Thanks, I'll give that a go, but could you tell me how I type the location of a file within a mounted SFS because "/mnt/+downloadsfolder+hurrican_sfs4.sfs/usr/bin/hurrican" doesn't work and I don't know how to enter its location correctly in the terminal.Eldon wrote:Try running it from the terminal and see if you get error messages.liro wrote:Sorry if this is a stupid question, but how do I get this game to start? I'm using Slacko 5.3.3 and if I mount the SFS then click on the /usr/bin/hurrican file, nothing happens...
Cheers
Since the SFS is mounted, just open a terminal and enter
(assuming that's the correct location of the binary).
Alternately, you can probably have /usr/bin/ open in your file manager (Rox? I don't know if Slacko still uses Rox... ), press "~", and just enter "hurrican" (without the quotes, of course).
Code: Select all
/usr/bin/hurrican

Liro, have you loaded the .sfs file or have you mounted it by simply clicking on it?liro wrote:"/mnt/+downloadsfolder+hurrican_sfs4.sfs/usr/bin/hurricans"
Because there's a big difference.
.sfs files have to be loaded to work properly - the easiest way is to right-click on a file and choose sfs_load option.
Mounting is usefull if you'd like to, for instance, convert such a file to a .pet or just see what files are inside.
And don't forget to install appropriate drivers for your graphics card, as 666philb has mentioned in the opening post.
@Makoto: Yes, Slacko 5.3.3 still uses Rox.
@666philb: Thanks for the game; I remember this one from C64 (Turrican).

Thanks SFR & Makoto. I didn't know about the sfs_load option until now. So I got the program to start, but although I can hear the music I just get an unmovable black X window, weird resolution, no key response and have to reboot... which is the same thing that happened when I tried to use the ZSNES emulator on Slacko (although it worked, albeit slowly, on Wary). It must be a graphics driver issue, but I couldn't be bothered looking into it now, so I'll save this game for some other time (looks good anyway ).
Try the terminal for both those programs. They might mention what the issue is.
Do you have SDL installed, by the way?

Last time I played this game, it was on Lucid, before I switched to Slacko...8-bit wrote:Failed to 640x480x16 video mode: X11 driver not configured with OpenGL
I've got the same error now...
But I think I've found a workaround; here's what I've done:
1. Installed sdl-1.2.14 from slackware-13.37-official repo in PPM.
(direct link: http://slackware.cs.utah.edu/pub/slackw ... i486-5.txz)
Thanks to that, the previous error message gone.
2. Installed Mesa drivers (+ restarted X server).
Still no joy...I ended up with Liro's "unmovable black window".
3. Reduced screen resolution from my native 1366x768 to 800x600 (lowest available).
Success! Game starts in fullscreen and is fully playable.
4. Then, for certainty, I installed ATI drivers for my card, reduced res. to 800x600...and "black window" again...
5. But then I reduced screen res. to the lowest available, which was 640x480 this time...and succeeded again!
Hope it'll work with Nvidia too...
Greetings!

I think it's a JWM bug with Slacko guys. Use icewm from the repo or compile the latest JWM. I'll upload a package soon...
OR
test out the latest Slacko beta, JWM bugfixed and includes full SDL and mesa. (see the projects forum )
edit:
NOPE! JWM can't handle it, use icewm

Confirmed with Openbox - the resolution doesn't need to be reduced anymore.
But that specific sdl package is still needed.
Thanks Mick.

With Slacko 5.3.3, the sdl pet installed, nvidia driver installed, and dropping to prompt and restarting with "xwin openbox", the game starts.
But the full screen is oversize as it overlaps the edges and also the game screen is black.
So is this now a matter of getting and installing the ice window manager?
BTW, sound works, but black game screen.

Hey 8-bit
The symptoms you write about suggest that JWM may still be in use, somehow..?
FYI: I've installed openbox_obconf-2.10 package (+ fbpanel-spup-1.03 as a dependency) from the main Slacko repo in PPM.
With IceWM too the game works ok for me, by the way.
As a last resort you could try the trick with resolution...
Hope this helps.

That seems like it was the case. I installed openbox window manager and that worked.
But now I just have to remember how to install the driver for my MS sidewinder USB gamepad.
It has been a while since I last did that and I honestly cannot remember how to or where I put the files needed.
Again though, I do not know if one can use a joystick with Hurrican.
Under controls, all I see is the keyboard listed.

I am trying to figure out all the keyboard controls and key combinations needed in this game and a lot of them say to press some key that is shown as (') or (") in the controls section and I am having problems trying to figure out what keys I can use.
I could use a key utility with my microsoft sidewinder USB gamepad, but I do not know if the game supports gamepads and joysticks either.
It is very hard to play a game that one does not know the keys for.
I know that "A" is walk left, "D" is walk right, "S" is crouch, RETURN is fire, and SPACE is jump.
But after that, I am lost.
Any help with a short text file I could refer to in learning the keys to control the player and his actions, weapons, game save, game load, etc. would be a great help.
The game site is partially in english and that does not help me.
