There is also one here that is 28mb: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=79077

But you'll probably have to also download another 34MB pet of library files to get this 28MB Skype going.sheepy wrote:There is also one here that is 28mb: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=79077
Re: skype 4
Nah, bro, the executable itself takes up the whole package, surprisingly! The package is mostly documentation, whereas the large executable is in /usr/bin. I have not experienced any libs that needed to be fetched for this package.Shep wrote:But you'll probably have to also download another 34MB pet of library files to get this 28MB Skype going.sheepy wrote:There is also one here that is 28mb: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=79077
Re: skype 4
I have. There were 4 or 5 missing libs, and I got them in that 34MB pet. This is for Dpup Exprimo, YMMV.sheepy wrote:Nah, bro, the executable itself takes up the whole package, surprisingly! Re: skype 4
I had an earlier version of Skype that worked fine on Wary and Slacko. I tried this one but when I click on any contact, the conversation box automatically appears at the very top of the page with its top bar pushed off the screen. Due to this it's not possible to adjust its position or even close it without killing the box which then makes Skype crash. I should add that I'm using a laptop with a 1024 x 768 resolution. I wonder if anyone has had this problem?666philb wrote:skype 4

Re: skype 4
Are you sure about that? What happens if you hold down the LEFT ALT key while depressing the left mouse button on any neutral location inside that box? Alternatively, does that window have its own entry at the foot of your screen? If so, another way to move that window: right click in the line at the foot of your screen, select Move, and slide the mouseliro wrote:I tried this one but when I click on any contact, the conversation box automatically appears at the very top of the page with its top bar pushed off the screen. Hi
I mainly use frugal installs, and this is how i do things.
Now i can use the same Skype (and profile etc)
in any other frugal installs i have/make
simply by symlinking it from the directories in /mnt/home

.
I mainly use frugal installs, and this is how i do things.
- 1. Download this: http://download.skype.com/linux/skype_static-4.0.0.8.tar.bz2 (39MB, unpacks to 47MB)
and unpack it in /mnt/home
which results in this: /mnt/home/skype_staticQT-4.0.0.8
2. Using two ROX-Filer windows,
one at /mnt/home and the other at /usr/share
Now Drag 'n' Drop /mnt/home/skype_staticQT-4.0.0.8
into /usr/share
Select Link (absolute)
then rename the directory /usr/share/skype_staticQT-4.0.0.8 to /usr/share/skype
3. Using two ROX-Filer windows,
one at /usr/share/skype the other at /usr/local/bin (or /usr/bin if that's what you prefer)
Now Drag 'n' Drop the binary file /usr/share/skype/skype
into /usr/local/bin (or /usr/bin if that's what you prefer)
Select Link (absolute)
Change the ROX-Filer window at /usr/local/bin
to /usr/share/applications
Now Drag 'n' Drop /usr/share/skype/skype.desktop
into /usr/share/applications
Select Link (absolute)
4. Right click on /usr/share/skype/skype.desktop
and select: Open as text
Change line 5
from this:to this:Code: Select all
Icon=skype.png
Save the change, then open a console/terminalCode: Select all
Icon=/usr/share/skype/icons/SkypeBlue_48x48.png
and enter this:then restart the window manager (JWM whatever)Code: Select all
fixmenus
You should now have a menu entry (under 'Network' in Slacko),
that's pretty much it really, though personally i go one step further.
- 5. (Optional)
Fire up Skype, and set it up as you normally would,
then exit Skype.
You should now have the following directory: /root/.Skype (set ROX to show hidden files)
this directory contains your Skype user profile (amongst other things),
so i Copy it into /mnt/home
and rename it to: /mnt/home/.Skype4008
Next i delete the original directory: /root/.Skype
then Drag 'n' Drop /mnt/home/.Skype4008
into /root
Select Link (absolute)
then rename the link as .Skype
Now i can use the same Skype (and profile etc)

Re: Issue with 28MB pet
I expect you'll find that you are missing 4 files, but you can install them using this 34MB pet: qt-4.8.0-basic-with-qtwebkit-dpup.petgrowler wrote:#/usr/bin/skype
/usr/bin/skype: error while loading shared libraries: libQtDBus.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I think I got my copy here: http://www.smokey01.com/pemasu/QT-4.8.0 ... t-dpup.pet
But it may be easier(?) to use the static build endorsed by CatDude.
To find out whether your /usr/bin/skype binary is missing some essential files, open a terminal and type:
ldd /usr/bin/skype
and you'll see of any missing libs indicated.
Re: skype 4
Yep you're right, or at least when you know what you're doing :P. Thanks for that, the LEFT ALT solution works fine =).Shep wrote:Are you sure about that? I'm a bit late to this party...however.
Just installed the 40mb .pet file linked above and it's worked fine, however, I am having a hard time getting my webcams to work at all. They show up as blank, black boxes in the Skype options and I can't get them to display at all in Skype whatsoever.
I have tested both with Guvcview and they work fine there...?
Any ideas?

Hello darkstrike,
I have 3 USB webcams, all of which work in guvcview and Linphone but only 1 of them works in Skype so it seems to be a bit of a case of some do and some don't.
One thing to mention is that with the one that does work, if I go into the options menu and tick the "enable video" box the image will not appear in the black test area straight away. I have to apply the changes then quit and restart Skype and then when I go into options again the image in the test area works.

if your camera works in guvcview there's a work'a'round.....
1. start guvcview and get your cam showing.
2. in skype 'right click' on you contact you want to call and choose 'share your screen'
3 choose 'share selection' and draw a rectangle around guvciew
yay .. your contact can see you

Hi guys, thanks for the replies!
Both webcams are older Logitech Quickcams, however, one's a slightly newer model with a built in microphone. I'm also trying to find a way to use the mic built into the webcam as well (the mic in the cam works in Guvcview as well btw, but I can't get it to work in Skype when I select it in the options.)
At least I can use the cams now with that workaround...I'm running Puppy 5.28 005 btw!
I actually had known about that workaround before but forgot about it until now - would prefer if I didn't have to use it, but c'est la vie!

have you checked with an actual call if your cam works? as i had a cam that wouldn't show in the 'skype options' but other people could see it

Yup, I have - nothing even comes up on the screen...you click the "Turn On Video" button on your end and nothing happens, not even a black box where the video should appear. You click the button and it literally seems to do nothing and the rest of the call (audio-wise) continues as normal. Screen-sharing like you mentioned works fine though...?
Skpe static
I followed CatDude's instructions to the letter after having downloaded the static from the link provided on the skype.com web-site - now running skype I get:
I am on racy 5.3
Code: Select all
#skype: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.11' not found (required by skype)
hi growler, the latest skype doesn't work on racy or wary, here's an older version that should work http://www.mediafire.com/file/76f990w6a ... 1.0.47.pet
