Which Puppy for dual-boot install with Windows Me?
Which Puppy for dual-boot install with Windows Me?
Hi,
I just reinstalled WIN ME on a computer that I previously upgraded to WIN XP. The HDD is only 6GB and I ran out of space after installing SP3.
I tried installing Puppy 528 when I had WIN XP running but it stalled while loading the ISO file.
Puppy 528 does load on my desktop.
I'd like to install puppy on the laptop as a learning project.
The Laptop is a pavilion N3478 (year 2000) with 192 MB memory. It has one USB 1 port and a 3.5 diskette drive
I have read a number of the posts but need some help in deciding which version of Puppy to install and where to get it from.

dual boot experiment
in some fashion you need to format the HD as a ext 3 or ext 4 and also set aside a portion of it for Linux swap partition of around 256 MB that may get you past the memory hurdles.
I suggest TTuuxx Puppy-214x version. You can get it from here: http://www.smokey01.com/menu/iso.html
This version is designed for older machines such as yours, Should run nicely on it for you.

Thanks to all.
I tried booting with a Toshiba SD-C2402 DVD-ROM.
It is very slow even after reinstalling the WIN ME. I haven't used the computer since 2005. It's hard to believe we could live with that speed.
I'll try loading TTuux Puppy-214x and possibly reformat the HDD as ext3 or ext4.
I don't need the WIN ME. But I'll try loading puppy with it installed at first. I'm not sure whether I will need to have any special HP drivers etc.
I'll post back with the results.

More or less. You have to burn the iso onto the CD in a certain way or it won't boot. What burning program will you use?
Alternatively you can use a program such as ISObuster, which I think works in Windows, to open up the iso file. Then you can put the individual files from the iso file into a flash drive. You'll still have to make it bootable though. Then how will you get that old laptop to boot from USB?

Should have tried Tiny XP with SP3.
TinyXP Rev09 - eXPerience
""""""""""
I put this on a low end laptop for someone with Win NT4,
ahem!.....for testing only of course.
I had no problems with this PB copy.
Some people talk trojans but it is BS.
I had absolutely no problems so don't believe the hype.
If MS had used this bloke they would be selling heaps of copies.
He is a genius.
His Win7 lite >> install.....fits on a cd.
If you were to PM me I might send you the link.
Chris.
