[solved] Which display driver is Puppy using, Intel or Vesa?

#1 Post by g2k »

Hi, I have a frugal install of puppy precise 5.7.1 retro on an IBM thinkpad x40 (non PAE cpu) intel 825gm/855gm graphics.

Xorgwizard displays a vesa driver I can use and an intel driver with a message (needs kms).

I choose the intel driver, and it tests and tells me to pick a resolution. I pick my correct resolution (1024x768), but all the resolutions offered are listed as being ok to work with vesa.

I figured that maybe I couldnt use the intel driver and it defaulted to vesa instead, but when I run the setup wizard from the desktop it tells me that xorg is using the intel driver and set to 1024x768 res.

So... 1) how do I get to really use the intel driver (whats kms, and how do I configure it), or is the intel driver TRULY in use already?

2) Since I have several questions about precise_retro should I ask them all in 1 thread or post several new topics?

Thanks, in advance, for all the help.

You could check the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and look for the driver section...it will list the driver in use.

If a media player can use the xv video output then intel is being used...vesa cannot.

kms is where the kernel is used for mode setting rather than xorg doing it.... it has improved life for intel graphics but has been having mixed results for other cards...nothing to configure but for some hardware it needs disabling via a kernel parameter.

hope that helps

mike

Yes, better to have only one problem or question in each topic post.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Ok gang here we go....for no reason at all when I started puppy today I got the following error:

loading drivers to access disk drives....done
(no keyboard layout)........
searching for puppy files.........
puppy precise 5.7.1.sfs not found dropping to initial ramdisk......
#

I did a frugal re-install and did the /etc/init.d/10alsa mod so I can reboot properly, see:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 354a1c8ec0

re-setup puppy with my wireless and timezone and intel driver.

Reboot: [puppy CREATES non encrypted.3fs save file] and reboots.

Same error.

I reboot from cd and puppy LOADS my nonencrypted.3fs save file and I get the road sign icon/no desktop wallpaper issue...so...

I did the pixbuf thing so I have correct icons on desktop, see:

http://208.109.22.214/puppy/viewtopic.p ... d86632febe

Then I checked menu.lst to confirm all is well there (it is).

Reboot: [puppy SAVES to my non encrypted.3fs save file] reboots and I get:

Same error.

Rebooted from cd and moved the .sfs file from the puppy folder to my puppy precise partition and rebooted...same error.

Reboot from cd delete the .sfs and copied the .sfs from the cd to BOTH the puppy precise folder and to the precise puppy partition, rebooted and same error.

Any ideas? I gotta say this is starting to feel like yet another alpha build being pawned off as ready for prime-time.

Report-video does seem to indicate the correct graphics chip label and does report the intel driver is in use.

So that's a good thing...lol

For your boot problem need this info:

Installed to hard drive?
What partition?
What boot loader used?
Can you post the contents of the bootloader menu.lst?

After you do any changes to the install of Puppy, rerun the bootloader config program, to update the bootloader, to those changes.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Actually, whatever works is the best thing.
My 700m Dell has the same graphics chip as your laptop.
In order to use the 1024x768 resolution that I prefer, it was
necessary to use the i810 driver in older Puppies, and the
vesa driver in the latest.
Video actually worked better using these options than with
the intel driver

Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.

*bigpup* puppy5.2.8 on sda1, puppy5.2.8 on sda2 "recovery", puppy5.7.1 retro on sda3.

Frugal install on all partitions. sda1 controls booting with grub legacy NOT grub4dos.

I was under the impression using the vesa driver is not good for the graphics chip, if this is untrue I'll be happy to use vesa (as long as I can still use youtube/watch movies etc).

I'm going to mark this thread as solved. Thank you for all the help.

I have discovered that the boot issue was in menu.lst.

I had used my menu.lst backup of the first install (psubdir=RetroPup) and the new install needed psubdir=precise5.7.1frugal.

It took 4 reboots to get back to a usuable desktop but it is finally working.

Movies on my SSD are playing fullscreen so I'm guessing that the intel driver is working.

I will add noatime to menu.lst and hope puppy keeps it writes to my SSD in check.
