Downloaded and installed (Grub4Dos frugal on SDD) on my core 2 duo i915 video iwlwifi PAE laptop. Basically installed ok, video driver and resolution correct, wifi connection with frisbee correct, overall running ok with a couple of 1.0 nits. Leafpad is uninstalled but the package manager sees it as still installed, hence won't install it. I use it for some system files, see : http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=88778
For some reason, at idle, independent of cpu governor installed or powermode chosen, the kernel? gvfs? ? is chewing up enough cpu cycles to keep the fan on continuously. Not so in x-precise either PAE or non-PAE or alphaOS etc. Haven't installed straight slacko 5.6 so I don't know if that does. May try that. For now, x-precise ahead on overall smoothness with a clear nod to the package manager in x-slacko.
Just my initial quick look.
Edit: Installed carolina leafpad pet ok for use in setting up and checking governor parameters. Apples to apples comparison for cpu use at idle. Same computer, identical setup, identical governor and powerstate. Both are PAE OS.
x-precise 2.1.1 1.5% cpu, 70Mb memory used.
x-slacko 1.0 6.5% cpu, 87Mb memory used.
Kernel? Different thunar? The 1.5% on this laptop is more in line with other pups with relatively new kernels.

Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

Both precise and slacko do this (pre-X) and I can't find where ppm is getting this info from. I removed every instance of "leafpad" in the .packages files and it still comes up as installed. Although, I just tried leafpad from ppm and it did install.Marv wrote:Leafpad is uninstalled but the package manager sees it as still installed, hence won't install it.
I'll try both slacko and X on my lappy today and do a comparison. For some reason, at idle, independent of cpu governor installed or powermode chosen, the kernel? gvfs? ? is chewing up enough cpu cycles to keep the fan on continuously. On my desktop with Pentium Dual-Core E5700 @ 3GHz and 2GB RAM
X-slacko-1.0 - 3-5% CPU and 64MB RAM at idle
X-precise-2.1.1 - 1-3% CPU and 63MB RAM
Carolina-1.0 - 1-2% CPU and 81MB RAM

@Marv
Tried X-slacko on my dual core pae lappy and it seems the same as with windows, fan stays on low speed.
Tried X-slacko-non-pae on my pentium M-1.5, fan starts on high then throttles to low and eventually shuts off at idle.

Hi rg66,
I scrummaged about in .packages etc. too and found no traces of leafpad. I'll test the non-PAE x-slacko when it's out. I don't see any double display of drives when mounted in thunar 1.6.2 in x-precise 2.11. Am I mislooking? Or is it something with precise core vs wary/slacko cores? Thanks for taking the time to look at cpu use. In x-precise on one of the Pentium M now. Just does what it should

Must be some ppm issue listing removed apps as installed. I'm stumped as to were it gets this info from.
Not sure why precise doesn't double up the drives in thunar-1.6.2 when mounted, that and the fact that simple file sharing can add an emblem with it were the reasons for updating. Both slacko and lina do the double drive thing and it can get a bit messy if you have lots of partitions.

I've decided to upload a non-pae delta for testing (22MB), you will need the X-slacko-1.0.iso first.

non-PAE delta downloaded, non-PAE iso created. All md5sums correct. non-PAE installed in core 2 duo P8600 laptop (using x-slacko 1.0 PAE savefile with no observed problems). CPU at idle on this laptop 3.5%, 67Mb used. Better fan control than the PAE (off at idle).
I'll use the non-PAE x-slacko alongside x-precise and see how it goes from here.
Thanks,

Some testing of X-slacko-1.0 non-pae.
First attempt on my main Athlon XP box w/ old Nvidia card resulted in XFCE not starting, I forget the error message though.
Second attempt on my P3 test box w/ onboard Intel graphics resulted in the same, XFCE wouldn't start.
Third attempt, everything is working on a newer box.
When I get time I'll try again on the older hardware and get the error message.

Does slacko 5.6 work on these older machines? I didn't redo X-non-pae from the slacko-non-pae ISO, I just did a kernel swap from the non-pae ISO and it's initrd.gzJames C wrote:Some testing of X-slacko-1.0 non-pae.

I have an Athlon XP-1600/K7S5A and Intel P4/i845 here with 3 old Nvidia cards. I'll try and do a few tests today.

Yes, Slacko 5.6 works and is installed on both older boxes. X-Slacko (non PAE)
Dell Demension 3000
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
RAM: 764MB
X-Slacko (non PAE) installed well and works great on all functions I use my computer for.
Printer, WiFi etc., setups went smooth without any issues.
One major problem Hmmm... wife likes to play online Solitaire (and she's good at it and very fast completing a game of Double Klondyke in average of 7-minutes wow, takes me average 17-minutes) Anyway the problem here is (Foxfire browser- if she moves to fast sometimes, it jumps back to the homepage, 'all by itself.')
So far with all programs I used and installed, not a problem one!!!

PS: X-Precise does NOT have this problem in Firefox (if that's any help?)
