How to use Secondlife viewer on Puppy

#1 Post by shinobar »

I am enjoying Secondlife on Puppy. http://secondlife.com/
This is a note on the Secondlife viewer running under Puppy Linux.

HARDWARE AND DRIVER
The Secondlife viewer for Linux runs only with nVidia graphics cards.
You need nVidia commercial driver. You may need open GL and SDL.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=72405
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=58810
You must set the color depth to 24(not 16) at the X configuration.

PUPPY VERSION AND THE VIEWERS VERSION
The Secondlife viewer 3.x runs on Puppy 5.x.
http://secondlife.com/support/downloads/
On Puppy 4.x, the Secondlife viewer 1.2.3 runs.
http://download.cloud.secondlife.com/Se ... 62.tar.bz2
As for the Racy beta2, 3.0.7 kernel with the nVidia driver 285-06.09 is unstable for me (GeForce-8800GX).

CACHE AND LOGS
The Secondlife viewer takes cache on /root/.secondlife, which consumes pupsave so much,500MB as the default.
The log is written in /tmp/xerrs.log if it is run from ROX-Filer, it is also pretty large.
Follow next steps to prevent these pupsave/RAM consumption(Assuming you have puppy frugal installed).
  1. Make directory /mnt/home/secondlife.
  2. Make a symlink of /mnt/home/secondlife as /root/secondlife.
  3. Rename /root/secondlife to /root/.secondlife.
  4. Download the Secondlife viewer tarball into the /mnt/home/secondlife and extract it there.
  5. Find the executable script 'secondlife' in the extracted directory, and make a symlink of the 'secondlife' as /root/my-applications/bin/secondlife.
  6. Launch a virtual terminal and type 'secondlife'.
STREAMING MEDIA
The streaming music and media are available on Wary 5.2 with gstreamer-0.10.35-w5.sfs .
For Lucid, try gstreamer-0.10.35-lucid.sfs .
Slaco and Dpup can use gstreamer0.10-2-slacko.sfs.

VOICE CHAT
Requires pulseaudio. I have never tried.

Making animation

#3 Post by shinobar »

Avimator is an animation creator for Scondlife.
avimator-0.4.1.pet from http://shino.pos.to/party/bridge.cgi?puppy/opt/
Works on Puppy 4.3.1 and may also work on Puppy 5.x.
You also need http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/freeglut3 as for lucid puppy.

I could not build QAvimator: http://www.qavimator.org/

Phoenix viewer and non-nvidia driver also works.

#5 Post by hitchup »

The phoenix viewer also works under Lucid Puppy.
Other video drivers can work. I think as long as the video driver matches the underlying hardware, as opposed to a general purpose driver, there is a reasonable chance of it working,

If streaming audio doesn't work. Download the 373 version and copy the gstreamer shared library for this earlier version.
