On installing p 5.5 over previous version sound worked - until reboot.
Alsa Wizard failed and continued to do so even after pfix=clean and pfix=purge. I tried pulling the soundcard and using mobo sound - no go, The only solution was to rename everything out of reach, do a fresh install then copy over the stuff I wanted to keep.
Throughout alsaconf failed with the message:
/usr/bin/alsaconf line 723: 21662 Aborted
Line 723 looks harmless to me but perhaps someone who knows sound cards will see something - what's going on?
Processor : Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz
Memory : 1001MB (260MB used)
-Multimedia-
Audio Adapter : ALS4000 - Avance Logic ALS4000
Audio Adapter : MPU-401 UART - MPU-401 UART
Audio Adapter : VIA8233 - VIA 8235
It's the ALS4000 that now works.
Cheerio,
alsaconf line723: 21662 aborted

What do the following two commands return:
aplay -l
lsmod | grep snd
# aplay -l

But as sound output -is- now working (see above) this might not be very useful. I mostly posted in case the error report assisted in the more general problem.
Input is scruffy - not too bothered 'though.
Cheerio,
