Slacko B5
IBM Thinkpad test
Hi Mick
Thought it was time to try slacko B5 on my ancient IBM Thinkpad laptop.
Good news is - it works fine except I had problems getting the Neomagic driver to work. If I did probe then I got the vesa driver. So I specifically chose the Neomagic driver. There are no diagnostics to report as xwin just never produced a display - it just sat for a bit and then went to command prompt #
As I had been able to boot correctly to the desktop on Exprimo I decided to copy the xorg.conf file across from Exprimo and this then worked fine in slacko. I can pm you the xorg.conf file if that is useful.
Cheers

Suspend menu item?
Hi Mick
A small request / suggestion....
As slacko b5 contains /etc/acpi/actions/suspend.sh which works great (as an alternative to closing the laptop lid)....
Would it be possible to add a "Suspend" entry into the Shutdown menu?
Thanks

Hi Mick,
I've tried to use your pets2sfs in slacko B5. I placed the pets that I wanted to convert in a directory called pets and executedThe result was a pets-1.sfs file that is empty. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jim

Slacko B5 systems report
Live media use of SLACKO. System overall responsiveness very good.
Observation:
On boot (pfix-ram) system stops to request "Probe-Config-Vesa".
Question
Is there an option to bypass this to allow FirstRUN to handle this like it used to?
Observation
After Video selections, system proceeds to desktop. Once at desktop, there is a very long wait before FirstRUN (Personalize Settings) pops to desktop to allow necessary system tailoring.
Question
If a long wait is to occur normally, should there be a "Please Stand-by" message?
Observation
Did not see following reports in Menu (s)
Question
Should Report-Video-GLX and Sys-Info be in the Menu for reporting system setup and behavior?
A system report is attached for observation.
Hope this helps

Hi 01micko & All,
After checking that I had not installed into Beta4 any pets effected by Beta5's installation, did a simple upgrade to Beta5, to wit: while in Lupu deleted Beta4's boot files and unpacked Beta5's boot files into Slacko directory, preserving my SaveFile. Rebooted into Slacko Beta5. All was well except minor inconvenience of again having to remove unwanted desktop icons.
I do like the GTK rockstar theme.
01micko -- you'll have to stop doing such a great job or we users will grow to expect it and be disappointed on rare occasions.
Not exactly a criticism, just a source of temporary confusion I hadn't mentioned. In Beta4 (continued in Beta5) you changed the icon used by "show desktop" on the tray. At first I didn't realize what was there, thinking I now had 3 virtual desktops and no "show desktop" on the tray. When I figured it out, I tried to change the icon, but it wouldn't accept a "png" file --'though I could use a png file when adding "Snapshot" to the tray. Perhaps I did something wrong?
I've attached my wallpaper for others who prefer natural to abstract. Puppy is my only concession to the canine world as I am a "cat person," ergo "Slacker Cat." Don't know who I stole it from.

auto connect to internet - did not work on boot of full install, however, did work on boot of live cd - strange
seamonkey-2.4 = ok
setup printer = ok
shutdown and rebooted = no problems on shutdown - reboot clean
added pets from my save partition and have not encountered any problems at this point.
Working great for me.

Java in SLACKO
I have already reported on QuickPET issue in its Menu.
Here's an issue with PPM to add JAVA to SLACKO. The problem is easy installation issues because of the dependency requirement.
It would be nice to know how I should proceed to install JAVA in Slacko. Here's what happened to JRE.

Just made a frugal install of B5 and have the following observations (hope some of it may help):
1. No need any more for acpi=force in Grub nor 01micko's acpi.pet to make a shutdown. Good news.
2. Installed Opera from slickpet but it isn't seen in the Change Browser Default menu selection.
3. And installing Browser-default from slickpet still suggests it's to be found other than where it is ie in Utility.
4. Trivial typo in slickpet
5. I understand the reason why 01Micko doesn't want to put dependancies in slickpet (chromium 15 is still there by the way) but when I tried to install Chromium 16.0.881-slacko instead from slickpet (or at DaveS's suggestion using Playdayz's version from the forum...but I think they are the same though) this time it doesn't tell me I need any dependancies but still won't run, despite appearing in the Default Browser list. From the cmd line it reports
6. And if some kind soul could look into why OOoLight.sfs (see http://download.ooolight.org/) isn't recognised in B5 but is in for example Puppy528 that would be really appreciated.
Many thanks

Hi Mick,
KDE 4.5.5 desktop, installed with PPM, still works with Slacko, although many bugs ie plasma, Shutdown and Panel items don't work.
Shutdown problem is easily corrected by installing radky's PupShutdown, others are more difficult to correct. Hopefully, someone will develop a fully operational KDE 4.5.5 sfs after Slacko is final. However, not I since that's way above my skill level.
Cheers,
Jim

In other news....
Barry has fixed the shutdown bug ... those adventurous enough .. try it. I'm outa here in 2 hours. (I can hear the fishies calling).

My file system is behaving erratically
At the moment I have saved a txt file in root, that is saving but not appearing.
There are other instances - this was not happening in B4
The file was a system report from this excellent system reporting pet

Also from Barrys blog - New JWM could be tested . . .
