Help make searching uncluttered and open source

#1 Post by tasmod »

A new search engine site is hoping to grow. It's called YaCy

It's based on Open Source ideals.

There's a report on the BBC news sitehere

The search web page is here.

It's overloaded at the moment but will pop up if you retry a few times.
YaCy (pronounced "Ya See") is supported by the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) which campaigns on digital rights and tries to help people control their own digital destiny.

There's also Sphinx. I'm not sure if it is the same thing exactly but it looks like it might replace the present forum Search and it is open source. (Thanks, Aitch. :) )

If web privacy is your major concern try DuckDuckGo which is now default search engine for Opera and Linux Mint :

Classic Opera 12.16 browser SFS package for Precise, Slacko, Racy, Wary, Lucid, etc availablehere :)

Yacy is great. But wont run as root. So I edited the startYacy.sh script, to disable the check. Now there are other wired java errors in /DATA/LOG/yacyXX.log such as

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Could not initialize class net.yacy.cora.protocol.http.HTTPClient

Could someone please check?? I try to run Yacy for some time now.

This would be a great improvement for PUPPY. Freedom of information is a crucial thing for us all.
