Fresh clean install of 5.6
Installed hplip-3.11.10
Run: chmod 700 /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb

Now... will that 'keep' or do we need to do blacklist stuff ?

Assuming that your clean install:
1. Did NOT include a previous savefile.
2. Did NOT install the above patch.
3. Did NOT run the "rmmod" command.
Then there is nothing to blacklist.
However, I have no idea why your clean install would require a different set of permissions on /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb than my clean install, or on previous Slacko versions.
Since we have no other test reports to go on, I am leaving this issue until Mick releases his next version.

You assumed correct!
We'll wait for next build.

Since the term "alpha" generically means an early test release , "slacko-5.6 alpha" merely means an early test release of Slacko.anikin wrote:ALPHASlacko, THINSlacko, FATSlacko ...
Looks like a good naming pattern to me.
Yep, it should be part of the name, why not.
ALPHA, applied to the right thing, can sound pretty good.
When I first saw this thread, I thought it was a joint venture.

Mplayer not playing DTV
G'day 01micko,
Just a minor glitch in this latest Slacko for me.
All is good so far except when I tried to watch ABC4Kids with grandchildren on my knees (or any other digital TV through my card & roof-top aerial when they are not around), all I get is a short audio burst and brief black screen.
Mplayer does play video and audio, but just not live dTV.
Other Slackos and Pups have mplayers that do dTV very well so I was surprised with this one, even if it's only alpha.
I tried running dTV on mplayer via a console and got a message as it failed but I do not know how to copy the console text so I've done a screen grab with the text message displayed (the last bits anyway).
Thanks for your slackoness,
David S.

David,
I had a problem with mplayer too on my old IBM ThinkPad, with a similar error about cpu, so I compiled it on that and it works on that and my faster gear. Sorry, I can't test tuners, haven't got one. Please let me know if the linked package works for you.

compiling question
to 01micko: can you make a list of programs that ware compiled directly in current slacko. the answer may be redirection to wiki with woof (sorry haven't tested it yet), but you mentiond that some apps were draged to current form previous slackos. would be nice to have a look at a list of apps with tags for exampe: s14=slackware repo, s5.5(maybe earlier)=compiled in earlier slackos, a=current(alpha or something like that), w(wary for example) and so on. suppose would be a good idea to keep such list as an attachment, for example, in the head of the topic. thanks in advance.

An easy cross check can be done from ~/.packages/woof-installed-packages with each of the repos that exists in ~/.packages. That way you know what comes from where. There is only a couple of packages that were wrongly dragged in, abiword and osmo. I have just recompiled osmo with smaller fonts to suit 96dpi and offered the patch upstream to Barry. As for abiword, well I intend to recompile the latest (albeit unstable) 2.9.4. I dislike abiword but there isn't much small alternative except for say Ted, but that is even more limited.

Can you post the latest Ptiming-1.0.0 please as russoodles repo is still down. TIA.

G'day 01micko,

Tried copying over the mplayer (in /usr/bin) from slacko-5.5 which does play dTV but same result with alpha 5.5.67.I had a problem with mplayer too on my old IBM ThinkPad, with a similar error about cpu, so I compiled it on that and it works on that and my faster gear. Re: dTV on mplayer - test .pet
It will be the kernel module crashing. Output from dmesg may be useful.davids45 wrote:G'day 01micko,

Next version will have k3.4.5x (similar to 5.5) so hopefully will work.

Hi 01micko,Next version will have k3.4.5x (similar to 5.5) so hopefully will work.
This one is the fastest, coolest and smoothest of all the Slackos I've tested on my eeepc (Intel atom n270/945GSE). It even feels faster than ThinSlacko. With every release, these new 3.x.x.x kernels are getting friendlier to atom processors. I'm frustrated by your decision to downgrade the kernel. And it's surprising that you have already made up your mind at this very early stage, when the testing has barely started. Really frustrated and disappointed. No peace in the valley ... deep sigh.

Slacko-5.6 alpha does not currently contain the wl.ko driver so if your chip needs this it isn't currently supported
look in output from dmesg to see which driver is being used and if any problems are being reported.

Applied your patches plus the "wlan" patch and compiled successfully - resulting pet available here
tlchost - if you need the wl driver, load the pet and then reboot.
you may also need to unblock your wifi:
Code: Select all
rfkill unblock wlan
