Unable to shutdown/restart puppy lucid
Unable to shutdown/restart puppy lucid
I have this problem with two seperate installs of lucid 528. One install is full and the other a frugal install booting from my puppy cd. How can I solve this problem. When this happens I always have to do a hard restart of my computers ( I hate doing this).
I remember there is an update or fix in the Lucid 528 update thread in Puppy Projects forum.
Aren't you using 528-004 or 005? I thought it was fixed there.
LazY Puppy is 528-004 based and I haven't got any problems on shutdown or reboot.

wmreboot
wmpoweroff
busybox poweroff
busybox reboot
Have been written about quite a lot in these forums should you care to perform a search.
Busybox is likely to work in cases where the shutdown scripts lockup due to system read write or other errors.
All the options should at least be preferable to pressing a switch on a computer.
Unable to shutdown/restart puppy lucid
How often ? Sometimes, every second boot, 90% of the time ?When this happens
Does it not close down the Xserver ?
Does it run /etc/rc.d/rc.shutdown ?
Does it just halt at the very end, refusing to completely poweroff the PowerSupplyUnit or hangs in the black/whilte kernel console when rebooting ?
With the frugal install I would try to boot with the pfix=nox parameter and manually run xorgwizard to recreate xorg.conf .
For the full install you need to put
into /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit
at the end before
/tmp/bootcnt.txt is a marker file for /etc/profile .
If it exists, X does not start automatically .
So you can add nox at the end of the kernel line of grub menu.lst .
For the full install you need to put
Code: Select all
if [ -n "`cat /proc/cmdline | grep -i 'nox'`" ]; then
touch /tmp/bootcnt.txt
fi
at the end before
lines .#that's it. next stop is /etc/profile...
###END###
/tmp/bootcnt.txt is a marker file for /etc/profile .
If it exists, X does not start automatically .
So you can add nox at the end of the kernel line of grub menu.lst .
Here is a report of my computer.

Would reboot -f work? I believe this does a force reboot. I'm not at my computer
at the moment to try this out.
According to my system , /sbin/reboot is this short script
Code: Select all
#!/bin/sh
/etc/rc.d/rc.shutdown
exec /bin/busybox reboot
This kind of issue may or not be part of your problem. You could try manually running the /etc/rc.d/rc.shutdown script at the command prompt and see if that works.
You could also see if umount -ar works. The shutdown scripts run this command to attempt to flush all the mounted filesystems and set them read only prior to poweroff/reboot. Note that umount -ar may render your system unusable because there will not be too many writeable filesystems left, which why a command like that is typically run before a reboot. But at least a successful "umount -ar" command would tend to indicate that it is not a failed umount or sync that is causing the problem.
I dont know whether this kind of matter is at issue in your case. It could alternatively be an Xorg or some other kind of problem etc as you have already been advised.
Same problem of shutdown with lucid THD
Shutdown does not operate. It was sudden, but permanent now. I got back to prompt and then everything runs ok.
Puppy is not made for full install. Everybody now use full install because using a compact disk is boring. I agree on that. But working with USB sticks is fast enough and prevent a lot of problems.
In fact, when you have a Puppy distro on yr hard disk, boot is routed automatically to it.
Nevertheless, my Lucid does not want any more to shutdown using the menu.
I Added pdev1=sdb1 in rooting but nothing better.
But once arrived at prompt, no problem, save and reboot are ok. Strange, very strange.
Eureka ! Please use this pet !
