pcmanfm -- pcman file-manager by jejy69
Hi All,
I ran a "Well-minded" search for a recent version of pcman and couldn't find one. Using the search term "pcmanfm" didn't appear to be any more successful except that it listed the wikka first. The wikka provided a link to the group of pets jejy69 created by dissembling his Lxpup. Among those is his pcmanfm pet. The following is a direct link to the relevant part of his posts:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 2a2#648834.
I recommend you read the entire thread. It's only one page. pcmanfm in its present form is not a substitute for rox (or thunar); and it appears that at a minimum, to be useful at all, you should also install the gnome icon pack, available from vicmz's Openbox Plus thread: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 906#703730.
With that addition, pcmanfm presents a nice dual-pane file-manager.

What is this "9.10" version? Pcmanfm is currently still in the 1.x series. I guess it is 0.9.10. But I thought the 0.x series stopped at 0.6.something. I guess it is the "new" pcmanfm, but an "alpha" release, before it reached official "release" status? The wikka provided a link to the group of pets jejy69 created by dissembling his Lxpup
Nonsense. Pcmanfm in its present form is fantastic. But it really needs a full gvfs stack. And try a version that is actually up to date.pcmanfm in its present form is not a substitute for rox (or thunar)
Can't we reserve that term for filers which actually have two panes where you can manage files, like emelfm2, rather than filers with just one plus a tree view like windows explorer? With that addition, pcmanfm presents a nice dual-pane file-manager.

Current pcman pet as file-manager, emphasis "pet"
Hi disciple,
You probably know more than I. My post had the purpose of bringing pcman out of the obscurity resultant from its merely appearing somewhere on our disorganized forum. I have no knowledge of pcman other than as the pet compiled by jejy69, and as noted below. I didn't name that pet. I didn't even extensively test the pcman pet under all conditions --i.e. absence of rox, thunar, lxpanel, xfce and so on. My suggestion that it appears to be limited is based on playdaz post where he indicated that some of its functionality depended upon lxde. http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 692#675692.
Addendum: Just clicked the link you provided. It's to peebee's LxPup-by-SFS (LXDE) thread. I tried his SFSes. They work fine. I don't recall why I prefer vicmz's Openbox Plus + lxpanel. Either way, however, I can't say that playdaz was in error concluding that pcman was in some way dependent on lxde for full functionality. I just tried spaceFm_0.8.5 under x-precise, which uses Xfce & thunar, and it worked fine. Unfortunately, that's the pet for which I can't locate a repo. Don't know if 0.7.1 from Carolina's repo would work as well or at all.

What it actually depends on is dbus being started "properly". Unfortunately because dbus is started "properly" in most distros (which are oriented around the major desktop environments), people using those distros just don't have any problems, and as a result it doesn't seem to be well documented. My suggestion that it appears to be limited is based on playdaz post where he indicated that some of its functionality depended upon lxde

Clarifying pcmanfm's "dependency"
Hi disciple,
Thanks for clearing it up. As I've said often, I'm just a tinkerer and know little about how Puppys actually work. I depend on people like you who have that knowledge. Most of my posts on this sub-forum are for the purpose of helping others locate useful applications so that the hard work of that application's developer isn't overlooked. As I don't possess technical expertise, if a problem or limitation was reported I figure its better to provide a caution than not. Just as I figure it is better that someone looking for applications providing specific functions find them than not.

Give

a try mikesir. Brought to you by ignorantguru.

You can always unistall if you don't like it. I like it better
than pcmanfm. But I probably like different brands of icecream
than everybody else also.

I agree with rokytnji
Hi rokytnji,
I agree. I added a post to this thread, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 569#726569 with a link to my review. As of the date of this post, the spacefm maintainers have published version 0.8.7 and rg66 used that to create a pet. That pet is fully functional in precise, x-precise,raring, slacko, saluki, carolina, probably others.
Ice Cream: http://www.haagendazs.com/Products/Product/2902: Caution, Once you've had it, it will be very difficult to find a substitute as enjoyable.

If anybody wants to try a later version of pcmanfm on its own, this link downloads the version currently (25-sep-13) in LxPup-by-SFS:
pcmanfm-1.1.2-1-i686
It does work on its own, but it does need a full icon set and it needs pup-volume-monitor and gvfs if you want it to detect and mount removable devices and for the trash can and applications to work.
If anybody wants any other of Jejy69's pets that have been updated then let me know and I'll upload them.
Cheers

PCMan file manages as well as ROX-Filer ?
No, sure. But i prefer it to Thunar. Each one can choose the File Manager he likes. Better, worse, it's not a competition.
My choice is ROX-Filer.
But XFCE distro BOXpup 4.3.1 has PCMan. When i understood that you can only copy and past a file to transfer it, PCMan became acceptable.
SpaceFM / you dont see the title bar (or i miss something.)
