Dpup Exprimo 5.X.9 -- Wireless networking
Hi pemasu & all,
Dpup Exprimo 5.X.9, manual install. Working fine with the following exception:
I first tried to set up wireless networking using Simple Network Setup. Although it saw my router, it was unable to establish a connection. Tried 4 times. I had more success with the network wizard, once I ignored the "unable to find a network -- or words to that effect" and clicked dhcp anyway. That put me on the web. But it did not survive reboot. Installed Frisbee and have not had any problems since.
I have noted that on Puplets based on iguleder's scripts/build --Exprimo x9, Guydog, Next--Simple Network Setup appears not to be as functional as previously. I can't chalk this up to "its just my computer" as I've noted it on two different computers. Has something changed?
Also regarding "Has something changed?" previously once wireless settings were established, on reboot establishment of wireless connection would automatically take place. Under Exprimo x9, it doesn't. The icon on the traybar has to be clicked to initiate the establishment of a wireless connection. I'm not complaining. I think that its a good security measure (especially as Exprimo x9 ships without firewallstate installed and activated). I just don't recall whether this was intended.

About Firewall. I have Firewall app in Menu > Network. Also there is /etc/init.d/firewall script which has Iguleders firewall script content, posted in this forum earlier.
Just make that script executable and it will be activated at every boot up.
Intended ? Yes, including firewall was intended.
Installing Frisbee ? I had Frisbee preinstalled. Also I have in Menu > Network Frisbee enable-disable gui app.
About wireless apps. Yeah, I have SNS, old network wizard, and Frisbee. I suppose that is one too much. That is why I have included Frisbee Manager to disable-enable it. The gui and script made by stu90. Problems with SNS might be fixed by disabling Frisbee and rebooting.
"Has something changed?" Sure it has. Every build uses latest woof, many packages will be updated for next build, base uses debian squeeze. All the mentioned builds are dpups. In good and bad. Fortunately they belongs to the puppy family. That I am proud of....
I am sure Exprimo is not for everyone. But hopefully someone finds this build useful. Anyway it is my main OS now. And my wireless connection is autodetected at every boot.

Exprimo (5X8 or 5X9) is on four laptops, one netbook and soon on another, here ... all detect and connect and remember wireless connections.
CPU usage seems a little high ... otherwise all is well ... still chasing the CUPS-share thing ...

Tried on two different laptops and a netbook, all with Exprimo 5X9, none can see the "Shared" printer(s).rcrsn51 wrote:You are missing a step. Go to the main CUPS Administration screen and look in the Server section. Check the box "Share printers connected to this system".edoc wrote:No. Even though the "Shared" box is checked I see that it says "Not Shared"
Now the printers should show as "Shared" and should be visible across your network. When you open a client machine, you may need to wait a bit before it detects the shared printers.
Odd ...

Another ... very minor anomaly ...
The 5X9 Puppy Linux Addict background shows on my netbook but the 5X8 Exprimo remains on my laptop - even though I have upgraded it to 5X9.
What might cause that, please?

A small suggestion; Could the default setting for .rar files be set to open them in Xarchiver? I find it odd that this is not the default setting, as this is how it is done on every other Puppy derivative I have used, as well as being the default setting for zip files...
I apologize if this has already been adressed, but 82 pages is a bit too much reading even for me...

Warrior522. This is coincidence. I havent had much time to read books. But yesterday I unpacked one rar compressed book and I am reading it now with fbreader. I noticed that .rar is not associated. I will look into it.
It is just one of those mishaps I didnt know. I will fix it. It was not intentional.
Thank you of the report.
Anyway....if you right click the .rar packages there are fileroller and open with Xarchive to uncompress it. So something is working.

Pemasu's Useful Pups
Hi Pemasu:
My wireless problems may have been caused by:
(a) Router required resetting -- it gets clogged from time to time and slows to a crawl. I reset it only after I first tried to set up Exprimo 5x9.
(b) Having been frustrated by SNS's unexpected failure to establish connection, I probably didn't spend as much time as I should have wading through the menus.
I'm among those who find your pups useful. Although I explore other puppys and puplets trying to be as helpful as I can be with my limited knowledge to the devs, Exprimo smp is the OS I primarily use on my quod-core desktop, and Midnight pup is the only OS I regularly used on my Thinkpad T42.
And, if I haven't said it recently, thanks for your efforts.

I fixed the pupzip to recognize .rar extensions.
Fixed pupzip will be installed from the attached pet.
