How to use Nvidia Geforce 4 in Slacko?

#1 Post by erdosain9 »

Hi.
How do I install the drivers for my card?
I'm using the latest version: Slacko.
That's it.

Thank you very much!
This is an ugly google translation

You can compile your own driver as follows:

1. Download the devx and kernel source sfs files and place them in /mnt/home.

2. Run the boot manager in the setup wizard to have them loaded on the next reboot, then reboot.

3. Download the proprietary driver for your graphics card here.

4. Logout to the prompt and switch to the directory that the driver was downloaded to and execute

Code: Select all

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-270.41.19.run
(substitute your downloaded driver)

5. When it's finished compiling run xorgwizard and choose the nvidia driver and set the resolution, back at the prompt enter "xwin" to get back to the desktop.

NOTE: If your distribution has the nouveau driver, it must be removed, otherwise your compile will fail. Slacko has an executable file that may be executed in a console that will remove it.

Code: Select all

nouveau_unload

Hey.
Thank you very much but:
1 - How do I do this: "Download the kernel source sfs DevX and files"?
2 - "Download the proprietary driver for your graphics card here" can not find the driver for the Nvidia Geforce4 mx 440 ...

On the other hand I'm pretty novice ...

But hey, can not even find the driver on the Nvidia page ... Can it be that is not there?

Greetings and thank you very much

Hello erdosain9

Open the PPM (Puppy Package Manager)
and type nvidia into the search box (where it say's Find:)
then hit the Go button.

It should list the available drivers. (see pic)

As your graphics card is a GeForce4 MX 440, you will need the 96.xx.xx version driver. (for example: 96.43.20)

If there isn't one listed, the you will need to build your own (as explained by Jim1911 above)

Seeing as you did not provide us with the exact version of your Slacko,
i can only give you a link to where you may find the devx and kernel source files for most of the latest versions.

For the nvidia file, you can get it here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-ia32-96.43.20-driver.html

Hope this helps

There should be a menu entry: Possibly under System or Setup
called NVIDIA X Server Settings

If the nvidia driver in being used, you should get a window open
that looks like that in the image below.
