gtk-youtube-viewer (for lots of pups)
Hi greengeek, greengeek wrote:Awesome work philb. Very useful. Is there a way to save to somewhere other than root? I found a really long vid I would like to download and don't want to run out of space in the savefile. Thanks for this, it's a great program. (I'm using the wary version on SolidPupTINT2)
You can change download locations by going - File > Preferences > then look for - 'downloads_folder' => '/root'
Just change the location between the single quotes and then > Apply.
Thanks for this app

Can a wish come true
I know this is a bit of a long shot, but is there any possibility of a version for Puppy-412. Or how to make one of the existing versions work in Puppy-412.

hi tuxtoo,
i'll have a go at it this week sometime. the hardest thing in getting it to work is installing gtk2perl and it's dependences. once you have that the other perl dependencies are usually quite easy to install using cpan.

Is one's email address and password required by the application?
I am not sure I like that aspect of the application.
I normally use my gmail address to see movies that require one to log in and I am kept logged in.
But I cannot seem to get past that email-address password windows to connect to YouTube.
I am interested in basically getting one free movie that seems to be related to the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
And then only because my internet connection is too slow to view the movie without major pauses when the download to the buffer is not keeping up with the playback speed.
And my 1.5mbs connection speed is often slower than even that due to line degradation.

hi 8bit
yes if you want to log in, you'll need to use a gmail account (same as on the youtube site)
Note: that login doesn't work on the slacko version but it does work on the lucid, precise & akita versions (not sure about wary)
i may have a go at fixing the slacko version at some point.

In YouTUbe, on the login screen, there is an option to stay logged in.
I had previously set that.
Anyway, I typed in a search option, "free movies" and pressed return.
I got a display of movies then and after stumbling once, I clicked on information on the movie I wanted and then download.
But.....
I stopped the download when I realized it defaulted to downloading to the /root directory and into my pupsave area.
This is not a good thing as a YouTube video can quickly fill and overflow one's pupsave file and maybe destroy it in the process.
So I brought up settings and changed the destination to an area outside of my pupsave, aka, /mnt/home/videos.
I got the file downloaded. It was a 90 minute movie and took 8.5 hours to download at 1.5mbs which is the best speed I can get with my connection and often even lower speed.
But now, I can watch the movie without major pauses for buffer refill and out and out dead stops with no recovery apparent.
I envy those that have fast internet connections!
Anyway, It is working fine for me in Slacko 5.3.3 frugal install with a 512 meg pupsave file.
Just remember to check and change your destination as necessary to preserve your pupsave file.

Hi 666philb,
Thanks in advance for taking the time to have a go at making Gtk-Youtube-Viewer available for Puppy-412. Your time and help is much appreciated.

I have noticed not just in GTK-youtube-viewer but other youtube downloaders as well that youtube seem to throttle downloads to around 100KB's so they take quite abit of time to download - in GTK-youtube-viewer you can change the resolution in the bottom right corner lowering it will make the download files not as large - i find 360p is adequate on my laptop screen.
