OK. It will be a few days though. I haven't done it since the Get Libre is installed in Lucid's menu and it could always be updated but what you say makes sense.Any chance you could upload the most recent libreoffice .sfs file (maybe the last stable 3.4+ or the new 3.5 version) to the ibiblio repos for lucid? While 01micko has created the get office pet, it is advised that we not attempt to run it on a USB install. The libreoffice version in the repos (3.3.1) has not been updated in over a year, and for many, this office suite is becoming a crucial bit of work. I know it's here or there on the forum, perhaps, but it's always nice to have it in the "official" channel. If possible, thanks so much.

Libre Office 3.5.1
Fast download -> http://diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/Libre ... n_US-2.sfs
Ibiblio -> ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet ... n_us-2.sfs
This is the latest Libre Office--the same as the Get Libre Office menu item downloads. There was a bug in the first version posted a few hours ago--the printeradmin menu item was wrong. I took the opportunity to have the Libre programs open without displaying the logo because I think that is slightly faster.
Here is a pet that will integrate LibreOffice as the default word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, and draw programs. It will do two things: 1) the desktop icons will open LibreOffice programs and 2) clicking files with appropriate extensions/mime types will open LibreOffice programs (such as .docx will open Libre Writer). Of course, LibreOffice must be installed.

Abiword RTF
This makes Abiword default to saving in RTF format instead of abw. The reason is that once too often Abiword saved a file in abw and then refused to open it.
This works with the Abiword 2.8.6 that is default in Lucid (which is still the official stable release of Abiword).
After applying the pet there should be a file named /usr/share/abiword-2.8/system. profile, and it should contain DefaultSaveFormat=".rtf" (By changing the DefaultSaveFormat=".rtf" to DefaultSaveFormat=".doc" it is possible to have Abiword save by default in doc format.)

That's weird majorfoo. I just retested on a fresh boot. Did you restart Abiword after applying the pet? Are you using a different language than default? Had you opened a file that was in another format? After applying the pet there should be a file named /usr/share/abiword-2.8/system. profile, and it should contain DefaultSaveFormat=".rtf" I hassled with this for a couple of hours yesterday, so I probably don't understand it all.Just tried this out - did not default to RTF on save

Problem solved - I am running Abiword-2.9.0-lucid52.pet. The Rtf pet created a Abiword 2.8 folder in /usr/share containing a single entry = system.profileplaydayz wrote:That's weird majorfoo. I changed the system.profile in Abiword 2.9 and all is well.

libreoffice 3.5.1
Playdayz,
Just downloaded and installed Libreoffice 3.5.1. Up and running with no problem - menus, etc all there. Also, the pet to integrate Libreoffice is a fine idea - can't tell you how many times I've wished for this capability.
You've made the Lucid line a stable yet responsive and evolving operating system. Thanks for everything.

Announcing Lucid Plus
Announcing Lucid Plus (formerly known as the TESTING ISO)
This is a complement to Lucid 5.2.8, not a replacement. It will exist alongside Lucid 5.2.8. It is called Lucid Plus because 1) it has 41 extra drivers (thanks to tempestuous); 2) it has extra provisions for HP printers and scanners (thanks to lluamco); 3) it has the 2 series of Pmusic plus the necessary updated multimedia components (ffmpeg). Thanks mainly to rerwin for Lucid Plus because he had the ideas for 1) and 2) and provided numerous tweaks to the infrastructure.
Should you use it? 1) If you have had any driver problems with Lucid 5.2.8.004; 2) if you have an HP printer or scanner and have had trouble configuring it; 3) if you want Lucid with the new ffmpeg and Pmusic 2.x; 4) if you want a Lucid ISO with the latest versions of the Puppy programs contributed by members of the Puppy community. Most people will tell no difference except for the additions. For some Lucid Plus will work better than Lucid 5.2.8.004, but for others Lucid Plus might not work as well. (The updated Puppy programs will be included in an upcoming Lucid 5.2.8.005.)

Abiword Help
I am trying to make the Help work in Abiword. This is what I am told on the abiword-users list. Maybe someone will get it before I do. (In Lucid there is a menu item for Abiword Help, but it would be much preferable if it worked from the program menu of course.) Add: Doing what they recommend with the browser does not seem to work--I am afraid it has to do with gnomevfs.
My question:
I am trying to make the Help work in Abiword. This is what I am told on the abiword-users list. Maybe someone will get it before I do. (In Lucid there is a menu item for Abiword Help, but it would be much preferable if it worked from the program menu of course.) Add: Doing what they recommend with the browser does not seem to work--I am afraid it has to do with gnomevfs.
My question:
The answer:The items in the Help Menu start "your default browser" to display the help. How is that accomplished? I ask because it does not work for me. If I start Abiword in a terminal I get the message 'Warning: Operation Not Supported' when I click the Help menu -> Help Contents. This is in Puppy Linux which is not standard in many ways--to get the Help working in one program, I needed a file named 'sensible-browser' to start the default browser. Thanks for any help.
In the first instance abiword checks the content of the "BROWSER" environment variable to search for prefered installed web browser. If this is not set it then itterates through a list optential browsers and looks for each on the users system. The first one it finds it uses to open the help page. The list is:
"sensible-browser", /* debian */
"epiphany", /* primary gnome */
"galeon", /* secondary gnome */
"encompass",
"firefox",
"mozilla-firebird",
"mozilla",
"netscape",
"konqueror",
"xterm -e w3m",
"xterm -e lynx",
"xterm -e links"
If it fails to find any of these give up and you get the error you see.
That is the fallback. In there there gnomevfs of gvfs (build time dependency, the later is likely present on any recent Gtk 2 build) then it will use that and likely launch the browser defined.

Abiword Help
radky found that technosaurus had dealt with the problem of the missing Help.
Possibility: There is a configure option "--without-gnomevfs" which mght help, just a guess. I don't think gnomevfs is fully enabled in Lucid. I am trying in 4.3.1 at the moment.
Nope. Abiword 2.8.6 compiled in 4.3.1 without gnomevfs, but the Help was still broken.
The AW 2.8.2 that technosaurus made has the same broken Help when run in Lucid.

The Help did work in 4.3.1 Abiword 2.6.3.In 2010, Technosaurus described similar problems with Abiword's inability to call Help resources through an external browser. The following links may be of some value. Smile

Abiword
Playdayz,
May I suggest using your valuable time to find a replacement for AbiWord rather than fixing it? I have wondered for years why it is still in Puppy, I have had problems with it scrambling files, and I seem to recall Barry expressing dissatisfaction with it in his blog sometime ago.
Personally I would prefer Textmaker, but I understand it is not open-source. But there must be some small wordprocessor out there that will handle .doc and .rtf (like it or not we need to open and save Microsoft Office files).

Unfortunately, i don't think there is. I have been trying to save in rtf or doc in Abiword instead of the abw format, because also for me AW has saved files in abw and then refused to open them. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 584#613584...a replacement for AbiWord rather than fixing it? Yes, unfortunately no doc.I once spent some time looking at Ted. It struck me as being a better basic word processor than Abiword. The problem is that it only works with RTF format and not DOC.
So LibreOffice for anyone who really needs a serious word processor with functioning Help. Or for people who really need to do business, Microsoft Word with Crossover.
Here is a good comparison of word processors.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Abiword Help
I am pretty sure the problem with AW Help is that something is missing in Lucid and probably other Woof-built puppies, because the Portable Linux App of AW 2.8.6 has the same problem, which suggest the problem is not with the way AW is compiled in Puppy. http://portablelinuxapps.org/office/abiword
