Just came across this article, I had never seen this online magazine before, but if their story is true, we would all be well advised to remove anything-Google out of our daily lives!

google keeping up the information grab,

they've even said they want to scan gmail emails for key words and phases - so they can direct adds at you!

to make matters worse scroogle has been scrood ; -(

Practically, what would be the best way to stay away from all things google?
It's easy not to use google docs, etc, it's easy to replace google-search with duckduckgo, it's not easy to replace youtube, but how to replace gmail?

Edit: has the time for Freenet finally arrived?

Maybe some people, like Google, think it is evil not to exploit people and situations for the purpose of making a profit.

With a little work and free technology on our parts, we can virtually disappear to Google.

In my case, I think I hardly exist to them. The exception being the YouTube videos I watch. They would know me by my IP address because I haven't gone to the requisite effort to prevent them from knowing me that way.

While on the subject of IP addresses, most websites would have you believe they don't collect personal information. People who trust businesses and establishments probably believe.

If we look at how the recording and movie industries operate against individuals, they do it primarily at the onset by the IP address, boilerplate subpoenas and court orders if needed.

Armed with their attorneys they wreak havoc on the lives of many people. The IP address doesn't contain our names, but it is enough information to land us in court.

Something to think about?

Interestingly enough, a few years ago it was Yahoo! which gave info about Chinese dissidents to the PRC gov. and Google refused, now they want to know everything you do.

I've always been annoyed how people use "Google" as a verb, and I'm pretty pissed off that I can't figure out how to set my browser search engine thing to use Alta Vista (even if it is now owned by Yahoo!), although it works with other engines.

I had been looking into gmx before...according to reviews and comments from gmx users, something strange seems to be going on: long-term users are almost all happy with the service, while newer users massively complain about slowness, inability to log in, accounts being closed without warning, etc...

we.riseup.net looks promising.

Well, part of my problem is I've got nothing to hide...in a way I don't care my emails are read by Google, or my moves across the net are registered. But I do find these actions totally unethical and against the most basic human rights. On top of this it now seems a very real danger to personal freedom and safety is created, given the connections between Google and political and military forces.

How to hide an IP address? Is using slow proxy-servers the only way?

In a way it's a good thing Google and some other giants are starting to show their true face. I hope it will awaken us.
I know I've been asleep for too long regarding Google, enjoying their products...But now they've gone too far. One of the things that alarmed me lately, was a little setting at the very bottom of "Advanced options" in Chromium/Chrome: "Keep running background applications when Chromium is closed" This option is ticked by default. You can untick, but after an upgrade, it is ticked again. Nobody explained to me what exactly these background applications are ...

Then came their new "terms of use" few weeks ago, that was clearly in breach of European law.

Now this news... enough!

That's funny...I also installed ixquick as default search engine last night!
It's even better than DuckDuckGo (more precise + images/video search) and automatically presents itself in my language. Nice.

Paypal can be terrible. I once wanted to send a donation to someone in Ukraine. It was refused by Paypal. I protested and much later they replied with one sentence: "Payments to Ukraine are not possible, however payments from Ukraine are allowed."

I did a post about duckduckgo on puppylinux.info....it wasn't good news, but I can't remember the link.....it followed the announcement that LinuxMint made it the default search engine
It was a thread that got destroyed by being derailed after some misinterpretation

It's still gaining popularity despite the bad? news...something to do with privacy....?

Ixquick seems to need more search engines...it seems a bit dated, but does say it doesn't keep personal data after 48hrs

I often used scroogle, which just seemed to put an anonymiser between me and google

Dillo uses it as default. Review:

A quick update..

I am now Google-free for two days

1. Closed my Google account
2. Replaced Chromium with Firefox 11.
3. New email with zoho.com (very nice!)
4. Learned how to block all cookies. (except the few I need or I like, like John Murga

)
5. Replaced Google-search with Startpage (from ixquick)

Any other tips or trics most welcome!

Still have to find out two things:

- how to point "mailto" to mail.zoho.com
- how to get rid of google search in the FF address bar ( the search bar is okay)

Everything is well, off for a beer -as in freedom-
