including 15 libs and other updates. Well I'm not changing glibc or other deps just gtk and glib and its deps usually are ok to change, The reason why I'm doing this is because new programs request a later version of gtk and when you downgrade the configs, lately you run into a lot of errors that stop you from compiling due to missing newer gtk2 parts, its strange since this gtk is only 2.5yrs old now and now its outdated, even wary's version also is outdated, I was almost ready to add gtk3 to 2.14X due to most newer apps require it, but it had some python deps, which would add a lot of added weight to 2.14X so I reverted to the last gtk2 version, but I do feel That in the near future gtk3 will be more viable, but I'll try to remove the python libs, it was only in the examples where it was looking for it, funny when they first released gtk3 they didn't have python as dep and now they do for examples.
Anyways it bring new life to 2.14X

On Threadget ...
I seem to recall that I had difficulties using Threadget in some puppy, most likely in 214X. I checked my /usr/bin/ThreadGet-file and see that I've changed three instances of /dev/shm/ to /tmp/, probably since 214X lacks /dev/shm (just from the back of my head, not in 214X atm, so cannot verify).
Anyway, after this modification ThreadGet worked as it should, produced a mammoth file of the 214X-thread .
hth / MHHP
Otherwise, I petted up ThreadGet with these simple modifications as ThreadGet_214X.pet.
This 301-page thread turns into a 25 MB htm-file, which is a bit tough to open on my machine, though. Smaller number of forum pages opens nicely .
Cheers / MHHP

Barry was asking about updating glibc in wary, I didnt post my views, but did think he could so with upgrading GTK.. not but glibc!! Glad to hear yours will remain a binary compatible 'base' for puppy 5 (Cos I've stolen/installed lots of 2.14X apps, all work well)ttuuxxx wrote:Hi scottman

CPU sensor?
Hi, I just noticed a CPU temperature program, at
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=57480
I dowloaded and installed it, but it doesn't find any sensors.
Do I need a module for that to load into 2.14X TOP8 ?
When I interrupt booting and look at the BIOS setup pages, it says the CPU is at 50 degrees Celsius.
This is an ASUS P5A with AMD K6-2-450, both from about 1999.
I vaguely recall something about Winbond.
Don't know/recall how to look for it in Windows 98SE.
Many thanks,
Sheldon

214x-Top8.0 ISO, after burning to CD and upon boot says:
I had no idea all this 2.14X business was going on! Tman of Wary Tiny kindly suggested that I try Classic Pup on an old 475mHz, 128mb RAM laptop that I saved from a trashy demise. Yes, he says, Wary runs on older low-resource machines, but make a swap file and try Classic Pup! So here I am with my question. TIA.
Have I made myself a nice new coaster, or can I give it the name of another kernel image at the boot: prompt? It will take input, so maybe another name...my box wrote:Unknown keyword in config file.

Would this failed-boot msg come from booting from the CD (through BIOS), or from utilising other boot managers/utilities?

Yes, thank you. The old laptop BIOS is set-up to boot from CDROM. Raffy's Safe Pup from 2007 will boot to X from CD, as will a SliTaz 3.0 base {no X). But it choked as described on 214x-Top8.0, which was a good burn as tested on more a recent box.MinHundHettePerro wrote:Hello !

Is a failure to boot of this type indicative of a certain problem? TIA.

Perhaps you could boot a working linux system, mount the 214X-top8 CD and check that the isolinux.cfg looks like
Code: Select all
default puppy
display boot.msg
F1 boot.msg
F2 f2
F3 f3
prompt 1
label puppy
kernel vmlinuz
append root=/dev/ram0 initrd=initrd.gz loglevel=3 PMEDIA=idecd max_loop=20

MHHPThanks! I did look at isolinux.config earlier, and it looked good. And 214x-Top8.0 did boot on another, different box.
May be... the CD was a successful burn as evidenced by a successful boot on a different machine. Thanks for your interest. I'll report any new developments.MHHP wrote:(could, obviously, be that you have a quirky machine for running 214X, but .....)

any use for gflashplayer (the standalone gtk1 version that is only 1277k and uses <8m RAM)
there are no pages that link to it anymore, so I can't find out if it is redistributable, so you will need an internet connection (the pinstall.sh script downloads it and puts the necessary bits in place) to get it, but after that you can play your flash games browserless on your old 486
I made a symlink for the libstdc++ that it asks for based on the wary libs(but it should be portable)
usage:
gflashplayer /usr/share/examples/vector-images/omelette.swf
or use the menu entry - it can select files
I can play most of the games on pupweb.org with sound & either online or offline
edit: dug through the wayback machine to find this mozplugger entry to use it in a browser (if you use flash7 as just a plugin, it can kill the browser, this may provide a sort-of sandbox)
application/x-shockwave-flash:swf:Flash animation
swallow(Macromedia Flash Player 6): /usr/bin/gflashplayer "$file"
syntax may likely have changed since 2003 though

MHHP, it's a mystery why 214x-Top8.0 won't boot on that old laptop. With same CD, I've booted into my desktop machine to type this update, IOW, I'm using 214x-Top8 right now.
So odd that it would fail on the laptop with such a specific complaint. Oh well, thanks again for your help and thanks to ttuuxxx et al for Classic Pup.
