Newbie taking first crack at puppy here.
Downloaded 2.10 iso, burned live cd, and booted successfully. Selected Xorg and managed to muddle through up to the appearance of a 'normal' desktop.
I had several minor problems with puppy failing to diagnose my laptop's (Compaq Presario 1500) hardware but I managed to sleepwalk through workable selections in all cases but one: Early on I was prompted to select a keyboard layout or whatever it is called. Having no clue as to what to go for, I let the default selection (first in the list) stand. It wasn't the correct choice as several keys produce characters other than the expected (e.g. stricking 'A' produces 'Q' on screen, etc.). How can I remedy the situation?
The keyboard layout I use with the indigenous WinXP installation is 'us english.'
How to tell which keyboard layout to choose?
The first entry is azerty, so it's normal you have 'strange' effects.
Go to menu|setup|mouse/keyboard setup and you are presented again with the keyboard selection panel.
Choose the us keyboard and follow further instruction.
(Maybe a restart X, maybe a reboot)
All should be ok then.
Success.

Well, gentlemen this was very fast indeed!
The fact that I am posting this by using puppy, is sufficient testimony to the success of the remedies proposed. So much so indeed that taking heart from this success I mustered enough courage to tackle the 'other' significant issue that cropped up, i.e., configuring my internet connection. A lot is still to be done but so far so good with a BIG thanks going to both of you for this!!!
