Cannot download Chrome browser
Cannot download Chrome browser
I'm running Slacko 5.4. I want to download and install GoogleChrome/Chrome web browser, and I can't. It shows up in repositories but cannot be retrieved from them.
Any help that you may offer will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. Searching for Chromium does give more options, but none of them will download. They are seen in the repositories but will not download. If I test the URLs they're all disabled and marked "no recursion" or something similar.
The reason that I wish to download Chromium is because it has a built in Flash Player. The Opera browser on your own site and the Firefox which is the default browser on 5.4 (and also my personal favourite) have perpetual "Flash Player crashed" problems.
I like Puppy, but not having a browser with a functioning Flash Player is frustrating beyond belief.

Version 11.x of Flashplayer has problems with some hardware. Have you tried the 10.3.x version with Opera/Firefox? I have one for download at
http://terryphillips.org.uk/puppylinux/ ... 183.19.pet
Chromium (unlike Google Chrome) does not have a built-in Flashplayer so that would not solve your problem.

Hello again Terryphi and thanks for your continued interest in this matter.
I tried your link to the older version of flashplayer three times and it returned Error 404 Page Not Found on each occasion.
I tried to download Google Chrome and received the same URL error each time when testing - "Remote file exists and could contain further links but recursion is disabled - not retrieving".
I've received this message whenever trying to download, Chrome and or Chromium.

Derek Wa:
Sorry, there was a typo in the link in my post above (now corrected). Try downloading the flashplayer pet again. When downloaded click on it to install. Make sure you have backed up your savefile first.
See If that fixes your Opera/Firefox flash problem after a reboot.

I am not an expert in wget but I think this is a normal "error" message when merely testing a download location with wget (which Puppy Package Manager uses.) Just download it.

Hello Derek Wa,
You are welcome to give this Google Chrome a try. It is already as .PET or .SFS so easy to install and all set up to run in Puppy. Download it from Datafilehost - use the grey "Download" button. If you see a larger "Download Now" button it is an ad so ignore it.
In Slacko you will also need to install the libgconf2 .PET
Google Chrome 27.0.1453.110 .SFS
download = http://www1.datafilehost.com/d/f2ebffa2

OR, if you prefer it sizzling hot, straight out of the DEV channel, test drive Version 30:-
Google Chrome 30.0.1573.2 .SFS
download = http://www.datafilehost.com/d/0f2e17d4

Tested briefly in Slacko 5.5 and seems to run a little sweeter. Not sure about the Pepper Flash Player but Slacko has a Version 10 included, you can always go to chrome://plugins and disable one or the other or install the latest Flash Player 10 or 11.2

Unfortunately, it doesn't download correctly for me. Both Seamonkey and opera claim the download is complete after around 200 KB's.

Ardvark,
Are you making sure you use the smaller grey button marked "Download" on the left of centre of the page? As I said, do not be distracted by the larger, bolder "Download Now" button. That is some sort of an advert and not the direct download link and whatever it tries to download is about 200 - 300 KB in size.
