Enable Cisco Aironet 802.11 a/b/g PCMCIA wireless - Wary 5.3
Greetings all,
I have a Gateway Solo 9100 that I am trying to customize Puppy on (still tinkering with Wary and Retro Precise).
Just received a Cisco Aironet 802.11 a/b/g PCMCIA card (part number AIR-CB21AG-A-K9). I plugged the card in to the slot, and nothing happens at all.
Now, I just received the card yesterday and I am stumped. I know my PCMCIA slots work (I have 2), as I have a modem that works on both of these slots without any problems (and tested it in Puppy). My system does meet at least the minimum requirements that Cisco needs (32-bit Cardbus slot - check! - 300 MHz processor - I have 400 MHz, they need 128 MB RAM, I have 384 MB, and a ton of HDD space).
I know Puppy Wary 5.3 can load the "driver" for this in the connect utility. I've seen it. And when I loaded it, nothing happens.
I've checked everywhere, even in BIOS to see if there is some power management settings I could change - nothing.
Is there a type of - pardon the Windows reference - "Device Manager" I can check?
I also tried the card in another laptop (Dell Inspiron 2200 running XP SP3) - works fine.
Any ideas???
Thanks!

Read this at Newegg selling that part number you listed
What does lscpi show?
What does uname -r show.
Your thread title threw me off. I would change it to
So next question I guess is what Puppy version are you running?Pros: I needed to find a newer PCMCIA card for an older laptop in order to connect to a WPA2 encrypted network, and this gets the job done nicely. (May need latest drivers for WPA2 support, see cons)
Works great with CentOS 6.2 Linux - kernel has driver pre-installed
Site Survey Utility for Windows works well
Compatible with rare 802.11 "a" networks
Cons: Cisco won't let you download drivers unless you have a service contract with them; buying the hardware is not sufficient reason to have drivers in their eyes. The driver disk in the retail box is pretty old (v2.1). I had to download the latest Windows driver (v4.5) from an offshore "repository".
Other Thoughts: These cards were sold in bulk to hospitals, schools, etc. Thus, there is a glut of them on the secondary market now and new ones can be found for a fraction of original price.

rokytnji,
Thanks for the response - title changed per your suggestion. I'm using Wary 5.3.
lspci and uname -r are shown as a screen shot. Also, shown in the screen shot is the Load a network module, where the Cisco module is highlighted (gray).
Please let me know if you have any more ideas. Like I said my PCMCIA modem works fine.
Thanks!

Thanks for the response - I'm still a noob at this. Sorry if I'm not understanding you correctly. Maybe there's a power setting that can be adjusted - maybe the PCMCIA slot isn't getting enough power? It does work in another laptop running WinXP.
I take it this is what you mean below (I hope). FYI, I did have the card in during boot up.
In HardInfo, under PCI devices, I attached a screen shot.
AS far as pupscan goes under "yenta_socket" - this is what's showing:

My bad I guess getting you not to understand what screenshot should give.
This is my Belkin F5D7010 .ver 6 pcmcia card . PupScan is what you need to look at for wireless chip.
That is my pcmcia card. Screeny by what I mean below.

Ok, I'll just cut and paste here. Please let me know if you have any other ideas (both my modem and CIsco PCMCIA card are plugged in, and Puppy can detect the modem via PupDial). Using PupScan, when I hit PCI interfaces I get:
When I hit USB interfaces, I get:

Your pcmcia card is not showing up. Maybe it is not seating correctly, Try the other slot. Through the whole thread. I did not want to mention that I was not seeing any pcmcia card plugged in. I figured I would make sure first you were
inserting it before powering up and booting into wary.
I don't have any experience with wary. I do know if you want to download modules. You will probably have to hook up a etherent cable to get the module to load. But once a module loads. A reboot is sometimes required for
it to take. Running Live. Without a save file. You lose that module loaded
after a reboot. I hope you understand me,
I gotta go for awhile. Hopefully someone else with this card you have can chime in on this thread.
Happy Trails and Good luck with it, Rok
