Todays Tip
Guys
We have all been through trying to burn an ISO and install a Linux OS.
Some of us never went to Puppy School
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/PuppySchool
We went through a different command line
. . . well OK I try and avoid the command line
Todays tip - Rock on with Rox

Maybe this is not really a tip as such - but I recently discovered that the "prtsc" key on my keyboard works in Slacko. In other puppies I have tried this key just did nothing - I normally have to go into the graphics menu and look for a screenshot function.
Probably there are some other puppies with working prtsc keys too? Worth a try. It is such a handy function.
EDIT:
Prtsc key also works out of the box on:
- SolidPup 5.1.1TINT2
http://www.smokey01.com/Tman/SolidPup51 ... -Tint2.iso
- Saluki
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=73687
..and further down this thread check out Monsie's comment about making the prtsc key work in other puppies...

It turns out that the "PrtScr" key will work in other Puppies, and in conjunction with mtPaint too... --speaking of mtPaint.greengeek wrote:Maybe this is not really a tip as such - but I recently discovered that the "prtsc" key on my keyboard works in Slacko. First, see the post by jamesbond in the fatdog thread over here which explains the issue with the keycodes for this dual purpose key, and how to fix it.
Then, -->./jwm (hidden directory) and edit jwmrc-personal to include the following line in the <!-- Key bindings --> section:
Code: Select all
<Key keycode="111">exec:mtpaintsnapshot.sh</Key>
I have this (PrtScr) working in Wary Puppy 5.3

Recently, I discovered (accidentally) another way to get at my command history in the terminal... and that is to use the "arrow-up" ↑ key while I have the terminal open. It functions sort of like a Backspace key (like when I want to go to previously viewed web pages) as it cycles backward one command at a time until I get to where and what I want. Once I've started cycling through my history, then I can use the "arrow-down" ↓ key to move forward again if need be.This is also useful for pasting in previously used commands within a session --especially if I do not have a middle button on my mouse.
I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but I'm sure it must be documented somewhere....

I think the tips from stu90 and myself about accessing the terminal command history are useful bits of info that could be included in your How To section re: the Command Line. That said, I don't know the protocol regarding making entries on your page, deciding exactly what goes on it, etc.

Make use of any unused multimedia keys.
If you are using JWM & have spare mm keys that do nothing when pressed:
File to be edited /root/.jwm/jwmrc-personal (hidden file)
Add to key bindings section.
EXAMPLES - modify as you see fit.
1. Launch puppy forum index in browser. (Favorites key)
2. Open/close CD drive. (Play/Pause key)
3. Restart X
Notes:
Replace chromium with the appropriate command if you use another browser - look in
"defaultbrowser" or just try substituting "defaultbrowser" which works with chromium.
If the above does not work check keycodes as yours may differ from mine.
To check:
A. Open a urxvt terminal, type xev & press enter
B. Briefly press & release the desired mm key.
C. Use the keycode that appears in the two events (press&release)

Learn to use Rox
http://youtu.be/uakVLQvK6LU
If some of the tutorial looks wobbly it is because I have used Google enhancements to stabilise and brighten the video. I probably took that with a phone whilst using a keyboard and mouse and rambling
Rox is a Puppy gem, originally developed for Riscos (which is being developed once again to run on Raspberry Pi)

Todays Tip
Hi all,
Sometimes an application does not include an icon for the executable file. Usually one searches for a suitable icon, a png file, then right-clicks on the executable to select Set Icon then drags and drops the png file into place... done.
Did you know that Puppy will also accept Windows icons... the files with the ico extension? I discovered this fact "by accident" earlier today. The particular package had an icon to set, but it was in ico format only.
Whether intended or not, this "feature" could come in handy the odd time when one is looking for that perfect icon to highlight a program.
