HD set as read only. How to prevent? [solved]

#1 Post by nooby »

Edit. I got a tip from several that I could
change value in xorg.conf and it had 50MS
and I changed it to 100ms and that helped much.

so I set it as solved. thanls

The mouse most likely are sending glitches
when I clicked for to mount the sda1
then the glitch somehow set sda1 to read only.
how can I prevent this from happening?

It helps to reboot but there must be a better way?

What I try now is to hold index finger down and release slowly
that hopefully will prevent the mechanics of the mouse to send
these fast glitches.

Puppy uses ntfs-3g to mount ntfs windows partitions read-write . ntfs-3g in Puppy-4.3.x worked for me perfectly , somewhere in Lupu Puppy things seem to start to get worse due to newer versions of ntfs-3g ...

There is also the normal standard kernel driver that only mounts read-only .

The /bin/mount is a script that tries to manage the different kernel and user-space drivers like ntfs-3g .

Noobs better not look into this script since it is a little messy . :P

I should have explained myself better
but I am too wordy as is :)

I am in Slacko next to latest version but with Firefox
I click on the icon on left corner once but a glitch
in the mechanical switch make it send two click
and that seems to set it to read only.

I have no idea why it do this. Okay change mouse but
that is not what I really want. It us the best mouse I have
and the others I have make my hand ache. Them not good
ergomically. To take the mouse apart to fix the click clean
may be risky.

So hope somebody can come up with good advice.

Can I mount the sda1 using keyboard command or
to use tab and that way activate it to something like that.
Terminal and write mount sda1 or some such?

If it's mounted read-only you might remount it.

Code: Select all

mount -o remount,rw /mnt/sdx

Just tested it on Macpup-Foxy-3 (PL-4.3) and worked to remount ro and it refused to copy something onto it and rw it copied using the terminal .

Must say that I had heavily hacked /bin/mount to dynamically create a /mnt/directory so it needs no /etc/fstab file containing filesystem features and lots of other things .

I don't dare to recreate it again
just to see if the suggested solutions works

So maybe the best approach is to figure out
how to not end up in that situation ever again?

That is why I asked if one can start a Rox
with sda1 without using the mouse?

so either I do this mount sda1 then each time?

What is the shortest such the one here is for to repair
what is it that one normally do?

Thanks for that suggestion. I promise to use it if it happen again.

I have changed the title and tried to edit the wordings so it
better reflect what really did happen? Not knowing I can only guess.

My current approach is to always treat that sda1 icon
as if it is an egg under my foot and to thread lightly :)

So what would you suggest for to prevent it to happen again?

Did you apply those permissions? Were they different from mine or the same?

I took a look now and it look like you had it too.
But AFAIK it restored to that by itself when I rebooted
after posting the thread entry.
What I want it to find a way for it to never happen again

You can open the menu with alt&F1. This brings up the Puppy menu, Rox-Filer is under filesystems. You can also open it from the termainal, the command is rox.

I still can't imagine the cause of your problem. A mystery!

Thanks for you suggestion
Way back in time say 1986? MsDOS one could tab on all things
and it walked a loop from thing to to thing? That way no need for mouse?
Sorry my crazy English

Yes but then I would need to mount it first and then start rox.
Very many click so my current solution is less cumbersome
I hold the finger down long enough for the glitches to subside
and then release it and that have worked well so far

But I wish there where some other way maybe it does not exist?

You can also mount it with a terminal or access pmount through the menu.

kurtdriver what am I supposed to write in terminal?
starhawk it says A4 Tech model OP 620 most likely
a rather cheap one but it is the only one that does not
hurt my fingers. The other three I have they have other shape
that makes my fingers ache. And the others too fast and that
make me need to click many times for to set it slower.

Basically you mount a drive with

Code: Select all

mount "some device" "some place"
In puppy,

Code: Select all

mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1
If the partition is called something else substitute that for sda.

You're quite welcome Nooby. I should add that while the mount command requires that you specify a partition to mount, you're really mounting a filesystem. Mounting a filesystem justs adds it to the hierarchy's tree.
