ok I loaded the kernel source SFS too...now both the kernel source and the DEVX are loaded at every boot.

when I load the wrapper now I get the following.

first, the unhelpful little blank box which says nothing has been replaced by a box which seems much more helpful and is actually a box I recognize from past experiences using ndiswrapper...

it says ...
wg311v3 : driver installed
device (11AB:1FAA) present
a quick click on "OK" promptly reveals the following in a different X-dialog-ish box featuring a red error-circle with a line through it that says...
Loading ndiswrapper failed with the following message
FATAL: module ndiswrapper not found
maybe try a different driver?
Funny thing to me in all of this is this....no matter which driver I load, wg311v3 or WG311v3, each and every time, it says "wg311v3 loaded", not ever "WG311v3". Now I know that you know the difference between them, aid I also know that I know the difference, but does the shell know the difference between wg311v3 and WG311v3?

So there is that. also the ndiswrapper while I am loading the driver with the wizard informs me at some point in the process that vista drivers are not supported. I checked and I am only using 32 and 64 bit XP drivers, so im left scratching my head because the drivers seem good and the ndiswrapper now gives me an adequate help message when i type "ndiswrapper -h".

you tell me. Im way out of my depth here.

Besides the gold fireman icon that completely gives it away, the only people I ever thank more than a dozen times as a matter of habit and due course are firemen and my bride.

even if we cannot get it figured out, I appreciate the effort smokey01! thanks again, at the risk of sounding repetitive...

I'm not sure what wizard you are talking about?

This would be a lot easier on Psip aka PuppyPhone. Do you know it?

in fat dog, if one right clicks on the swirly/not swirly B&W icon thing, it gives you options. left clicking simply opens the scanner and adapter selector dialog, but right clicking gives one options.

One of those options is "Network Wizard"

it looks like the
'Classic Network wizard' enhanced by Dougal and others, enhanced for both wired and wireless connectivity, with more features than pwireless (supports use of NDISWrapper for Windows wireless drivers for example)
featured on Lucid and many other puppies I have had in the past. I have two options in Lucid...the 'Classic" referenced above and the "Simple network setup by BarryK"

the wizard I find by right clicking the swirly thing is identical to the "Classic' network wizard.

Does that answer your question?

I also used the command line too.

Im no stranger to the command line.

I tried ndiswrapper -i /root/spot/Downloads/wg311v3_ndis/WG311v3.INF
i -r the whole thing and tried to -i /path/to/wg311v3.inf instead.

then i ndiswrapper -r path/to/wg311v3.inf and then again ndiswrapper -i path/to/WG311v3.INF

I used the wisard AND the command line.

neither avenue gave me joy...

each time the message to confirm said "module wg311v3 loaded".

never ever did it say WG311v3...

A couple of things to try.

After installing the driver with ndiswrapper can you see it listed when you type lsusb? If yes then try below.

When left mouse clicking on the wireless network icon you should get a wpa_gui. It should find your adapter automatically. Press scan to find networks. Double click on the network you want to connect to.

That should be it, if it's working.

Try renaming WG311v3.INF to wg311v3.inf and trying again.

Run the ndiswrapper from the command line in the same directory as the driver after renaming it to lowercase. Just a hunch.

Code: Select all

ndiswrapper -i wg311v3.inf

One of the best strategies I use when using Linux is to buy hardware than is known to work with Linux. This can save a lot of heartache.

For example: a Netgear WN111v2 works great with all versions of Puppy I have tried, including Fatdog.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Netgear-Wire ... 0929839350

Quite cheap too, now.

ive always had lots of luck with this adapter.

before now....

ok from the top.

lsusb lists nothing. I have no usb hardware present on my machine.

lsmod lists lots of stuff, none of which looks like my driver. I would have been happy to copy the list and paste it into a text file, but copy does not seem to be a function that the terminal window in fatdog has. control+v, right clicking, no matter what I do, I cannot copy the data from the terminal window?

what a pain in the butt! so the terminal window DID give us some data for lsmod, but who knows what it was and how can I ever show you if I cannot copy it? am I supposed to write all that numbers and nonsense down and try to repeat it back verbatim?

the wpa_gui opens as you say, but no adapter is shown...so no networks are shown either. I get two options, both of them are blank.

i changed the name of the driver from WG311v3 to wg311v3 and when i tried to reload it it gave me an error and said it was already loaded...

so I renamed it wg31v3 and then it loaded.

it didnt do anything, same as before. but it loaded again.

could I be doing something wrong? its always something silly and obvious when its this hard with puppy....perhaps it really is the nut behind the wheel after all?

:D

try lspci -vnn

It might also be worth rebooting after you loaded the driver with ndiswrapper then see if it shows up in wpa_gui.

I have found another driver that might be worth trying, although it might not be 64 bit.

lspci -vnn gives me about 3 pages of information...

I ask again...what magic wand does one have to wave to get copy and paste to work in the terminal?

i saw my device listed in the mass of data...nothing in it was akin to an error message...it was 6 or 7 long lines of code I am happy to repost here if you could be so kind as to enlighten me as to how I can relay the information without scribbling each one and zero down onto a piece of paper and then retyping it. I can make this computer work using lucid and this equipment, so I just brought the lucid puppy disk with me this time in the hopes that I can just copy and paste it into a file on the pc then swap the operating systems and use this machine to give you the results...

Cheers and thanks again....!

Here's how I do it [if I remember right]:
a. Highlight the text in the terminal window.
i.e. Left-click to place the cursor in a suitable place, then hold the left button, then drag the cursor to highlight, then release the left button.
The text should remain highlighted.

b. Then go to where you want that text pasted...
Position the cursor where you want the text to go, then...
Press&release either:
The mouse scroll-wheel [this is how I do it]...
Or...
Both the left&right mouse buttons.

Oops, smokey01 got there 1st.

This is the interesting bit.

I don't see 802.11n only g, that's a bit of a worry. The other problem is only 32-bit is mentioned, not 64-bit.

I wish companies like Netgear would just release the source code so we could compile our own drivers. They are restricting their own trade.
